Weatherman, WHAT?

So I have determined I am in the wrong field. I need to becme a meterologist. I think it’s the only career in which you can be wrong on a regular basis and still keep your job! Today the weather said: rainy in the morning, clearing out by afternoon, high 63.
What the ACTUAL weather was: rainy and gross mist all day, flat out cold, gloomy and overcast, never getting above 46. SERIOUSLY? seriously. So my plan to run outside in this supposed to be beautiful weather…UG! I didn’t bring gym clothes either, so no running today. I did come home and do 15 minutes elliptical, 10 minutes of the Biggest Loser DVD, and some other arm weights. I WILL bring gym clothes tomorrow and I WILL run! BAH!
Ok rant over sorry for that! moving on…Yesterday i made pancakes from scratch! I make them with wheat flour, and chocolate chips. Here is what i did:
2 cups self-rising or all-purpose wheat flour (don’t need baking powder if self rising)
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups of milk
1/2 tablespoon baking powder
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup dark chocolate chips (optional)
Syrup

**of course different kinds of butter/milk etc. can be substituted**
– Crack eggs into a bowl and beat until fluffy. Add in the dry ingredients, (omit baking powder if using self-rising flour), and milk. Do not stir mixture at this point.
– Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl (like those recommended on SmallMicrowave.co.uk). Make sure that it’s completely melted
-Add the butter to the mix. Stir gently, leaving some small clumps of dry ingredients in the batter. Do not blend until completely smooth. If your batter is smooth, your pancakes will be tough and flat as opposed to fluffy.
-add chocolate chips, beware, they sink to bottom so I had to kind of dig them out of the bottom of the bowl!
-Pour about 3 tablespoons to 1/4 cup batter from the tip of a large spoon or from a pitcher onto the hot griddle(Or your greased frying pan). The amount you pour will decide the final size of your pancakes. It is best to begin with less batter, and then slowly pour more batter onto the pan to increase the pancake size
-Cook for about two minutes or until the pancake is golden. You should see bubbles form and then pop around the edges. When the bubbles at the edge of the batter pop and a hole is left that does not immediately close up, flip the cake gently
-Cook the other side until golden and remove. Want a deeper color? Repeat the steps for another thirty seconds per side until the pancake is done enough for your tastes (color is darker than regular pancakes with white flour)

Here is how they came out, the dark spots are some of the chocolate chips:

Question of the day: What is your favorite pancake topping or mix in?

Target Pants Review

So I bought some of the target running pants, and I thought I would take the time to give a little review on the product. First, when i heard the C9 brand was coming out with extended sizes I was stoked! regular pants are too short, and forget putting the in the dryer! The “long” size said on the tag: “for women 5’9″ and taller.” Well, I am 5’9″ so I thought they would fit perfect, and even if they were a SMIDGE too long, I could put them in the dryer.

Well, I bought said pants, and they are SO LONG! Like, almost cover my entire foot wrapped underneath my heel! Seriously? I am 5’9″ and these are ridiculously long! You would have to be about 6’2″ to fit in these! I would think more women are 5’9″ or 5’10” and not 6’2″!!! I was a little bummed about it, but I stuck them in the dryer this morning so hopefully they will shorten up.

They are SUPER comfy, and fit is good other than the length. I got the mediums and felt great in them on my run yesterday (other than the fact that I had to ROLL UP THE BOTTOMS!) I guess that’s how short people feel when wearing regular pants?

Anyway, HERE is the link to the pants. Maybe if you are not abnormally tall/short the regular length will be perfect for you! These pants have some great potential at a great price!

On another note, went to wal mart today and got some spinach, at some point I will be trying a green monster! I am nervous!!
May do some strength training today, we will see!

Much Better!

Happy Saturday! It has been a good day. I slept 9 hours, then finished cleaning the closet. It looks sssoo much better. I got rid of some things and packed away some things. I had it all done before Bobby woke up!
Here are some pictures. I put one of the before pics first, just in case you forgot!

and Bobby’s side just because

So I was feeling accomplished! I made smoothies for breakfast and had a banana muffin

Them Bobby decided it was time to shave the dogs (finally!) They were looking pretty shaggy. Bella wouldn’t come, so he did Sassy first. Bella realized it was inevitable, and resigned herself to the fact that she was next.

We just did Sassy, then decided to run and then do Bella after. So we set out for our six miles. It was a beautiful day, low 60’s, I had one pants and a tank top on. Only reason I wore pants was because I just bought them and wanted to try them out. Well, I regretted it a mile in. It was hot!

we ran down our road and across the street to the trails we have been going on, but we went further than usual. There is a low spot on the trail and it has always been covered in water so it forced us to turn around. This is the first time we could cross, yay!

it was an ok run. I averaged about 10 seconds slower than I want to run the half marathon in next weekend, so I was pleased with that.
We came in, shaved poor Bella, and now we have tiny puppies again and not fluffy ones!
Planning to relax, go eat tonight and grocery shop!

Overwhelmed!

Ok so today has NOT been a good mental health day for me! We took the 5th grade on a field trip….as a teacher, field trips are very, very, stressful. I had the worst headache by the time we got back. So, I didn’t end up running and put it off till tomorrow. I took a nap when I came home and that helped.
So then I decided to try and tackle my closet. I. got. so. overwhelmed. I did a little but then I had to leave. I started looking around at how much I needed to do nd how I don’t have enough space to put everything, and I had to leave the room! Pathetic! I did take befre shots, so maybe once you see how BAD it is you will understand. I am so embarassed to post these!

AWFUL I know! How did I let it get like that! I may do some more later, but will probably wait till tomorrow. Also I have a 6 mile run planned tomorrow. Next week my plan is to do 2-3 easy runs before the race. It’s so close! I can’t wait!

****Giveaway!****
Shut Up and Run Is doing another giveaway. This time, for something called Yurbuds. They are headphones that are supposed to fit snuggly in your ears and not move. go check it out!

Mental Health

Part of my healthier you plan deals with mental health. Today I did something to help that. I am very type A, like to be organized and have everything in it’s place. When things are not organized I get stressed out. When everything is clean I feel so much more relaxed and at peace. So I am tackling one room at a time.
Today was the laundry room. I have always wanted a mud room, somewhere to put my running stuff, sit down, take off my shoes, hang my purse. We just don’t have room for this in our hallways, but then it hit me, if I cleaned up the laundry rom which is right next to the garage door where we come in, I could make a mud room. So that’s what I did! I went to target and got a shelf with hooks and hung it on the wall. Then I used a bench that sits in my bathroom, unused, and put it under the shelf. Then I added a pillow and there ya go!
My laundry room is small so getting an angle on the room was hard! This is from above.

some of my running stuff hung up and on the shelf

from the door. I put the hamper in that cabinet on the left to keep dirty clothes out of sight. You should have seen this room before. I forgot to take before photos because I was so excited to start!

the detergent is there because it is too big to fit in the cabinet!

Whew I feel better already. I used to always keep that door closed because I would throw clothes in there, but now I want to keep it open, and it makes the house look bigger with the door open. 🙂

Next thing I did today to be healthy is make chicken parmesan. I thought I had chicken which I was going to bake…no such chicken. Luckily, I had frozen patties..not the healthiest but at least I had something to eat! So NORMALLY I would take
-baked chicken
-tomato sauce
-wheat pasta (I mixed half wheat half white because I am getting used to the taste)
-mozzarella cheese

**cook pasta, put in bowl, top with hcicken, sauce, and cheese. So fast and easy. I used healthy tomato sauce from fresh market, so I felt pretty good about it!

it was very good, I will do this again for sure, and hopefully with all whole wheat pasta!

no run today because my run to target and my laundry room re-vamp, so I am doing arms and abs. Doing strength training more is another step to a healthy me. I am on a roll today!

Willpower?

In light of the fact that today is Ash Wednesday, I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about willpower, or, my lack of it. I am very stubborn, and like to think I can do anything I set my mind to. My problem is, I get in the way of me. If I had willpower, I would run a faster 5k. If I had willpower, I wouldn’t eat sweets everyday, and so on and so forth. My point is, being healthy takes effort. You don’t just wake up in the morning toned and energetic and at your ideal weight, with healthy organs, skin, etc. It takes work!
Now, I am not Catholic, but I have over the years attempted to give up different things, and guess what, it has been an EPIC FAIL every time. SO, I decided this year, to just not set myself up for failure and disappointment. Instead, I have decided to set a lent “goal” for myself. My goal is to be more healthy. That’s it. whatever that looks like. I want to look back on these 40 days at Easter, and it be obvious I am eating, thinking, and living more healthy. To give you an idea of what I mean, here are a few things I came up with I want to do: 1.)wear sunscreen everyday, not just on my face (which I already do) 2.)strength train twice a week 3.)try and get in more calories at breakfast so I am not starving later in the day 4.)try new meals that include veggies 5.)run every so often without my garmin, just for fun, for the sake of running. no distance or pace requirements, just run! 6.)Wake up a few minutes earlier in the mornings to mentally prepare myself for the day, calmly, instead of just getting up, rushing out the door, and eating in the car.

Do those things make sense? I covered skin, working out, food, mental health, etc. Just overall, a healthy me. I am going to try and keep track of the specific things I do so I can recap them all at Easter!

this is serious willpower!

Today I did some speedwork at the gym, I did 2 miles at a fast pace for me. Several times I wanted to stop or slow down, but with this new willpower thing…I made myself keep going and am proud! 🙂

Happy Mardi Gras and a review

Yes yes I am aware that 99% of you could care less today is Mardi Gras, and that 85% of you didn’t realize it was Mardi Gras. When you are from the area though, it’s just one of those things that is a part of you. I miss it sometimes, and am sad I didn’t get to go to any parades. Anyone up for a road trip next year? I can play tour guide!!!
Ok I am getting off topic. The Mardi Gras 1/2 marathon is in less than 2 weeks. I know I have talked about not feeling ready, which I don’t, but I am so excited about the whole weekend anyway! Hanging out with friends, eating good food, what can be better? I got my e-mail to print out my waiver, and Bobby and I are in corral 13. I don’t know how many there are but I think it goes into the 20’s? But they are going to let each corral go at 1-2 minute starts and not TEN like in Disney. BOO!
We also got all of our final info about the expo, bands, etc. Being the type A person i am, I printed it all out, busted out a highlighter and went to town! Let the countdown begin! Tomorrow my goal is to do some speedwork, we shall see! Today i did 20 minutes elliptical and am doing some more strength training.

Ok so as promised here is my review of my runningskirts.com long sleeve shirt. They actually have (had) two kinda…one is softer on the inside (polyester) and it’s the one I have, the other one is the one made of lycra, the one I have was $58.00, the lycra one is $48.00. I know I know, expensive but SO worth it. I have worn this baby every time I long run in the cold and it’s SO WARM and has the nifty thumb holes to keep your hands warm. sizing is a bit odd, I am not a big person but I got a large. You want it to be snug, and the sleeves are TIGHT but that’s how it is supposed to be. I wanted the large for more length in the torso (I am 5’9″).
This shirt wicks sweat away from your body and really helps with the wind, even when running in super cold temps I actually get a bit too warm in it sometimes! You don’t have to wear a bunch of layers with this baby. I highly recommend it. I bought mine at the Disney expo. On th website I don’t see the one I got, but I am sure if you e mail them you can get more info. Here is the page: running skirts tops
Ok here are my pics. ignore the brown clip attached to the bottom of my shirt. i wear clips on my shirt all the time!

Experimental Cooking

Today I was off from work for President’s Day, so I decided to try my hand at a couple of new recipes. First, I went to the store to get ingredients for pumpkin spice muffins, and what do you know, there is a PUMPKIN shortage, and so there have been no pumpkins since Christmas! I was so bummed out, but decided to make some banana muffins courtesy of my friend Jen’s recipe. They came out looking good, but they didn’t have a ton of taste. I did not make them right..apparently I was supposed to use really ripe bananas, like, brown, sitting out for a week. They have the most flavor. Well, mine had a couple brown spots but that’s about it. I can definitely see them tasting good if I did them right, not that they are bad, just a bit bland, but I am going to eat the rest with peanut butter! So here ya go:

Preheat oven 400F. Spray 18 muffin pans with nonstick spray.

Ingredients
1 ½ c. wheat flour
¾ c. quick cooking oats
½ c. plus 1 T. brown sugar
1/3 c. ground flaxseed
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
¾ tsp. ground cinnamon
¼ tsp. salt
3 small over ripe bananas chopped
¾ c. skim milk
3 egg whites
3 T. canola oil
¼ c. granola

Preparation
Stir flour through salt. Make a well in the center of mix.
In a separate bowl, combine banana through oil and mix until smooth.
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients until just wet.
Scoop mix into muffin pans.
Sprinkle each muffin w/ granola.
Bake for 17- 19 minutes on 400®F. Cool in pan for 5-10 minutes. Finish
cooling on wire rack.

here are a couple pics I took:

ya live you learn, next time I will do them right!

Ok so my next experiment was taco soup. Most of you know I don’t like a lot of veggies, and try and find ways to slip them in that I can’t really taste. A girl made this for Bible study last week and it was really good so I decided to try my hand at it! I learned on this one too. I used Original rotel and it was a little too spicy for me, (I don’t like spicy though) so next time I will use mild rotel. Also, I did not do the stewed tomatoes.

Dump the following in a pot and heat on Medium on stovetop:

1 lb of cooked ground beef
1 can whole kernel corn
1 can Ranch style black beans
1 can rotel tomatoes-original
1 can stewed tomatoes (optional)
1 packet of taco seasoning mix
1 packet of ranch seasoning mix

Toppings: Cheese, Chips, Sour Cream

I usually double the recipe to last a few meals.

The last thing I made was chocolate covered strawberries, and I did the SAME THING i ALWAYS do, I cooked the chocolate too long, burnt it, and it got chunky. ug! So don’t make fun of how non-smooth they are. By the way, it’s Jen’s fault I made these! Her husband made her some and I wanted some!

So basically I learned a lesson with each thing I cooked today. I guess that’s how life is! We experiment and learn so we can do it better/right next time!

Today was strength training, I did abs and arms, may go to the gym for cross training tomorrow, we will see! Hope everyone had a good day!

A no fun Valentine’s Day run

So we did our long run today, 10 miles. From the title you can guess that this wasn’t a good thing. I knew it wouldn’t be “great” because I am a morning runner, and we didn’t get to run till 1:45 in the afternoon, the WORST part of the day for me, the slump. boo! It was about 52 degrees, not too bad, but windy. yuck.

Here I am getting ready to go!

The first 6 miles were good, I held the pace I want to hold for the race, and I was happy with that. Then we hit mile 7, and my hip started hurting and Bobby’s hamstring started hurting. We are a pathetic little couple. We pushed through mile 7 and part of 8 and really started hurting and basically walked most of mile 10. I know I know, slackers! But we hurt ssoo bad! At least we finished and we are feeling accomplished, but not really “ready” for the race. Oh well, we can only do so much. Hopefully it will all be ok once adrenaline kicks in.
here are a couple pics from our run on part of the trail.
This is in front of the neighborhood

Bobby looking all cute

Oh yes, wanted to mention. I am part of a fun message board called Running of the Ears, for people who love running and Disney. Well the girls on there love running skirts, so we had a mouse”skirt”teers shirt made, they are super cute!
the back says “it all started with a skirt” and the front says “The Mouseskirteers”

No work for me tomorrow, thank you Presidents Day! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Snow Pictures

Ok so nothing too exciting to report today. I guess I got a “workut” yesterday pushing the two giant snowballs up the hill that we made because I am SO SORE! Madness! Tomorrow we are going to atempt 10 miles, depending on the weather. Should be exciting!

Here are some snow pictures I took with my “real” camera.
these are from when I first got up, the snow came down for about 6 hours after this!

Sassy was NOT amused

Bella on the other hand LOVED it.

Bella was SO funny. She bounced, BOUNCED through the snow, and would shove her head into it, it was hilarious!

hehehe

So we decided to build a GIANT snowman, to make up for all the times we didn’t get to build one!

but just building one wasn’t enough for Bobby…so we rolled a second huge snowball up the hill. He literally had to get under it with his shoulder while I pushed from the top. It was SO heavy!

here is me and Bella with the finished Snowzilla!

True Love haha

House with the two giant snowmen

poor snowman this morning. Look at his arm sticking up out of the ground haha!

So that was our fun snowday! We had a blast, but we have had enough of it!
Hopefully it will warm up for our run tomorrow!
