Vote for Your Park

June 27, 2012 | family, fitness

Ok, here is your friendly reminder to vote for your favorite park!!! Remember when I wrote that Coca-Cola’s Live Positively campaign is giving away FOUR grants to lucky parks all across the country? The program is still going on, and your parks need your votes!

It’s so easy to vote. It literally takes about 15 seconds. You just type in the zip code or city/state of your park, click the one you want, and vote! If you really want your park to win, you can vote multiple times, and if you check in via Foursquare through the special link, your vote counts as 100 votes!
Last time, I shared with you that I have been voting for Fort Maurepas State Park in Ocean Springs, MS. This is a favorite meet-up spot for me to run, and then a great spot after that to cool off, eat a picnic lunch, or get in some extra exercise with my family. I know this park can be even BETTER, though, and I’m sure you feel the same way about your park.

So, what can you do besides vote? Become an advocate for your park! Use the Facebook and Twitter badges on the site to get people talking on your social media outlets. Go to the link provided and click on “campaign for your park.” On that tab you will find resources you can use to get your park noticed and voted for.
There is even a park flyer, brochure, and tips to get involved. They include:
Start Online
Vote at LivePositively.com/parks from now until July 15, 2012. After you vote, share with your social network by simply clicking the Facebook or Twitter icon. Set up a Facebook page to spread the word and rally everyone around your park. Share regular status updates on how your park is ranking on the leader board.

Gather Together at the Park
Get active in the park. Bike, run, rollerblade or play games with your friends and family. And while you’re there, encourage everyone to vote! Each Foursquare check-in from the park earns your favorite 100 more votes.

Get Out the Vote!
Use the toolkit found on LivePositively.com/parks to help organize your community and
empower others to get involved. Send emails, letters and tweets to community leaders, park groups, local celebrities and more telling them about the campaign and why your park is so special. Print out the flyer found in the toolkit and post it all over your park. Ask park-goers to use their smartphones to cast a vote on the spot!
Don’t forget:
The park with the most votes will win a $100,000 recreation grant from the Coca-Cola
Live Positively initiative and the coveted title of “America’s Favorite Park.” What’s even better is that more than one park will win! Second- and third-place parks will receive $50,000 and $25,000 grants, respectively, and one lucky park will be chosen, at random, from the remaining top 25 spots on the leader board to win a $15,000 grant.
QOTD: What is your favorite thing to do at the park?
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Only legal residents of the 50 U.S. (and D.C.) who are at least 13 years old and reside within the U.S. at the time of participation are eligible to vote for a Park. Participate on behalf of a Park by: July 15, 2012. The 3 most popular Parks will be offered a grant and there will be 1 Wild Card drawing at the end of the Contest to award an additional grant. To participate, for Official Rules, and complete details including grant descriptions, visit www.LivePositively.com/parks. Void where prohibited.

Actually, I am promoting live positively, which is about making a positive difference in your life and community. The America is your park program is all about making parks better so families can go out and be healthy together, and move more and be more fit. I would love to know what is not healthy about that. Not to mention, I will tell you any day that yes, Coke is something I occasionally enjoy as a treat. I see nothing wrong with having a coke, or a piece of cake, or ice cream occasionally. It’s people such as yourself that critique every little thing a health and fitness blogger does that makes ME sad. Please remember I am human just like you and no I don’t eat healthy every second of the day. I will always choose to support family, community, and giving back to your community to make a park better so children have a fun and safe place to play, be active, and healthy! You of course are entitled to your opinion but please don’t make it out like I am some horrible person for promoting a GOOD program. Thanks!

I dont have a favorite park…but love this program and promoting a healthy lifestyle and improving communities…so many need improving!
and while I gave up all soda years ago you will undoubtedly find me munching on peanutbutter cups and cake, other random not 100% healthy items but so what! Life’s about being healthy, positive, active and ENJOYING!
and you ROCK for promoting this and for EVERYTHING you do! You know even my teen (who ignores what I say and blog about) ‘knows’ you, your furbabies and hubby and loves your house and covets cruises/trips to disney because of YOU! so stay positive and keep doing what you do!!!! much admiration and luv!

I just voted for my favorite park! I hate that we have very few nice parks around here. Whenever I talk about the area I grew up in, I ALWAYS mention the awesome park system. I have so many great memories of playing on the playgrounds, having picnics, and running.

While I agree with the fact that sodas are generally unhealthy, I LOVE the Live Positively idea. Your post brings attention to a great program that despite it’s sponsor is well intentioned. McDonalds is gross, but I love the Ronald McDonald house and would support it! So thanks for not shying away from this just because Coke is the sponsor.

I appreciate you voicing your opinion with class and a constructive attitude. Good point about the ronald McDOnald house etc!

I love running in the park! I also go to any of the parks near my job during my lunchbreak to take a walk, read, or just sit on a bench and relax. P.S. I loved the way you nandled the first comment. I lead a mostly healthy lifestyle, but I do enjoy the occasional coke, ice cream, piece of cake, etc. Everything in moderation!

I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just o I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just okay.” Like, fine in a pinch… but never something I craved. 👀

But then this little picnic happened—just me, my girl, and a sweet treat we both loved enough to fight over the last bite. 😅

We’ve been trying to be more mindful with food choices lately (especially with summer travel coming up), and I grabbed these So Delicious treats at Kroger kind of on a whim. The new packaging caught my eye, but it was the taste that totally surprised us. Creamy. Indulgent. No weird aftertaste. And no, we’re not fully dairy-free—and we still loved them.

It’s one of those little swaps that doesn’t feel like giving anything up.

And that? That’s a win for both of us. ✨@So_Delicious

🚨 Homeschool decision!! If you have been aroun 🚨 Homeschool decision!!

If you have been around here since Christmas time, then you know we pulled Emma Kate out of her private school after the first semester and put her in a hybrid homeschool for the spring. The main reason being we wanted more absences than the school allowed.

What is a hybrid? In our case, she went to a school all day 3 days a week, and we taught her at home two days a week.

It seemed like the best of both worlds, not having absences count since we were also her teachers, being able to stay home some, sleep in, and travel.

Well, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. For one, the school we sent her to ended up not being what we thought. We were told being absent wouldn’t be a problem, but it became clear very early on her teacher was not a fan and she was not kind or accommodating to Emma Kate. There’s a lot of other reasons we didn’t blown the school I won’t go into. (If you are local and considering hybrid feel free to dm me and I will share my concerns and grievances.)

Teaching your kid is hard. There were lots of tears and frustrations, and she got bored since Bobby and I also work from home/I’m not a stay at hoke mom. We couldn’t just sit with her all day and teach her with our crazy long hours owning two businesses.

It was tough to keep a schedule and while getting to travel a lot was great, she didn’t thrive on not having a routine and struggled with the randomness of everything.

She is also a very social only child who missed her friends and also wants to play sports for her school.

In the end while there were a lot of pros to hybrid homeschool, the cons outweighed them for us so we are returning to her old school in the fall.

Am I glad we did it? Yes! I always would have wondered otherwise and now we know. We will still be pulling her out of school some to travel in the fall, just not as much.

If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments below and I will be happy to answer the best I can! 🩷
