tr-22520-2

However, my favorite thing about this race is that it s for a great cause:

“By entering this race you will also be running for a cause! A percentage of your race fee will be donated to Give The Kids The World. Give Kids The World Village is a 79-acre, nonprofit resort in Central Florida that provides week long, cost-free vacations to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Please visit givekidstheworld.org for more information.”

I have never visited Give Kids the World, but I have checked out their website and know people who have gone there before with their families. It it an amazing organization and I am happy to support them!

QOTD: Have you heard of Give Kids the World? What is your favorite charity to support?

Disclosure: I was provided a free entry into this race, but totally would have signed up anyway! All opinions are my own.

Christmas Gift Guide for the Fitness Lover

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again! I am trying to be ahead of the game with my shopping this year, so thought I would go ahead and get my gift guide up to nudge you along as well. Enjoy and happy shopping!

gift guide fitness

1.) ASICS Gel Quantum 360 running shoe: This show came out this past summer, and it rocks! I wasn’t sure what all the hype was about until I tried it for myself, and it’s like running on a cloud! If you love a comfy shoe, give this one a try. It comes in really awesome colors, too. (Ocean not included Smile)

2.) RunnerBox: Runnerbox is a subscription service that sends you bi-monthly boxes of goodies used by runners (and discounts, too!) and they also have a tri box and cycle box. Running stuff can get expensive, so having sample sizes to try out to see if you like are a great idea! I have gotten two boxes and liked both of them a lot, and amazed at how many products they can fit into such a tiny box. I loved the shampoo/conditioner and protein powder in this box. Good stuff!

3.) Foam roller: Anyone into fitness gets sore muscles, and can benefit from this bad boy! A lot of people swear by their expensive ones, but I have a cheap one form Wal-Mart and it works fine for me. Just make sure you wrap it up in a box as to not give away the gift. Smile

4.) EOS lip balm: In the winter when I run outside my lips get super chapped, and I am constantly using this stuff, and it stays on for a long time and is easy to carry around. I keep one in my purse, car, and gym bag. So many great flavors, too. Grab some to stick in your loved ones stockings.

5.) Fitbit or other fitness tracker: These babies are all the rage lately, and now there are so many different brands to choose from. I personally have a Fitbit, but have heard great things about other brands as well. It is a great motivator on days when I am at my desk for a long time. It just helps me to be more aware of how much I am moving (or NOT moving!) throughout the day. I like mine well enough but think I would rather one that you wear on your arm. I have lost one because it popped off my pants before.

IMG_2551-2_thumb

6.) Running Skirts.com skirt: I have loved this brand for years, and they just keep coming out with the cutest patterns (check out the Kona print!) These skirts are comfy, have pockets, and you can get them with briefs underneath or shorts underneath. Lots to choose from!

7.) Hidrate spark water bottle: I learned about this bottle via a press release a few months ago and forgot about it, then heard about it again recently on the radio while it was still in the Kickstarter phase. This bottle lights up when it’s time to drink, and connects to your phone so you know exactly how much water you have consumed through the day. So cool, and comes in cute colors. I don’t have one of these yet so I can’t say for certain I love it seems so, so cool.

8.) Yurbuds: I have been a Yurbuds lover for many years after buying my first pair at a race expo some time ago. They are one of the only brands I have found that actually stay in my ear, and hold up to daily wear and tear. They have several different models ranging in price, but I have always gotten the cheaper pair and they hold up just fine! I am only on my second pair in five years! (and I use them a lot).

9.) Love Grown Foods: Love Grown was one of the sponsors of the Refresh Summit, and I really enjoyed their hot oats for breakfast. If you like to give food as a gift, this is a great one!

10.) Fabletics Salar Capris: These are my FAVORITE tights from Fabletics. They are stretchy and fit great, and they come in adorable patterns, with new ones online every month. So far my favorites are these northern lights ones.

QOTD: What is on your Christmas wish list?

Running and the Family Vacation

Hello! I am sadly home from Disney, but I am headed out today again for the weekend to speak at Refresh Summit in Tennessee! I will be back Sunday night and blogging will resume next week! In the meantime, please enjoy this guest post from Michelle.

A few times a year, when my school is on a break week, I pile my kids in the car and head from South Carolina to Florida so my parents and in-laws can see their grand-children. These trips are usually viewed as somewhat of a vacation for me, as we are out of the usual routine and structure that generally runs our life. I’ve discovered, though, that intentional planning must be done in order to maintain my running schedule while out of my routine. It’s actually much more difficult to be as disciplined as I need to be about my running with the eating out, impromptu outings with friends, chats with family and friends that run past my bedtime, etc. These things add up and can easily take a toll on my performance.

While I love that running is something that I can do anywhere, I can’t deny that it has added a wrinkle or two when I travel.

unnamed (40)

Here a few tips that I have found to keep my training on track while I’m away:

-Enlist the help of a buddy, even in a different locale.

Since I’m returning to my hometown, I’m lucky that I have a couple of friends who are willing to lace up and go out with me. Was it a little strange to send a Facebook message to someone I haven’t physically seen or talked to in 20 years? Yes. Was it completely worth it to have this person run 8 miles with me and share childhood memories? You bet. I’m so glad I reached out.

unnamed (41)

-Plan your running times, just as you would at home.

I try to run on the same schedule as I do at home. I’m very intentional about it. I can’t view it as something that I’ll do “if I have time”. I MAKE the time and plan other things around it.

-Get enough rest.

On my last trip, I nonchalantly believed that staying out late and getting only 3 hours of sleep wouldn’t be that big of a deal the night before a long run day. Boy, did my body have a different story for me the next morning. It was a painful 4 miles, instead of the nice 7 I had planned to do. Lesson learned.

-Stay hydrated.

This is good advice all the time, but I think it’s even harder when we’re out of our normal surroundings. In my case, my hometown’s water is AWFUL to drink. Because my parents usually eat most meals out when we visit, I find myself drinking more soda than I should, but the tap water just isn’t good. So I have to consciously remember to make up for it and drink lots of the bottled water that we keep at my folk’s house.

-Allow yourself an indulgence or two, but watch your eating.

There are several meals that I look forward to when I visit my folks. But I’m finding that my body performs better when it gets better food. So when we want a meal of fried shrimp, sweet potato fries coleslaw and hushpuppies (don’t judge!), I try to make sure we go on the same day that I’ve run, and then make sure that my other meals are more balanced. I run better and I feel better.

-Pack your gear. Whatever you use at home, plan to have with you.

It’s a little strange to me that my running gear now needs a bag all by itself. Hydration backpack, good socks, blister protection, Glide, KTape…..Do I really need to carry ALL of my gear across three states to have a good run? Well, it’s certainly easier if I do. Fortunately I’m driving, and I have a big trunk.

unnamed (42)

That’s how I keep myself on track while I travel. What other tips do you have?

The Instabreaker

Tracking Pixel

OtterBox has saved my phone many times and has asked me to share my experiences while telling you about their awesome cases. All opinions are my own.

I will admit it. I am obsessed with my mobile phone. It’s constantly in my hand due to work commitments, and I am on social media a lot. Due to the sheer amount of time I spend holding my phone, it should be no surprise that it has also been in a few….accidents. Most of my accidents have to do with two things: running, and my baby. First running:

For safety purposes alone, I always run with my phone. I also like to listen to podcasts, and occasionally music. I am not a fan of armbands, so I usually just hold my phone (this annoys my husband to no end, he cannot fathom holding something for an entire run.) Anyway, my hands get sweaty, and my phone has been known to let’s say…jump right out onto the pavement. Luckily, my OtterBox has saved me on MULTIPLE occasions.

OtterBox 2

Secondly, I have an eleven month old baby who thinks my phone is the coolest thing ever. She also thinks putting things in her mouth is the coolest thing ever. So, a lot of times my phone ends up covered in drool, or getting thrown at the dog. As you can imagine, this is not good for the life expectancy of a phone.

OtterBox has not only saved my phone several times, but they have also come up with a fun quiz to let you know what your phone wrecker style is. Also, if you share your results, you can will get 10% off a case of your own. Me? According to the results, I am the Instabreaker which seems fitting!

OtterBox

Here is a little bit more info about OtterBox:

Most of the OtterBox cases are easy to carry around (the defender being the exception). This is huge because the last thing I need is something big taking up space in my purse or in my hand. They also have some really adorable designs and are quite fashionable, and allow for some self expression!

OtterBox

The MySymmetry series is a clear case with inserts that you can customize. They are really slim, too and have great pocketability. Again, this is a huge plus to me!

OtterBox

I encourage you to go take the Phone Wrecker quiz for yourself, I would love to see your results in the comments below! Also, OtterBox is hosting a Twitter chat on September 16th at 9 AM PST. Be sure to join in, you could win great PRIZES!

QOTD: What type of phone wrecker are you? Share your Phone Breaker quiz result via social media or email and receive a 10% discount code to use on your next order at OtterBox.com! The coupon cannot be combined with any other special offer.

5 Things Friday

1.) September 11th. Where were you? I was a junior in high school and I still remember sitting in class, and another teacher came in and whispered something into my teachers ear. I will never forget the look on his face, it still makes me stomach turn. Let’s continue to pray for the families of the victims, and for our country as a whole.

2.) Fall decorations. What is the “rule” in your house on when you decorate? typically I decorate labor day weekend/beginning of September, but I haven’t yet. Emma Kate’s birthday party is the 19th and I don’t want the house to look cluttered with fall décor + her party decorations, so I may just wait until after that.

photo 33

3.) The treadmill boost. I ran on the treadmill yesterday, and my time was way better than it has been outside (air conditioning plus running on a belt changes many things!) What are your thoughts on this? I know running outside is totally different, but I really needed the confidence boost of running in the non 100+ degree heat to see what I could do.

unnamed (3)

4.) Recipe help. I need some new, EASY and QUICK chicken recipes. Help a sister out. I’m getting tired of the same old stuff. I have a great enchilada soup recipe I will start once it gets cooler!

5.) Gorgeous clothes. Check out my new Fabletics outfit. Isn’t it gorgeous? I am loving the romantic print and deep purple. I will post a pic soon of me wearing it. We are supposed to have cooler weather this weekend so maybe I will run in it!

QOTD: Where were you September 11? Any links to easy chicken recipes? When do you decorate for fall?

Disclosure: I was provided with this outfit by Fabletics, however all opinions are my own.

Beach Trip 2015: Day 1

We woke up early Sunday morning to drive down to the beach. We had thunderstorms and heavy rain most of the way down, which is not something you care to drive through on your way to the beach. We finally arrived after lunch and my parents were already there. We checked into the Henderson Park Inn in Destin, Florida, and our room was ready.

HPI

It was still cloudy, but not raining, and the forecast looked good for the rest of the trip, hooray!

HPI1

We were in an executive suite on the second floor. They have so much room, and of course a great view (beach photo above was taken from our balcony).

HPI2

When we entered our room, there was music playing, and roses, grapes, and wine on our bed.

HPI3

We unloaded the car, caught up with my parents, and soon enough it was time for happy hour! Henderson Park Inn has daily happy hour from 4-5 for the guests in it’s 35 rooms. It’s up on the deck overlooking the beach.

HPI4

After hanging out at the tiki hut, Bobby and I went down to the beach to take some pictures in my new shoes ASICS sent me. The Gel Quantum 360 comes out July 15, and I wanted to get some shots in t hem to share on social media and my blog since the “gel” shoe is “jellyfish” (jelly =Gel-y) themed.

asics shoes

We decided we didn’t feel like getting all dressed for dinner, so we ordered pizza and had them deliver it to the deck. We sat outside listening to the waves eating pizza. It was perfect! Later, we went for a walk on the beach.

HPI5

HPI6

We were all tired from traveling so we hit the hay. Bobby and I managed to watch about half of a movie before I fell asleep. I needed my rest for a big day at the beach the next day, of course.

QOTD: What is your favorite beach to visit?

All 4 Run: Virtual Run Recap + 4th of July

I completed my “All 4 Run” virtual race this past weekend. Gone for a RUN put on yet another fun race with a great shirt and medal included. I ran on Friday July 3rd because I knew the 4th would be pretty busy!

IMG_6154 (2)

It was a hot morning and I didn’t get started until mid morning. I’m really not sure why I thought this time frame was a good idea.

IMG_6155 (2)

I ran one of my favorite routes in a nearby neighborhood and tried to find some shade. It was tough and hilly, but I got it done! Of course I had to dress the patriotic part, too. While my time didn’t reflect a race pace, I am glad I had a fun event of my own to participate in.

IMG_6152 (2) - Copy

I really enjoyed doing this run. I decided not to run our local 4th of July 5k because it’s very hot and very crowded, and we had two parties to attend that day so this worked out better for me. I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and that you were able to get a race or a run in!

————————–

On the 4th of July, we had two fun parties to go to. Our life group at church had a lunch get together, and our neighborhood had a dinner potluck plus fireworks. It was fun to have a full day of hanging out with friends and meeting some of my neighbors (we have a pretty big neighborhood so a ton of people I don’t know).

4th of july

Emma Kate’s shoes stayed on for about 2.5 minutes. Oh well. I got to wear my flag sandals that I wear exactly one time per year.

IMG_6176 (2)

QOTD: Have you ever participated in a virtual run?

As a Gone for a run Ambassador, I received free entry into the virtual race.

Timex Ironman One GPS+

I am a numbers nerd. I love knowing my times, paces, distances, and the like. I am also a tech nerd, and love checking out the latest and greatest technology. The Timex Ironman One GPS+ watch is definitely for a techy numbers girl like me. You had me at touch screen, my friend.

IMG_3907 (2)

This watch has so many cool features that it took me awhile of exploring and playing with it to learn everything, but I think I have a pretty good handle on it now. So, let’s start with the basics:

-Phone-free connectivity with AT&T (first year is free)

-Ability to track speed, distance and pace in real-time and instantaneously

-share performance metrics via apps like Run Keeper, Strava, etc.

-Always-on, sunlight readable Qualcomm® Mirasol™ display for easy reading

-Tracking capabilities that include a custom-built safety solution

-Built-in MP3 component that stores and plays music via your bluetooth headphones. It includes 4GB of storage right on your watch!

-Send messages to people in your contacts list, and have new messages displayed right on your device

IMG_4020 (2)

Did I mention it is water resistant up to 50 meters and can communicate your location to family and friends via an SOS if you are in trouble?

Without the GPS on the watch can last 72 hours as a stand alone watch, and up to eight hours with all of the cool functions being used.

IMG_3909 (2)

As I mentioned before I had to consult the online user guide for a couple of things and get the hang of a touch screen GPS watch, but now I’m really liking it! My only two issues I have noticed so far is that the touch screen isn’t sensitive enough sometimes and I have to hit it a couple times before it reads my touch, and the watch itself is kind of big. I totally get why, I mean who would want an itty bitty touch screen, but just thought it was worth mentioning. Once I start running I hardly notice the size/weight though, and the pros by far outweigh these two minor things.

IMG_4022 (2)

If you are like me and you love geeking out over the latest and coolest gadgets, then this product is something you should check out. It is far more advanced than any GPS watch I have ever owned, and the safety features make me feel much better about running alone than with other watches I have. If you have any questions, I would love to try to answer them for you!

QOTD: what is your favorite feature in this watch? What is your favorite thing about GPS watches in general?

This post is sponsored by FitFluential.

#NoExcuses to Stink

I am a heavy sweater. That, combined with living in a very hot and humid climate make for a hot mess after a run or race. No one likes to be in the car all gross after a run, and no one wants to hang out post race when they are stinky (no one would ever want to stand by me!) I think it is genius that ShowerPill created these awesome body wipes for people like me.

showerpill

These wipes come individually wrapped in a ten pack, and can be used on your whole body. They kill 99.9% of germs and have Aloe Vera and Vitamin E.

They are safe for sensitive skin, and have no alcohol. Also, they contain a quick dry solution so you don’t have to dry off afterwards.

I like to throw one in my gear check bag for races, or when I know I have to run and then go run some errands, I throw one in my purse to use in the car.

IMG_3975 (2)

A ten pack of wipes only costs $9.99, BUT, right now on their website, you can try a trial for only $1.00!! Totally worth the trial, and I’m sure you will love them as much as I do. I am running the Crescent City Classic 10k Easter weekend, and you can bet I will be bringing along a ShowerPill body wipe. It’s for the sake of my family and friends of course. Smile

Basically, it helps you to have #NoExcuses for not working out. No more can you say “oh, but I have to go get groceries, pick up the baby, and go to the post office so I can’t go to the gym”. Sorry, but yes you can!

QOTD: What do you do after a run or race to get rid of the “ick” when you can’t shower right away?

Disclosure: I was compensated for this post via Fit Approach and ShowerPill, however these wipes really are awesome and all opinions are my own.
