20 Years of the Mickey Marathon

May 21, 2012 | Disney, running, Uncategorized

Mornin’ yall! I had a great weekend with my family which was JUST what I needed to help me get over my funk. I still don’t feel out of the woods as far as fitness and my funk go, but my overall attitude is much much better. Amazing what some time with family and a snowball on a hot day can do for you!

Ok, so you know that I am planning to run goofy this year, but did you know that this year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Disney Marathon? Since Disney goes all out for every special occasion imaginable, you can bet they have some special things planned for the anniversary celebration! For starters, runners will get a special 20th anniversary mickey medal for completing the marathon! Also, there is a new post race party at Downtown Disney, and, in honor of this year, the full marathon course has been altered for even more fun (with a special surprise at mile 20!)

“Runners to Race Around the “High Banks’’ and “Bases’’ As Part of 20thAnniversary Walt Disney World Marathon Course”

Say wwwhhaattt?

Oh yes my friends, we will be running through the speedway and around the bases at the Wide World of Sports complex/baseball stadium! How fun is that? Not only does it sound fun, but it will break up the miles between a couple of the parks and there won’t be as long of a “lonely stretch” if you know what I mean. I can’t wait to see what the mile 20 surprise is, all I know is I will have my camera!

Need more incentive?

“In addition to the 26.2-mile marathon, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna (Jan. 10-13) will feature events for the entire family such as Kids’ Races throughout the weekend, including the Mickey Mile, a Family Fun Run 5K on Friday, the Half Marathon on Saturday and the Marathon on Sunday.  There is also Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge which involves running the Half Marathon and the full Marathon – 39.3 miles!  The Health and Fitness Expo runs throughout the weekend at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and features the latest in running technology and fashion, as well as renowned running experts like Jeff Galloway, the official training consultant for runDisney.”

It’s no secret I am a HUGE runDisney fan, completing the half marathon, full marathon, wine and dine half, Princess half, royal family 5k, Halloween 5k, and castaway 5k. WHEW! I highly recommended running this race, or any runDisney race!

If you have questions please contact me, I have a room block open at a discounted rate for those wanting to stay on property! heather@travelwiththemagic.com

I wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to do any Disney race, but I think if I went down there for one it would probably be the marathon :). It would definitely be an entertaining 26.2 miles and probably the only way I’d do a full. Good luck with training for the Goofy challenge!

So far I have only run the Princess 5k and the Wine and Dine 5k. Out of the two I really loved the Princess 5k and will NEVER do a 5k in the Animal Kingdom again. It just wasn’t as much fun….there wasn’t enough to look at…overall I really did not enjoy the Wine and Dine 5k. I am training for the Wine and Dine Half right now. Did you know that the first Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is the night before the Wine and Dine Half? I can’t wait to see all the Christmas Decorations! Good luck training for the Goofy. My husband is training to run the Disney Marathon so I will be there cheering you both on!

As an Ohioan (therefore pretty far from Disney) who is fairly new to (but in love with!) marathoning, I desperately want to “go goofy”, but it will take some planning and saving up, I think.

I’m soooo excited! I’ve ran the Princess Half twice but never ran the Marathon Weekend races. I signed up for the full…it will be my second full and I’m looking forward to just running it for fun and the pictures lol! I have a few friends that are running it and it will be their first full so we plan to have a great time! And then next year (2014) I wanna run Goofy! I’ll see how your experience goes first! 😉

We take her on these trips and cruises hoping she’ll soak in the adventure, the beauty, and maybe even the food from places different from where we live… but to her, nothing beats a corn dog and mac & cheese. 🧀

And honestly, that’s the best reminder for us, that joy doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to be yours. 🛳✨

YES I was dancing, eating mac and cheese from the YES I was dancing, eating mac and cheese from the kids menu, and singing “Let it Go” with a butter knife while wearing Mickey ears on our Disney cruise. 🚢

When I was 12, I was worried a lot… worried about failing, scared of what people would think of me, and of not fitting in or being “cool”.
I turned 40 this year and have been spending time trying to figure out exactly who I really am with all expectations stripped away. I don’t love the term “finding yourself”, but here I feel like it fits. ✨

Maybe finding yourself means going back to being 12.… and being myself without being scared. Heather at 12 would never believe this version of me… but I think she’d be proud. 💛✨

Emma Kate turned 11 last month during our sailing and we did so many birthday things! She got a ton of “happy birthday’s” from crew and guests to make it extra special. ✨

This is 11. ✨🎉 Not sure how this happened, b This is 11. ✨🎉

Not sure how this happened, but time snuck up on me and now I have an 11 year old. 🥹
We couldn’t think of a more fun place to celebrate that on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas.

She started the day with presents, then hours and hours in the sun on the island, followed by cake and singing at dinner, the tween club, and fireworks at sea! (They were for pirate night but we said they were birthday fireworks!)

Happy birthday to the most fierce, kind, competitive, loyal, funny, and beautiful little girl I know. 🩷 Never change who you are and stop growing up so fast! So. Blessed to have the best title there is, Emma Kate’s mom. 💖
