A Round About Way

Yall, it has been quite the week! We woke up this morning, again, to howling wind and rain, and of course tornado warnings. Thankfully it died down by lunch and has just been on and off rain. So as I stated yesterday, slight panic set in when our direct flight out of New Orleans was cancelled. Quickly we called Orbitz and talked to a very nice lady who helped us get a flight out of Pensacola. We were of course thrilled to still be going on Friday, however, driving two hours to the airport then flying to Atlanta then to California was not what I had in mind. We dealt with it and realize we are very blessed to not have a house underwater, but it was still a frustration. All was well until I realized out flight home would still have us landing in New Orleans….with a car over three hours away at the Pensacola airport. Crap.

After some freaking out on my part, and some creative thinking, a plan was born. So, yesterday after the weather died down, we drove two cars, dogs in tow, halfway to my parents house where they met us in one car. They took the dogs along with our other car and drove home. We then went and picked up a rental car that we are driving to Pensacola today and leaving for good. So when we fly home to NOLA, our car will be at my parents house and we can pick up the dogs and go home. WHEW! Got all that? We passed a ton of power trucks on the way to meet the folks, seriously about 50-60, which was awesome to see!

isaac2

Oh, did I mention by the time most of you are reading this we will already be in Pensacola, as we had to leave the house at 4:45 this morning to get to the airport. Oy. Hopefully I will sleep on the planes. Also hopefully I will find a way to get a seat next to my husband. Double Oy. Either way, as I said before, we are so blessed that it wasn’t as bad as originally thought (heading straight for my house at 105 mph). Thank you to everyone who extended prayers and well wishes to us, it really meant a lot! There are still a lot of people facing a hard road so please keep praying for them. The photo below was taken about two miles from my house. Sad smile

So, instead of arriving at 9:15, we will get in about 2:00, and hopefully have time to hit the expo before dinner reservations. Be sure to follow me on Twitter and on my Facebook Fan Page as well as instagram (runningwithsass) so that you can see all the photos I am posting about the half marathon and Disneyland in general.

I will be attempting to update my blog with Disneyland posts while I am away, so stay with me if you want to see what is going on with the race and the west coast!

QOTD: Ever had a flight cancelled? What did you do?

Disney Cruise and Vacation: Part 6

Hi guys! Well, we are still here! It’s still raining here, still very windy. I posted several videos of the storm on my You Tube channel if you want to check them out.  It’s been a tedious few days, and the big news from yesterday is my flight got cancelled for tomorrow, so we are now having to fly out of Pensacola with a  stop in Atlanta. I know this is nothing compared to what other people are facing today with flooded homes, but not going to lie it frustrated me yesterday. In case you have no idea what’s going on down here I suggest you check out weather.com….lots of people have flooded or washed away homes, it’s bad down here. Again. 7 years to the day after Katrina. My family has been very lucky, and we are blessed to have a home with no water in it, and no major wind damage.

I remembered I still haven’t finished recapping my May cruise/trip to Disney, so I thought it would help me pass the time by remembering and posting about the fun time we had this spring! Well, until I got sick, but more on that later.

Where I left off, we were getting off the Disney Magic to start the “land” part of our vacation.

When we got off the boat, we got in our car and didn’t have to be sad, we were heading to WDW, and my parents were joining us there the next day. We drove straight to our resort, the Grand Floridian, to check in. It was early in the morning, and our room wasn’t ready yet. We grabbed some snacks from the lounge and headed back out to Animal Kingdom.

DSC_0812

We headed straight for Expedition Everest so Bobby could jump in the single rider line. He rode it twice very quickly….and then it started to rain, I mean POUR! We ran into the shop, and huddled in with hundreds of others for a good 20-30 minutes until it passed. I had not even thought to bring our ponchos. Whoops. Pretty sure we did the safari ride, walked through and saw some animals on the jungle trek, and did It’s Tough to Be a Bug. Even after eating non stop for 5 days on a cruise, my stomach had the nerve to growl and so we headed to lunch at Flame Tree BBQ. We ate down at a kind of “hidden” deck over the water that has a great view of Expedition Everest.

DSC_0813

DSC_0814

While we were at lunch, we got the text message with our room number in it. I was itching to get back because I KNOW that room number and knew what room we were in, but Bobby wanted to stay longer at Animal Kingdom, so we wandered around a bit more, saw Festival of the Lion King, and then finally decided to head out.

DSC_0815

DSC_0818

Bobby felt bad using a one day ticket for just a few hours (I have an annual pass) but I assured him it was ok. We had several one day base tickets leftover from packages years ago we needed to use anyway. We excitedly went straight to our room and called for our luggage. Just as I suspected, the wonderful staff at the Grand was able to get us the room we honeymooned in five years earlier.

The best part of course, is the view. Can you see the castle to the left in the distance below?

We had panoramic views from the monorail to the castle (including the DVC construction)

DSC_0840

We headed to the lounge for tea and scones, and the best banana bread ever. It’s one of my favorite things they serve in the concierge lounge!

DSC_0845

DSC_0848

We relaxed and ate, my favorite thing to do at the Grand, and then went back to our room and had a surprise from the hotel.

DSC_0850

It was so pretty I almost didn’t want to eat it….but I did anyway, of course. We got cleaned up and dressed for dinner, then went to the lounge to enjoy some appetizers before driving to the Yacht Club for dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse.

DSC_0852

By this point we WERE full, so we decided to split a meal.

DSC_0853

Of course, we had to have a little birthday fun. Bobby was not amused.

We headed back to the hotel to get some sleep before my parents arrived in the morning!

QOTD: Do you like having your birthday celebrated at restaurants, etc. or do you not like the fuss?

Wow! That’s a lot! While this sounds like a great program, it wasn’t ideal for people who were already registered for the race. So, in true runDisney fashion, they have come up with an upgrade program so that even if you have already registered for the race, you can still take part in the Runner’s World challenge:

If you have already booked your race registration for Marathon Weekend, you can still upgrade to the Runner’s WorldChallenge Package.  Simply book your Runner’s World Challenge Package online now and email the runDisney team to request a refund of your current race registration.

Also, you can now upgrade to the package even if you have already booked your Disney hotel:

We are making it even easier for runners to participate in the Runner’s World Challenge during the 20th Anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna. Now, even if you have already booked a hotel, you can still take advantage of a new package that includes all of the extraordinary amenities offered by the Runner’s World Challenge, such as training programs by Runner’s World editors and access to the Race Retreat and Pasta in the Park Party. And if you’ve already registered for the marathon, you can upgrade to the Runner’s World Challenge package.

Sweet! Now anyone can participate easily. If you have any questions about how this works please feel free to e mail me at [email protected]

Sprigs Review and Giveaway

Good morning! Well, scary morning around here. Isaac is supposed to hit tonight/early tomorrow morning, and we are staying put at the house. Please say a prayer for us during this uncertain time, that the storm calms down and doesn’t cause a lot of damage. My parents are staying at their house just north of New Orleans and I am concerned for their safety as well, being so close to the eye. For those unfamiliar with hurricanes, the east side if the “bad side” to be on as far as storm surge, winds, etc. We are of course, on the east side. It just started raining here about 7:30 am. We have food, water, flashlights, and are as ready as you can be. Yesterday morning we still were not sure if we were staying or going, so Bobby and I did what any rational person would do…we went on a ten mile run! Oh my friends, it was a gorgeous run and a beautiful day! Kind of the “calm before the storm” if you will. It was kind of eerie….it was so beautiful, but here I was running, ad knowing that the conditions would deteriorate very, very rapidly—and soon.

Anyway! Speaking of my run, I tried out this new product I was sent from Sprigs. This is the Banjees Wrist Wallet.

banjees2

This is a two sided wallet (check out the reflective strip, safety first!) With a zipper pouch (no worrying about things falling out!) for you to carry small items with you when you run, go to the gym, the beach, etc. I hate carrying things in my hands so this was right up my alley. It was big enough to fit some tissue, and some GU, and didn’t bother me while I ran.

It is made of a light, breathable fabric so it didn’t get heavier/noticeable as I ran and sweated. It was stretchy enough to accommodate the items inside but was still lightweight.

banjees

I highly recommend this product for runners, or anyone who wants to be hands free but doesn’t have pockets. Not to mention, it comes in tons of fun colors and prints!

Sprigs was nice enough to not only supply me with a Banjees Wrist Wallet to give away to a RWS reader, but they also are offering a discount code for you, my awesome readers! Check it out:

RunningWithSass20 valid for 10% off orders up to $29.99 or 20% off orders over $29.99. Valid until 11:59 PM EDT on September 27, 2012.

If you would like to check out Sprigs on Facebook or Twitter and see their other awesome products, be sure to do so with the provided links.

How To Enter:

Leave a separate comment for each:

1.) Tell me which Banjees Wrist Waller color/print you would choose if you won

2.) Tell me how/for what purpose would you use your Banjees Wrist Wallet if you won (running, to the gym, beach, walks,  shopping, hiking, etc.)

3.) Tweet the following! “I want to win a Banjees Wrist Wallet from @sprigsville and @runningwithsass http://runningwithsass.com/sprigs-review-and-giveaway/” (remember my twitter handle is in the tweet so I can see who actually is doing it. :))

Giveaway ends September 5, 2012 at 8:00 CST. I will post a winner on September 6, 2012

Huricane Readiness

Oy what a whirlwind. After tracking tropical storm Isaac all weekend, we still have not decided what we are going to do. We are going to wait until about lunchtime today before we decide.

For those of you who do NOT live in a hurricane zone and have no idea what I am talking about, well, here goes. In case you live in a hole, there is a storm coming into the gulf. It already has done some major damage in Haiti, and it is heading, literally, right for us.

hurricane

Do you see the “H” in the circle right along the coastline in Mississippi? Yeah….that’s where my house is. Oy. (As of Sunday afternoon, this has since shifted SLIGHTLY west). This thing WAS headed into Florida but keeps shifting west. We aren’t sure if there is going to be a mandatory evacuation or not, only time will tell.

So for those of you unfamiliar with the “fun” of this, let me explain a few of the things we are doing to prepare.

1.) Bring in all patio furniture that could be picked up by wind

2.) Pack up all important documents like passports, social security cards, birth certificates, homeowners insurance, etc.

3.) Pack up keepsakes such as photo albums, baby books, etc. Either bring them with you or put them on a high shelf on the first floor of your home.

hurricaneisaac2

4.) Fill up your cars with gas, and containers with gas for cars/generators (we did this yesterday morning because we knew gas stations would be busy today).

5.) Video tape your entire house for insurance purposes. Growing up, I did this for my family, and now it’s time to do it for my own home.

hurricaneIsaac

6.) Pack a survival kit. We have gathered our flashlights, batteries, canned food, bottled water, etc. to take with us, just in case

7.) East out of your refrigerator and freezer. There is a good chance power will be out for an extended period of time, so we have been trying to eat perishable items first (this means ice cream for dessert tonight!) Such as frozen chicken, cheese/eggs/milk in the fridge, etc.

8.) Have a plan. This is a no brainer.

The storm (as of this morning) is set to make landfall on Tuesday night. let the card games, boredom (and a bit of fear!) begin. Please say a prayer for us if you think about it! I will be back tomorrow with more to report, right before He makes landfall.

QOTD: Would you rather ride out a hurricane, tornado, or earthquake?

Weekly Recap: August Week 4

Happy Sunday! Honestly, this week there isn’t a ton to report since I came home on Monday sick after Healthy Living Summit. I did lots of sleeping and nose blowing, and was finally able to run Friday, but that was my first workout since Sunday. Let’s recap, shall we?

20120819_083004

Proof I actually ran in Boston. Did you ever doubt me? Smile

(from Meghann’s blog)

——————————————————

Sunday: 3 mile fun run at Healthy Living Summit

Monday: traveled home, let the sickies begin (obviously, rest day)

Tuesday: rest

Wednesday: rest

Thursday: WANTED to workout but knew if I wanted to run the next day it was a bad idea

Friday: 8 mile run

Saturday: Beast Body Bootcamp and 20 minutes stationary bike

——————————

eh. What can you do? It happens. 11 miles running for the week isn’t awful….well, two weeks before a half marathon it is, but I hadn’t done weights in a week, and I wanted to go into my race strong. Oh well! Rolling with the punches over here. I still have some lingering sniffles, but am hoping to tackle 11 miles tomorrow as my last (and only) double digit run before the half. I can’t believe it’s finally here! Have a great day everyone.

QOTD: Would you rather have a cold for a week or the chicken pox for a week?

RWS Features #37

Good morning friends! I have gotten a few inquires on Twitter and in emails about my foot, and about my cold. Both are doing better. I slept for eleven hours the first two nights I was home and went through two boxes of tissues (my poor nose is so raw!) But I am feeling much better!

As for my foot, it is doing better too! Bobby and I ran eight miles yesterday morning, and just like last time, I had a few twinges going up hills, but other than that it was fine. I did have some serious hip pain and am wondering if it’s my new shoes, so I am going to try running in my OLD shoes Monday (with my inserts to help with support) and see if I have hip issues.

We got an earlier start than we have been, and it was so much nicer and cooler/shadier than it has been in the past. As much as I hate getting up early, we will definitely be starting earlier for now on!

Today I wanted to introduce you to another blogger. Be sure to go visit their site and show some love. Everyone, say hello to Danielle from http://itsaharleyyylife.com/

harleyslife

Look at those adorable dogs! I got a chance to catch up with Danielle at the Healthy Living Summit this year in Boston, she is super sweet!

1.) How/Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging in March of this year. After reading blogs for about a year I decided to finally start my own. It helps me stick to a workout plan and to eat healthy if I am telling people what I am doing. It will also be nice to look back on one day.

2.) Sum up your blog in a couple sentences:

It’s A Harleyyy Life is where I share my day to day activities of trying to live a healthy lifestyle by eating right {for the most part} and working out.

3.)What do you wish to accomplish/achieve by blogging?

I blog for me first. I would love to just keep the mentality I have from blogging and not fall back into the trap of concentrating on my weight. Blogging really has changed my life around. I also blog for my readers. I would love to make close friends and maybe just affect one persons life one day.

4.)What is your biggest healthy living accomplishment?

It may not seem like much but I gained the freshman 25 in college and worked it off. I never want to go back to that weight.

5.) What is your blog URL and twitter handle

http://itsaharleyyylife.com

@itsaharleyylife

Thanks so much Danielle! Everyone be sure to stop by her blog and say hello!

QOTD: Do you have a pet? What kind? name? I love pets and fun pet names!

HLS 2012: Chobani Dinner at Evoo

On the Saturday night of Healthy Living Summit, I was invited along with a few other lovely blogger ladies to attend a special Chobani hosted dinner at a restaurant called Evoo. We took the shuttle to a nearby stop and walked to the restaurant.

They had a private room set up for us with two tables.

DSC_0699

We found our seats and I took a look at what appeared to be an amazing menu!

DSC_0701

Of course we were tweeting the whole time with the #ChobaniEvoo hashtag and sharing photos from the night, which was really fun. We started with a cocktail hour/time and then the food started coming out! (In the order it appears on the menu above)

Even though I don’t eat seafood I did try a bit of it. Smile The lamb and the dessert were my favorite parts, and I could have kept on eating. The chef then came out and talked to us about how they use yogurt as a substitute for certain ingredients in the dishes, it was really interesting!

It’s Time to Break Up

Something new and exciting to announce today, a week or so ago I was asked to be a fitmixer.com brand ambassador! You can check out my bio on their ambassador page and see who else you may know what is an ambassador. Anyway, something that totally drew me to them when I was asked about it was the idea of BALANCE. For them, it’s not just about eating right, or working out, it’s a balance of those things PLUS the mental aspect of it all. Positive thinking, self confidence, and a balanced life are all things I value so I as very excited to jump on board. Fitmixer also holds boot camps if you enjoy doing those, be sure to check it out!

2012-08-09_1352

It doesn’t matter if you are trying to build muscle, lose weight, or just make sure you are getting the proper nutrients, fitmixer has a great product line for everyone. I have been loving the vanilla protein powder (tastes like a milkshake!) and the amino acid supplement. I have been taking the protein before workouts and the amino afterwards.

558504_436134249756041_831230048_n

Another great thing about me being an ambassador? I will get to hold giveaways for YOU! That’s right, so stay tuned for the fun. I will be hosting giveaways here on my site and also linking you up to ones being hosted by Fitmixer.

Every month, I will be writing a Fitmixer blog post on a particular topic given to me by the company. This month’s topic is…dun dun dun…the break up letter. As they say, breaking up is hard to do. However, sometimes it just needs to be done, and I have some things/attitudes I need to break up with myself. So I decided to write my break up letter to doubt.

Dear doubt,

It’s time for you to go. I am tired of you whispering in my ear every time I get injured that I will never be able to run again, that I will never reach my goals, and that I will be unhappy. I am tired of the anxiety that comes along with being unsure about the future. I am typically a positive person, but for some reason when it comes to fitness, running, and my blog goals, it all goes out the window.

I know you want me to never realize my dreams or goals, and you want me to keep telling myself that I am not good enough, strong enough, or fast enough to matter. You do NOT want me to remember that everyone is on a different road, that everyone’s journey will not look the same. You do NOT want me to remember that I have friends and family that love me and are rooting for me.

Instead, you want me to give up. Quit. Stay down when the going gets tough. Oh, doubt, it would be so easy to do so, and honestly, in the past year, there have been times when I wanted to give in to you. Getting a stress fracture in my foot, getting morton’s neuroma in the same foot, dealing with other stresses of life, and having writers/bloggers block. You would have loved that wouldn’t you? But I refuse to let you win, you will not defeat me. So doubt, hit the road, I can and will do this!

HLS 2012: Day Three/Sessions

Saturday morning I decided to “sleep in” till 6:00 since the planning team had to be down in the lobby at 7:00 to get ready for the day. A lot of people didn’t make it to registration the night before so we had the tables set up again, plus the sponsors set up and and of course breakfast to get everyone ready for the day.

Mary and I ready for a long day

It was quite the interesting morning, because ransom hotel guests kept coming over and asking us questions. At one point, an older couple came over to me and asked if we were giving away “free sneakers” I told them no, and went on to explain why we were there, and that attendees had paid for a ticket and that nothing was free. The old man then goes “oooh, free pens!” and took one of our pens and put it in his pocket. Then he did the same with a bottle of water. I really, really, didn’t know what to say. It was so random. So, we ended up having random people we had to keep shoo-ing out of the area where our sponsors were, because they were going in and taking all the free samples! I had to laugh when I saw this sweet old lady in a wheelchair trying to take things from sponsors.

photo (37)

We got everyone registered and into breakfast, and the day got started. It flew by as I was running around moving items, introduced a speaker, had to get ready for my session, etc. I barely ate lunch, and didn’t have time to talk to all the sponsors (who were amazing by the way!)

photo (34)

(speaking of sponsors, how cute are these Five Bamboo pants?)

Lunch was served where we had the cocktail party the night before. It was delicious. The Hyatt in Cambridge did a fantastic job with all the food.

After lunch I ran back to my room to go over my speech one last time before my session on Social Media trends. Before I knew it, it was finally time for my presentation! If you would like to check out some things tweeted during my session be sure to check out #HLSmedia. I am still trying to decide if I am going to share my presentation on my blog and what that would entail. Stay tuned! I did however want to post the Google Plus links I promised some of you on Twitter:

My session was also live blogged by Kelly and you can check it out on her blog!

After my session, we all headed back into the main room for final thoughts/wrap up. The day was such a whirlwind, I cannot believe it was over so quickly! I enjoyed it so much though. Meghann, Heather and Julie did an awesome job putting the conference on!
