Taper Madness

Well folks, it is officially taper time! Now, one would think a runner would love this time, be happy about this time, excited to not have to log as many miles per week. Well, it is quite the opposite! I am going CrAzY! As it is, I already feel less confident since I did 18 miles, but not my 20 miler, and with Christmas and all the bad food..I am just getting a little nervous about the marathon!

I was supposed to run 8 miles Sunday, but it was in the 20’s with crazy wind, so I said no worries, I will run Monday (today) well…it is JUST as cold today! So instead I am going to do 3 miles then try for my 8 miler again tomorrow, then this weekend I will do 6, with a couple of short runs next week. I can’t believe we are this close! I have worked my butt off for this race, and it is finally here. I feel like everyday I am losing fitness. I feel like I need to go out right now and run 20 miles. I feel like I should only eat fruits and veggies for the next two weeks. Someone make me stop!

I try to remind myself that this is my first marathon. my goals are to FINISH and enjoy it (at least a little bit.) I have no desire to kill myself reaching a time goal, or more importantly stress myself out over one. I try to remember that I DID run 18 miles, and even if I had to WALK the last 8 miles, I could still FINISH! (Hopefully this won’t happen haha!)

Legs, please please carry me for 26.2 miles!!!

Body, be proud of how far you have come in the past two years!

I wrote this post back when I was still having IT band problems, and I was doing a “mini taper” for a half marathon. I stated in the post I was hoping by the marathon I would feel confident in my training to get me though. Well….I have really REALLY been trying to tell myself that, but I think there is only so far I can go thinking that having NEVER run the distance before. I used to get so nervous running half marathons but now I don’t because I KNOW I can complete the distance. With no past marathon experiences, it is a lot harder! I know I will get more and more nervous as it gets closer, but I am trying to stay positive and have faith in myself and my training.

  1. You’re running the Disney Marathon right? I’m doing the Half the day before. I am starting my tapering right now and I TOTALLY hear you about feeling like you are losing fitness. Since I hurt my IT bands early last month, I had to take 2 weeks off of my regular training plan and then work my mileage back up. I just got it back up last week with a long run of 10 miles (my 2nd 10-miler of the plan) and then now I am going back down this week. Today during my easy 3 mile run I got a TERRIBLE stitch at 2 miles and I had to stop once to catch my breath. I feel like I am losing fitness and I am scared for my race! I have never ran more than 10 miles at a time, so 13.1 is scary to me!

I think the important thing for both of us is to stay calm, breath, and just have fun! Easier said than done, but let’s work together! 😉

    You’ve got this girl! 🙂

    • you have so got this! for my first half (last years disney) I have never run more than 10 miles, and I had just had one 8 and one 10 mile run, and I did fine! (my time was slow but I finished! you can do it! thanks for the encouragement.

  2. I felt fat not being able to run off the carbs. =P

  3. Good luck!! You can do it!!!!!!

  4. That is so exciting! Good Luck!!
How did you overcome your IT band issues? I’m currently training for my first half and my IT band started bothering me once I hit 6 miles and then was doing longer shorter runs. I have six weeks until my race and I’m already getting nervous lol.

    • when it hurts, stop! you will just make it worse. Do you have an IT band strap? i run with one on and it helps. I ice and stretch a LOT as well as foam roll every day. i started doing some strength exercises for my legs and hips like lunges and squats to strengthen the muscles around my leg. I took 4 weeks off and slowly started again and was ok! I still stretch and foam roll, but dont ice except after my weekly long run! hope that helps!

      • Thank you so much for the suggestions! I will definitely try them. 🙂 Its so encouraging to see someone who has dealt with it about to run a marathon!!

        • good luck! from everything I read you need to get to the “healing” stage before you start strength training and running, so it needs rest time to get there. I think icing foam rolling and stretching helped me get there faster!

  5. You will do GREAT! Do not worry! Just take your time, enjoy it(after all it is a DISNEY race). You have trained for a long time for this and you will do amazing!

  6. You’re going to do great! Remember to enjoy every moment of it – you only get to run your 1st marathon once 🙂

  7. Hi! getting to the taper week is so exciting!! The most i ran for this marathon was 18 miles too, no problem, you’ll get through the 26.2 no problem at all. You’ll be in your favorite place on earth so how can you have anything but fun?! I hope we can meet up before the marathon, like in the staging area, they make us wait for a couple of hours. I’ll email you and Katye with a meeting spot. It will be exciting to meet you but extra exciting to meet you right before you go run your very first marathon! yay!

    • I hate the long wait, esp last year since it was so cold! I have another running group I am meeting up with that morning so I need to find out what time they are meeting, too!

  8. Tapering was the toughest part of training for me. Trust in all the miles you have run. Trust in the rest days you took when they were needed. Enjoy this adventure!

  9. I feel exactly the same way. My two week taper for the half and full disney marathons is driving me crazy. I keep adding miles to my supposed taper when I know I shouldn’t. I feel like I’m losing fitness too! Good luck in the full!

P.S. Found your blog through ROTE. I’m InIrons on the boards 🙂

  10. Ahh tapering is so not fun! It’s completely normal to doubt everything. Just trust the plan. You will be fine on race day. I promise 🙂

  11. You will FINISH! You will do great! Be sure to take LOTS of pics! I expect some super dorky ones from you to rival my FroZone pic…

  12. You will be fine! You know you got 18 – walk it in if you have to – you would be surprised how many people are walking at the end (prob more walkers than runners) So excited for you! I have been taking my mind off the taper by obsessing about the weather – ha…
