Mother’s Day is just around the corner and that means only one thing; it’s time to think about how you’re going to celebrate the woman in your life that’s always been there. Whether she’s your mom, your step-mom, your grandma, or even another woman that’s stepped in when you need it the most, she deserves to be celebrated. You don’t necessarily need to spend loads of money either!
Mother’s Day should be about making her feel special and letting her know how thankful you are for everything that she’d done for you. If you’re stuck for Mother’s Day ideas this year, you’re in the right place – so let’s take a look at some thoughtful ways of giving back to her this year. After all, she deserves it.
Start the day off right
An easy morning is quite literally heaven for those that have to worry about everyone else’s needs from the moment they open their eyes. Even if you can’t afford to give your mom anything this year, making her morning easier will go a long way. That might mean waking her up with a warm cup of coffee in bed, or it might mean taking care of the people she usually takes care of so that she can sleep in.
For example, if you’ve got younger siblings that need adult supervision, take over for the morning. Make their breakfast, get them ready for school, and have them take in something thoughtful to your mom. She will appreciate the time to herself and you’ll get a glimpse of all of the wonderful things she does every single day.
If she’s the type of person that likes to be active in the mornings, why not suggest a peaceful morning walk? You could head to a local coffee shop and start the day off right with the woman that loves you the most.
Get her a thoughtful gift
While gifts aren’t necessary, they’re also a nice touch. When it comes to buying your mom something for Mother’s Day, it doesn’t mean you’ve got to spend the earth. It means you’ve got to find something that’s meaningful and shows her how much you appreciate her.
This could be a scrapbook of all of your favorite memories together, or you could even write her a letter to tell her all of the things that you (and let’s be honest) should probably say more often.
If you do want to get her a gift, why not buy her something that will make her think of you? Think about things that she loves. Maybe she’s into jewelry, so something like a necklace from Kendra Scott would be the perfect touch. Or maybe she’s always got her head in a book? A new novel by her favourite author will go a long way in showing her how much you care.
Gift her your time
If you really can’t afford to buy her anything, that’s absolutely fine! Most Motherly figures will tell you not to spend your money on her anyway. Instead, why not give her your time? Even if it’s spending the day together sorting through the attic or doing some gardening, real facetime makes a world of difference.
If you don’t live with her, why not invite her over for a home cooked meal? If you do, take over the cooking for the night and let her sit back and relax.
Give her a break from her usual routine
If there’s one thing all motherly figures have in common, it’s that she will always put everyone else before herself. But, everyone deserves a break every now and then, and Mother’s Day is the perfect day for it.
As mentioned above, you could take over her morning routine or insist on cooking dinner so that she can relax. Or it could be other things like going to the grocery store or running different errands for her. It might not seem like much, but it really will go a long way for your mom.
You could even go all out and turn the day into a mini at-home spa experience. Run her a warm bubble bath, light some candles, put on some relaxing music, and let her have some proper me-time. Throw in a face mask or a fancy body lotion, and she’ll feel like she’s been to an actual spa without leaving the house.
Plan a special day for her
Some people would rather spend a free day doing absolutely nothing. Others would rather get out there and make more memories. Plan a day that suits her preferences so that she can truly have the best Mother’s Day.
For example, if she loves being outdoors, you could plan a nature walk or a visit to a botanical garden. Or maybe she would prefer attending a pottery class followed by brunch where you could chat over lattes and muffins?
If she’s the type that prefers to relax at home, plan a movie day you know she’ll love. Even if that means getting hold of some of the classics like Grease or Dirty Dancing, she’ll love rewatching some of her favourite films with her favourite people. Don’t forget to load up on her favourite drinks and snacks!
End the day with something heartfelt
Finally, after a day of spoiling the motherly figure in your life, don’t forget to end it with something heartfelt. Perhaps you could arrange for a bouquet of flowers to be delivered after dinner, or maybe you could write a note and leave it on her pillow?
Remember if you can’t be with your mom this Mother’s Day, it doesn’t mean you can’t do something special for her. We live in a world with technology that can put us in touch at the push of a button, so drop her a video call or send her a voice note. Even something that might seem small to you will make a huge difference to her. And remember, if you’ve got a motherly figure in your life to cherish them always!
