Weekly Workout Recap: January 2014 Week 4

Happy Sunday! This week was quite odd as I was in California then traveled home after being gone most of the month. I wasn’t sure how I would feel after Tinkerbell, and if I’m being honest, the answer is VERY burnt out on running.

So, I did what I felt my body needed…and I didn’t run. Genius, I know. I didn’t run for six days, and when I DID finally run, it was slow and I hated every step of it. I am hoping to get my mojo back in time for Princess next month, then I am taking a distance break.

Here is what this week looked like, day by day:

Sunday: Tinkerbell half marathon

Monday: walked around the parks all day

Tuesday: rest/travel day

Wednesday: rest

Thursday: 20 minutes elliptical

Friday: 30 minutes stationary bike

Saturday: 3.1 mile run

I mentioned last week that I pulled my back at the airport. It has been slowly getting better, but yesterday after my run it really started bothering me again, so I will probably lay off the running until it’s healed.

I have also been using this sunscreen from Skin Authority, I like it because it doesn’t have any dyes or fragrances in it, and it also moisturizes as it protects.

QOTD: How soon do you go back to running after a race?

  1. I hurt my back at one of those trampoline arena places and it was right at the beginning of my training for the Disneyland half this past year. I ended up taking a full month off because the pain was so horrible whenever I ran. I was lucky enough that the pain disappeared right after that!

  2. I took a two week break after Dopey and was happy to give my body a rest. You probably need a big break after back to back race weekends.,

It’s hard for me to go a few days without running. I usually wait about 2-3 days. Any longer and I get antsy. Last year I finished my goal of running a half marathon each month. I thought I was sick of running, but I just needed something to spruce up my running menu. I’m training for a marathon. Yikes!! Good luck with recovering.

    • That’s great Hannah! I’d expected to be antsy to get back out & run after a few days off. Surprisingly I wasn’t (which was kind of a disappointment), but maybe, like you, I need to find a way to spruce things up a bit. Can you tell me what you’ve done to make/keep it fresh?

    • Wow that’s awesome!

  4. Last weekend I ran both the Tinker Bell 10k and Half. What a fun race weekend it was!!! I gave myself a break this week and ran just under 3 miles yesterday and it felt good! But, I wasn’t coming off of Dopey and a back injury.

Listen to your body and give it the break it deserves. Good luck on your recovery and with Princess! That pink C2C is waiting for you!

  5. I haven’t done any kind of cardio since marathon weekend. Training for the half was just so unfun that I also feel like a distance running break is needed. I’ll still work out, but hold back on long distance for a while.

  6. I usually wait at least a few days after a long race to get back into the swing of things – Disney is always an exception though since park time is a factor. The walking does help keep my legs fresher though. My first run post-Tink was on Wednesday (7 miles). I planned on skipping it but my legs felt ready for a run surprisingly. I’m also training for a full marathon on March 1 so I need to keep up with my training.

  7. Good move! After the previous couple of races I went right back to running on my regular schedule, but with half the usual distance. But after Tink, I was pretty sick of running so I too this whole last week off, not running again until yesterday, 1 full week after Tink. I didn’t hate it, but wasn’t thrilled either. It’ll be interesting to see how this week goes.

    • Maybe I should have waited longer than 6 days, esp after the combo of dopey/tink. It was not pretty.

      • Probably so. You put yourself through a *lot*. I remember after Dumbo last year I was pretty wiped for a few days. After Dopey/Tink your body must have screaming for rest. One thing I’ve experienced, and you may have had the same, is that if I don’t give myself the downtime I need eventually my body will force it, usually by getting sick. Please be careful that the same doesn’t happen to you–especially with having strained your back, too.
