8 Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Activities that are Perfect for a Family Spring Break

March 3, 2025 | Travel

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Visit Alabama’s Beaches, however, all opinions are my own.

Spring break is the perfect time to escape to the beautiful beaches of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. With its white sandy shores, stunning sunsets, and an abundance of family-friendly activities, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores offer the ultimate getaway for families looking to relax, explore, and make unforgettable memories. Whether you prefer adventure, nature, or just some laid-back fun in the sun, here are eight activities that are perfect for a family spring break in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.

1. Enjoy a Beach Day at Gulf State Park Beach Pavilion:

A trip to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores wouldn’t be complete without a day spent at the beach, and Gulf State Park’s Beach pavilion is a great one to visit. With over three miles of pristine beaches, the area provides plenty of space to set up for a day of sandcastle building, swimming, and sunbathing. The park also offers restrooms, parking, and a shary covering, giving families the recipe for a great day to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Don’t forget to bring along a frisbee, boogie boards, and plenty of sunscreen!

2. Take a Dolphin Cruise:

One of the most exciting ways to experience the Gulf waters is by taking a dolphin cruise. Several tour companies in the area offer boat rides where families can watch playful dolphins jump and swim alongside the vessel. These cruises are both entertaining and educational, as guides share interesting facts about marine life in the region. Kids and adults alike will be delighted to see dolphins in their natural habitat, making this a must-do activity for your spring break itinerary.

3. Visit the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo:

For families who love animals, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is a fantastic stop. Known as the “Little Zoo That Could,” this charming zoo is home to over 300 animals, including tigers, lemurs, kangaroos, and sloths. Kids can enjoy up-close encounters with some of the animals through special experiences like sloth encounters and giraffe feedings. The zoo also has a playground and picnic area, making it a great half-day excursion for families with young children.

4. Explore The Wharf at Orange Beach:

The Wharf is a lively entertainment district that offers something for the whole family. Take a ride on The Wharf’s Ferris wheel, one of the tallest in the Southeast, and enjoy breathtaking views of the coast. Families can also explore the shops, grab a bite to eat at one of the delicious restaurants, or catch a live show at the amphitheater. In the evenings, don’t miss the SPECTRA Laser Light Experience, a dazzling light and sound show that’s free to the public.

5. Paddleboarding or Kayaking in the Back Bays:

For a more peaceful and scenic adventure, rent paddle boards or kayaks and explore the calm waters of the Back Bays in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. This is a great way to connect with nature and experience the local wildlife, including birds, fish, and sometimes even dolphins! Many rental companies offer guided tours, which can be a fun and educational experience for the whole family. This activity is perfect for older kids and parents who enjoy a little bit of exercise with their sightseeing.

6. Learn to Build Sandcastles with Sand Castle University:

Take your sandcastle-building skills to the next level with a lesson from Sand Castle University! This fun and interactive experience is perfect for families looking to create incredible sand sculptures on the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Professional instructors provide all the tools and techniques needed to craft impressive castles, sea creatures, and more. It’s a unique and creative way to spend time at the beach while making lasting memories together.

7. Have Fun at The Track Family Fun Park:

For a day packed with excitement, visit The Track Family Fun Park in Gulf Shores. This attraction offers go-kart racing, bumper boats, mini-golf, and a variety of arcade games that provide endless fun for kids and parents alike. The park’s signature Wild Woody go-kart track is a multi-level adventure that’s a must-try for thrill-seekers. Whether you’re racing around the track or enjoying classic family-friendly games, The Track is a great place to create unforgettable spring break memories.

8. Discover Historic Fort Morgan:

History-loving families will appreciate a visit to Fort Morgan, a historic site located at the entrance of Mobile Bay. This well-preserved fort played a significant role in the Civil War and offers visitors a glimpse into Alabama’s past. Families can explore the fort’s tunnels, climb its walls, and learn about its history through interactive exhibits. The site also features beautiful coastal views and is a great spot for a picnic or a leisurely walk.

Orange Beach and Gulf Shores activities are plentiful and  packed with family-friendly activities that make for an unforgettable spring break. Whether you’re relaxing on the beach, spotting dolphins, exploring nature, or enjoying fun attractions, there’s something for everyone. If you’re planning a trip to Florida’s Forgotten C If you’re planning a trip to Florida’s Forgotten Coast, save this one. 🌊 #RentingTheCoastPartner

We stayed at Singing Waves in Cape San Blas, and it was everything we wanted in a beach getaway: beautiful views, plenty of space, and the kind of place that makes you slow down and actually enjoy vacation.

What really stood out, though, was Renting the Coast. They’re a locally owned, family run company that manages vacation homes throughout Cape San Blas, Port St. Joe, Mexico Beach, and the surrounding Forgotten Coast communities.

Instead of managing hundreds of properties, they intentionally keep their inventory smaller so they can provide a more personal experience for both guests and homeowners. They’re known for being accessible, responsive, and focused on making sure every stay goes smoothly.

If Cape San Blas has been on your travel list, Singing Waves is absolutely worth checking out, and so is Renting the Coast’s collection of homes along Florida’s most underrated stretch of coastline. ☀️

I didn’t realize how much mental space hair removal was taking up until it just… wasn’t anymore. Between games, trips, and everything in between, having something I can do at home in minutes has been a total game changer. The app-guided treatments keep me consistent without having to think about it, and I’m already noticing smoother skin that actually lasts. And yes — the full-body, 10-minute-at-home situation still feels a little unreal.

If you’ve been on the fence, Prime Day (June 14–27) is definitely the moment to check it out with $120 off. #BraunSmartIPL

We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we just needed a break from the noise.
What we found in Florida was something better than that. #ad

Our first stop in Auburndale was all about slowing down in the best way. We stayed in a cozy tiny home at Camp Margaritaville (you can also stay in an RV!). We enjoyed coffee on the porch, our daughter loved the pool and waterslide (there is even a splash zone for the littles!), and at night we slowed things down with s’mores instead of screens. It felt like nature + comfort + family time all finally in the same place. They have so many other amenities like mini golf, golf cart rentals, pickleball, a playground, cornhole, and more. Nearby, we explored the Florida Children’s Museum and had incredible food and drinks at Smith’s American Tavern and Black & Brew Coffee.

Then, we headed over to Fort Myers to experience a completely different side of the state. Shelling walks at sunrise, beach volleyball, pool cabanas, and the kind of Gulf sunsets that make everyone go quiet for a minute. Direct beach access at the Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers made it effortless to go from “let’s check it out” to toes in the sand in minutes. There were several restaurants on property, so we never even got in our car. That plus live music, fire pits, the spa, and lawn games made it easy to want to stay put and relax.

What stood out most wasn’t just the scenery… it was how easy it was to actually be together here. No rushing or overplanning. That’s the true Floridays feeling for me. Laid-back, a little unexpected, and exactly what we didn’t know we needed. 🌴☀️
