Dove Conditioner Review and Sweepstakes

In case you haven’t noticed, I have very long and thick hair. I am actually considering cutting it because it is getting so bad it breaks all of my ponytail holders! Not to mention, as a runner who is out in the sun and the very hot and humid temperatures of the south all the time, I struggle with frizzy rough looking hair.

Did you know that roughness and frizz are early signs of hair damage? Eeek! I didn’t know this until recently, and I also didn’t know it can be hereditary as well. (Thanks mom and dad! I kid.)

So when I was given the change to try Dove’s intensive repair conditioner, I jumped at the chance.

dove

When I opened the bottle I immediately loved the smell. Some products are too chemically and overpowering to me but this one was great. It also lathers really really well and rinsed out very smoothly. It truly did make my hair feel very soft an smooth after, and it took about two weeks but I noticed my hair was all around more smooth (less frizzy) and easier to manage. I hope I am doing it a favor by helping to keep it healthy in the summer heat!

Would you like a chance to win a $1000 spa finder gift card? All you have to do is follow the link below and answer the question:

What is your favorite thing about your hair?

We are way to hard on ourselves and need to celebrate the things we love about ourselves and not constantly be tearing down our own bodies. My favorite thing about my hair is how the color changes with the seasons. In the winter it’s a dark brown and in the summer pieces of it are almost blonde. I think that’s fun. Smile

Sprigs Review and Giveaway

Good morning! Well, scary morning around here. Isaac is supposed to hit tonight/early tomorrow morning, and we are staying put at the house. Please say a prayer for us during this uncertain time, that the storm calms down and doesn’t cause a lot of damage. My parents are staying at their house just north of New Orleans and I am concerned for their safety as well, being so close to the eye. For those unfamiliar with hurricanes, the east side if the “bad side” to be on as far as storm surge, winds, etc. We are of course, on the east side. It just started raining here about 7:30 am. We have food, water, flashlights, and are as ready as you can be. Yesterday morning we still were not sure if we were staying or going, so Bobby and I did what any rational person would do…we went on a ten mile run! Oh my friends, it was a gorgeous run and a beautiful day! Kind of the “calm before the storm” if you will. It was kind of eerie….it was so beautiful, but here I was running, ad knowing that the conditions would deteriorate very, very rapidly—and soon.

Anyway! Speaking of my run, I tried out this new product I was sent from Sprigs. This is the Banjees Wrist Wallet.

banjees2

This is a two sided wallet (check out the reflective strip, safety first!) With a zipper pouch (no worrying about things falling out!) for you to carry small items with you when you run, go to the gym, the beach, etc. I hate carrying things in my hands so this was right up my alley. It was big enough to fit some tissue, and some GU, and didn’t bother me while I ran.

It is made of a light, breathable fabric so it didn’t get heavier/noticeable as I ran and sweated. It was stretchy enough to accommodate the items inside but was still lightweight.

banjees

I highly recommend this product for runners, or anyone who wants to be hands free but doesn’t have pockets. Not to mention, it comes in tons of fun colors and prints!

Sprigs was nice enough to not only supply me with a Banjees Wrist Wallet to give away to a RWS reader, but they also are offering a discount code for you, my awesome readers! Check it out:

RunningWithSass20 valid for 10% off orders up to $29.99 or 20% off orders over $29.99. Valid until 11:59 PM EDT on September 27, 2012.

If you would like to check out Sprigs on Facebook or Twitter and see their other awesome products, be sure to do so with the provided links.

How To Enter:

Leave a separate comment for each:

1.) Tell me which Banjees Wrist Waller color/print you would choose if you won

2.) Tell me how/for what purpose would you use your Banjees Wrist Wallet if you won (running, to the gym, beach, walks,  shopping, hiking, etc.)

3.) Tweet the following! “I want to win a Banjees Wrist Wallet from @sprigsville and @runningwithsass http://runningwithsass.com/sprigs-review-and-giveaway/” (remember my twitter handle is in the tweet so I can see who actually is doing it. :))

Giveaway ends September 5, 2012 at 8:00 CST. I will post a winner on September 6, 2012

Huricane Readiness

Oy what a whirlwind. After tracking tropical storm Isaac all weekend, we still have not decided what we are going to do. We are going to wait until about lunchtime today before we decide.

For those of you who do NOT live in a hurricane zone and have no idea what I am talking about, well, here goes. In case you live in a hole, there is a storm coming into the gulf. It already has done some major damage in Haiti, and it is heading, literally, right for us.

hurricane

Do you see the “H” in the circle right along the coastline in Mississippi? Yeah….that’s where my house is. Oy. (As of Sunday afternoon, this has since shifted SLIGHTLY west). This thing WAS headed into Florida but keeps shifting west. We aren’t sure if there is going to be a mandatory evacuation or not, only time will tell.

So for those of you unfamiliar with the “fun” of this, let me explain a few of the things we are doing to prepare.

1.) Bring in all patio furniture that could be picked up by wind

2.) Pack up all important documents like passports, social security cards, birth certificates, homeowners insurance, etc.

3.) Pack up keepsakes such as photo albums, baby books, etc. Either bring them with you or put them on a high shelf on the first floor of your home.

hurricaneisaac2

4.) Fill up your cars with gas, and containers with gas for cars/generators (we did this yesterday morning because we knew gas stations would be busy today).

5.) Video tape your entire house for insurance purposes. Growing up, I did this for my family, and now it’s time to do it for my own home.

hurricaneIsaac

6.) Pack a survival kit. We have gathered our flashlights, batteries, canned food, bottled water, etc. to take with us, just in case

7.) East out of your refrigerator and freezer. There is a good chance power will be out for an extended period of time, so we have been trying to eat perishable items first (this means ice cream for dessert tonight!) Such as frozen chicken, cheese/eggs/milk in the fridge, etc.

8.) Have a plan. This is a no brainer.

The storm (as of this morning) is set to make landfall on Tuesday night. let the card games, boredom (and a bit of fear!) begin. Please say a prayer for us if you think about it! I will be back tomorrow with more to report, right before He makes landfall.

QOTD: Would you rather ride out a hurricane, tornado, or earthquake?

It’s Time to Break Up

Something new and exciting to announce today, a week or so ago I was asked to be a fitmixer.com brand ambassador! You can check out my bio on their ambassador page and see who else you may know what is an ambassador. Anyway, something that totally drew me to them when I was asked about it was the idea of BALANCE. For them, it’s not just about eating right, or working out, it’s a balance of those things PLUS the mental aspect of it all. Positive thinking, self confidence, and a balanced life are all things I value so I as very excited to jump on board. Fitmixer also holds boot camps if you enjoy doing those, be sure to check it out!

2012-08-09_1352

It doesn’t matter if you are trying to build muscle, lose weight, or just make sure you are getting the proper nutrients, fitmixer has a great product line for everyone. I have been loving the vanilla protein powder (tastes like a milkshake!) and the amino acid supplement. I have been taking the protein before workouts and the amino afterwards.

558504_436134249756041_831230048_n

Another great thing about me being an ambassador? I will get to hold giveaways for YOU! That’s right, so stay tuned for the fun. I will be hosting giveaways here on my site and also linking you up to ones being hosted by Fitmixer.

Every month, I will be writing a Fitmixer blog post on a particular topic given to me by the company. This month’s topic is…dun dun dun…the break up letter. As they say, breaking up is hard to do. However, sometimes it just needs to be done, and I have some things/attitudes I need to break up with myself. So I decided to write my break up letter to doubt.

Dear doubt,

It’s time for you to go. I am tired of you whispering in my ear every time I get injured that I will never be able to run again, that I will never reach my goals, and that I will be unhappy. I am tired of the anxiety that comes along with being unsure about the future. I am typically a positive person, but for some reason when it comes to fitness, running, and my blog goals, it all goes out the window.

I know you want me to never realize my dreams or goals, and you want me to keep telling myself that I am not good enough, strong enough, or fast enough to matter. You do NOT want me to remember that everyone is on a different road, that everyone’s journey will not look the same. You do NOT want me to remember that I have friends and family that love me and are rooting for me.

Instead, you want me to give up. Quit. Stay down when the going gets tough. Oh, doubt, it would be so easy to do so, and honestly, in the past year, there have been times when I wanted to give in to you. Getting a stress fracture in my foot, getting morton’s neuroma in the same foot, dealing with other stresses of life, and having writers/bloggers block. You would have loved that wouldn’t you? But I refuse to let you win, you will not defeat me. So doubt, hit the road, I can and will do this!

HLS 2012: Day Three/Sessions

Saturday morning I decided to “sleep in” till 6:00 since the planning team had to be down in the lobby at 7:00 to get ready for the day. A lot of people didn’t make it to registration the night before so we had the tables set up again, plus the sponsors set up and and of course breakfast to get everyone ready for the day.

Mary and I ready for a long day

It was quite the interesting morning, because ransom hotel guests kept coming over and asking us questions. At one point, an older couple came over to me and asked if we were giving away “free sneakers” I told them no, and went on to explain why we were there, and that attendees had paid for a ticket and that nothing was free. The old man then goes “oooh, free pens!” and took one of our pens and put it in his pocket. Then he did the same with a bottle of water. I really, really, didn’t know what to say. It was so random. So, we ended up having random people we had to keep shoo-ing out of the area where our sponsors were, because they were going in and taking all the free samples! I had to laugh when I saw this sweet old lady in a wheelchair trying to take things from sponsors.

photo (37)

We got everyone registered and into breakfast, and the day got started. It flew by as I was running around moving items, introduced a speaker, had to get ready for my session, etc. I barely ate lunch, and didn’t have time to talk to all the sponsors (who were amazing by the way!)

photo (34)

(speaking of sponsors, how cute are these Five Bamboo pants?)

Lunch was served where we had the cocktail party the night before. It was delicious. The Hyatt in Cambridge did a fantastic job with all the food.

After lunch I ran back to my room to go over my speech one last time before my session on Social Media trends. Before I knew it, it was finally time for my presentation! If you would like to check out some things tweeted during my session be sure to check out #HLSmedia. I am still trying to decide if I am going to share my presentation on my blog and what that would entail. Stay tuned! My session was also live blogged by Kelly and you can check it out on her blog!

After my session, we all headed back into the main room for final thoughts/wrap up. The day was such a whirlwind, I cannot believe it was over so quickly! I enjoyed it so much though. Meghann, Heather and Julie did an awesome job putting the conference on!

QOTD: So who wants to attend HLS13 after reading these recaps?!?

Learn From Experience

I truly believe that we are supposed to learn from every experience in life, the good and the bad, the fun and the agonizing. I also believe in not “wasting” an experience. What I mean, is when something happens, good or bad but I tend to learn more in the bad, and we don’t learn anything from it, it’s almost like that experience was a waste.

DSC_0424

One of my favorite quotes is “Pain is God’s megaphone.” I firmly believe God has really been trying to get my attention lately. For what? I am not sure yet. last time I injured my foot, after some sulking and pouting, I chose to learn from the experience. If I had not been injured, I most likely would not have started and grown to love weight lifting, which was a huge positive in my Life. So….injury bad, but learning something far greater = good.

So, here I am again, no running, same foot pain again, and not gong to lie, frustrated as heck. I have been doing a lot of praying, and having a lot of “what am I supposed to learn from this?” conversations with myself. My mood tends to change by the day. Some days, I am very optimistic, know I will get better, and will run again. But there are some days, like yesterday, where I let it get the best of me. I was very frustrated, upset, and had a lot of “why is this happening to me…again!” thoughts.

It’s been a week that I have been back in my boot or constantly wearing stiff soled running shoes, and I am getting antsy. I just want to run, go back to the way things were, cross another day off my training plan. I know I stand to gain some knowledge, some experience or life lesson from this, but I am at a loss as to what it is for now. I know sometimes we may not see the why until way down the road, or ever but I keep hoping and praying it is for good reason, and that my experiences will be used to maybe help other people someday in some capacity. Until I figure it out, I am going to keep on keeping on, learning, growing, and looking for life lessons and experiences through my injury.

Weekly Update: July week 3 and a new Ambassador

Happy Sunday! This weeks workouts have been different from usual considering I haven’t been running. I did however manage to get in a few good workouts, and I also have something exciting news to share with you all. But first, the workouts:

Sunday: rest

Monday: 2 mile run, chest, triceps, abs

Tuesday: 20 minutes stationary bike, back, biceps, abs

Wednesday: 1.5 mile run (after this run I decided to not run for 2 weeks)

Thursday: chest, triceps, abs

Friday: back, biceps, abs, legs; 15 minutes stationary bike

Saturday: rest

———————–

I did well on the weights front, 4 x’s last week, with 2 runs and 2 times cross training. This coming week will be all cross training and weights of course, and then I will try running again middle of the next week. Fingers crossed!

Ok, so moving on to the exciting news I spoke of earlier. I was contacted a couple of weeks ago by Verizon Wireless about being an ambassador for them. Of course, I was stoked and said yes. After much anticipation (and with Fedex royally messing up the shipment! They even admitted I didn’t get my box because the driver was LAZY!) I got my new phone, the Samsung Galaxy SIII. You may remember a little over a year ago I actually had the galaxy vibrant by Samsung, and recently traded it in for an iPhone due to some issues I was having mainly with the service through Cellular South. All of that to say I was very curious to see how the Galaxy SIII measured up to the original Galaxy.

d2aab5a6d2c011e1974722000a1e8c8b_7

The biggest “wow” I saw right off the bat was how big the screen was. My original Galaxy had a screen bigger than my iPhone but this one is HUGE!

fc98eab0d2c311e18d8622000a1e8ba3_7

Galaxy SIII on the left, iPhone 4S on the right. I immediately charged it up and started playing with it. The 4G LTE is super fast! Everything moves really smoothly with no freezes, pauses, or breaks so far. I have a few other favorites that I have discovered but I will save them for another post. I will be tweeting, texting, calling, instagramming, and web surfing from this bad boy for the next three months so hang on! If you want to check out the Twitter stream with all the chatter, check out #VZWA for all the fun!

QOTD: What kind of cell phone do you have? Do you like it?

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Wireless Ambassador program and have been provided with a wireless device and three months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.

RWS Features #32

Good morning and happy weekend! A HUGE HUGE thank you for all of my birthday wishes! Between the blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, my fan pages, texts, and phone calls I was overwhelmed with the love from my family, friends, and readers. You guys sure know how to make a girl feel special. You are all amazing! The fun is continuing for us this weekend, so while I unplug a bit and enjoy my family, I wanted to share another blog with you!

I am sure you already know who she is, and she needs no introduction, but here she is! Amazing mother of 4, veteran YouTube-er, and all around awesome girl!

rborucki_1

Bex from Bex Life (and baby Summer!)

1.) How/Why did you start blogging?

I’ve been blogging since I became a mom at 19-years-old. I was looking for a community that I could connect with. The internet was brand new and there was no such word as “blog”… the good old days!

2.) Sum up your blog in a couple sentences

BexLife.com is all about family, fitness, and urban farming. In a lot of ways I’m just a ordinary Jersey girl who likes the mall and the beach, but I’ve made sustainable living and the politics of health my life.

3.)What do you wish to accomplish/achieve by blogging?

I’m primarily a YouTuber, so my blog is more about revealing more of my personal views and an intimate look at my family life. BexLife.com is a community of devoted fans and respected health & fitness experts, all supporting each other. I hope that the community only grows larger and more dynamic with time.

4.)What is your biggest healthy living accomplishment?

My proudest and most triumphant physical accomplishment was delivering my fourth baby at home 16 months ago. I practiced and taught yoga up until two weeks before her birth to prepare for labor, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve never done something so difficult and rewarding in my life.

Thanks so much for sharing a bit about yourself Bex! To learn more about this awesome lady, be sure to check out her blog, find her on Twitter, and subscribe to her amazing YouTube channel. You will be glad you did!

QOTD: Do you vlog? Why or why not? Do you watch vlogs/You Tube channels? Why or why not?

July Goals 2012

Happy 4th of July eve! There is excitement in this house since we get the day off tomorrow! A day off in the middle of the week is always interesting. While I would rather it be tacked onto a weekend, it’s better than nothing, amen?

So I am a couple days late, but I wanted to talk to you about my July goals, and how I did with my June goals. (Some good, some…major fail.) So let’s start with June then I will share July’s goals.

Drink more water (A-):  I did pretty good at this in June, however, I feel this is an area in which there is always need for improvement. I try to chug a glass first thing in the morning and then keep refilling during the day, and especially during and after workouts! of course, I am sure a few snow balls will be thrown in there somewhere!

2011-04-25121102

Keep up with my training plan (B+): I have my training plan on my refrigerator, and I write on it and highlight it as I do my workouts. I have run the amount of days I a supposed to for every run, but I have cut some runs short due to heat and run a bit slower than I was supposed to again due to heat.

2011-04-12104618

Read my Bible every day (A-): I have been reading every day during the weekdays, but some Saturdays I wasn’t home or forgot. I am very proud of my consistency on weekdays though and plan to keep this up forever! I have a routine now, after I run in the mornings I sit outside with the pups and read while I cool off.

Foam roll (D+): Oh boy. I am ashamed to say I haven’t been rolling like I should be. I keep the foam roller upstairs in the bonus room so honestly, if I don’t go up there I just plain forget. I am going to really try and do better with this one this month, I don’t want to get injured again!

Take more pictures with my DSLR camera (F): Oy. This was a major, major fail. I don’t think I picked up my camera at all this month. How embarrassing! My iPhone is just so convenient. We are going to the beach next week, and I am DEFINITELY going to take a bunch of photos with my good camera. This is another one I am determined to do better on!

DSC_0049

————————————–

July Goals

Foam Roll: See failed June goal above. Enough said.

Take more photos with my DSLR camera: ditto ditto ditto. I hang my head in shame.

Read 2 books: I truly love reading, and am hoping to accomplish part of this goal when I go to the beach next week. Should be a no brainer, right?

Unplug more on the weekends: I know I will never completely unplug for a whole day (I can’t since I work some on the weekends via the internet/email) but I would love to stay off social media more often on the weekends and enjoy life with my family. I will still blog and occasionally tweet etc. But I don’t want to sit in front of a computer on the weekends.

Cook 2 new recipes: I made a enchilada casserole with ground turkey last week and Bobby loved it, so now I want to explore some more new recipes. I get tired of eating the same stuff every week. I need to add meals to my arsenal!

DSC_0920

QOTD: What is a goal you have for July?
