Bobby’s Duathlon May, 2013

May 27, 2013 | fitness, Race Recaps, running

On Saturday, Bobby participated in his first duathlon. This one consisted of a two mile run, followed by an 11.2 mile bike ride, then another 2 mile run. Luckily, the race was five minutes up the road at the community center. I shot a video while I was there, you can check it out on yesterday’s post.

We also lucked up with the weather, it was gorgeous and cool for late May, so it was a perfect race to spectate.

The race started at 8:00, so we got there at 7:30 so Bobby could register and get his transition area set up. The 2 miles were an out and back followed by a 11.2 mile bike lop then the out and back two miles again.

duathlon3

Bobby hadn’t ridden more than 6 miles on his bike since April, so we were both interested to see how he would do. The gun went off, and everyone took off down the road. Within ten minutes the first man was back. Wow! He hopped on his bike and was gone. I waited on Bobby then timed his transition for him as he got on the bike and left. About 40 minutes later, he appeared again and began his last stretch of the race.

duathlon2

I had fun watching everyone come into the finish, and I did a lot of cheering for strangers. I soon spotted Bobby and got some pictures of him coming across the finish line. He did it!

I think I’d rather a duathlon than a tri as I don’t feel as strong on the swimming.

Well done to Bobby on doing his first one!

That’s awesome, congrats Bobby! I really want my boyfriend to train for a du with me because he loves bike riding and is naturally good at running. Unfortunately, he hates running and “retired” from running after doing two 5Ks with me earlier this year, haha. It’s so unfortunately because he can run a 7 min mile pretty much without even trying. UGH. 🙂

Congrats to Bobby! Why do you think the swim in triathlons is the least preferred or people feel the least comfortable doing it?

    • Heather says

      May 28, 2013 at 7:16 am

I know fear of open water swims is a big one, getting out in the middle of a lake or ocean can cause panic!

Congrats to Bobby! Sounds like he had a great race!

Having been a swimmer for many years, I’ve always thought I would do well in a tri…maybe someday.

How fun!! I would LOVE to do a duathlon… there are very few here, but lots of triathlons. Trying to decide if I’m up for tackling the swim portion again… 🙂

OMG, this is awesome! Congrats to Bobby! I didn’t even know Duathlons existed until your post. And this is just what I wanted and didn’t even know it. I have considered the possibility of a tri, but I am NOT a good swimmer but this would be perfect. Question, did Bobby take bike riding/road racing lessons or did he do any type of special training for the biking portion? Thanks…

We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we just needed a break from the noise.
What we found in Florida was something better than that. #ad

Our first stop in Auburndale was all about slowing down in the best way. We stayed in a cozy tiny home at Camp Margaritaville (you can also stay in an RV!). We enjoyed coffee on the porch, our daughter loved the pool and waterslide (there is even a splash zone for the littles!), and at night we slowed things down with s’mores instead of screens. It felt like nature + comfort + family time all finally in the same place. They have so many other amenities like mini golf, golf cart rentals, pickleball, a playground, cornhole, and more. Nearby, we explored the Florida Children’s Museum and had incredible food and drinks at Smith’s American Tavern and Black & Brew Coffee.

Then, we headed over to Fort Myers to experience a completely different side of the state. Shelling walks at sunrise, beach volleyball, pool cabanas, and the kind of Gulf sunsets that make everyone go quiet for a minute. Direct beach access at the Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers made it effortless to go from “let’s check it out” to toes in the sand in minutes. There were several restaurants on property, so we never even got in our car. That plus live music, fire pits, the spa, and lawn games made it easy to want to stay put and relax.

What stood out most wasn’t just the scenery… it was how easy it was to actually be together here. No rushing or overplanning. That’s the true Floridays feeling for me. Laid-back, a little unexpected, and exactly what we didn’t know we needed. 🌴☀️

One of our favorite family activities in Pigeon Forge because you can snow tube year-round, rain or shine, without worrying about the weather outside.

My daughter could do the tubing hill over and over, and the indoor snow play area makes it even more fun. Honestly such a good break from the summer heat. Plus, it’s super close to nearby attractions like Dollywood and several mountain coasters.

Here is my favorite in park Disneyland character e Here is my favorite in park Disneyland character experience: The Plaza Inn character breakfast. Here are a few things to know:

✨ Meet Minnie before you even enter the restaurant and get photos with her + a photopass photographer.
✨ Food is all you can eat. Minnie waffles, bacon, eggs, pastries, fruit, and more!
✨ Multiple characters visit your table throughout the meal.
✨ Reservations are a must and can book up quickly!

This was such a fun way to start a park day and meet several characters without spending part of the day waiting in character lines.

Getting in a walk or run when I can. Actually drinking my water. Sticking to a skincare routine instead of overthinking it. Paying attention to my hair and scalp instead of just throwing it up and moving on. Nothing extreme, just consistency in the basics.

I’ve also been using Mochi Health for personalized skincare and hair support, and it’s made it way easier to stay on track without guessing what my skin or hair needs.

Dancing Bear Appalachian Bistro took part in Cork to Fork on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, and every bite felt like a love letter to local flavor. From bourbon-glazed pork belly to a warm cinnamon-bourbon bread pudding that honestly didn’t stand a chance at our table… this was one of those meals you remember.

Mountain views, chef-driven dishes, and whiskey worked right into the menu in the best way. 😋
