Mother’s Day Weekend Shenanigans

May 13, 2013 | family, holidays

I hope everyone had a fabulous Mother’s Day weekend! We went to my parents house, and my buddy Karen and her husband came on Saturday and stayed the night so we could hang out. I hadn’t seen her since marathon weekend in January so it was great to catch up. Saturday morning, we went to eat brunch at a spot we always go to when they come into town, The original Broken Egg café. I t was pretty crowded, but we had a good time with great food.

After brunch the guys started playing Xbox…and literally didn’t stop until dinner. Karen and I chatted then went to get everyone snow balls! Most people call them “sno cones” but not here in the New Orleans area. You go to a snow ball stand. Just how we were raised! Anyway, they were amazing (I had wedding cake cream, my usual) and we were kind enough to bring them back for the boys.

My dad BBQ’ed for dinner and Karen made the most delicious dessert, ooey gooey toffee cake like at Liberty Tree Tavern in Disney World. It was amazing! Must. get. recipe. Let’s just say I was in sugar overload.

We chatted late in the night and left the boys up…you guessed it, playing Halo! This morning we had breakfast and chatted some more before they had to go back home. It went by too quickly!

We both have on #ClaimYourJourney shirts! Not planned, just great minds. Smile

For Mother’s Day, my mom claimed she wanted a hand written card. Ok then. I busted out the crayons and drew her some stick people and Bobby drew on it as well. She absolutely loved it as you can see from this picture.

We ate lunch outside on the patio and enjoyed the last of the cooler weather, and then headed back home to a very messy might I add, house. I still haven’t finished unpacking from my trip. Oops.

I hope you got to spend some time with your loved ones this weekend like I did. Enjoy your Monday!

QOTD: What did you do for Mother’s Day?

Aren’t homemade cards the best? When I had my kindergarten students make cards for their moms this weekend I made one for mine 🙂
Perhaps you can share the ooey gooey recipe with us?! 🙂

That Toffee cake sounded yum! My mum, sister and I did a charity walk for Mother’s day to help raise money for breast cancer research.

Whoa…snowcones come in flavors other than fruit kind? In my area we only had like raspberry, blueberry and one other flavor. I’ve never heard of wedding cake cream but it sounds really good!

I love hearing about southern foods – so different from what we eat in New England and NYC! (Although snowcones sound kind of like these Italian ices you can get mixed with dairy. They’re called milk ices up here.)

My fiance and I spent the morning with my family for brunch, and we spent the evening with my future mother-in-law, just watching TV and relaxing.

    Hi Heather,
Glad you had a great weekend. Was thinking about you when I heard about what happened at the parade in New Orleans and was wondering if you were there. ( Glad you are safe)
So are these “snowballs” like Rita’s italian Ice?

Mmmm toffee! We went down to Va Beach oceanfront for a group run on the boardwalk (my Sunday Starbuck running crew). My 4 year old was with us and he did a one mile run. It was a lot of fun. No serious run, just goofing around (got my run in on Saturday). Then got bagels and coffee for breakfast before my hubby had to head to the ship to work. It was a great day!

We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we just needed a break from the noise.
What we found in Florida was something better than that. #ad

Our first stop in Auburndale was all about slowing down in the best way. We stayed in a cozy tiny home at Camp Margaritaville (you can also stay in an RV!). We enjoyed coffee on the porch, our daughter loved the pool and waterslide (there is even a splash zone for the littles!), and at night we slowed things down with s’mores instead of screens. It felt like nature + comfort + family time all finally in the same place. They have so many other amenities like mini golf, golf cart rentals, pickleball, a playground, cornhole, and more. Nearby, we explored the Florida Children’s Museum and had incredible food and drinks at Smith’s American Tavern and Black & Brew Coffee.

Then, we headed over to Fort Myers to experience a completely different side of the state. Shelling walks at sunrise, beach volleyball, pool cabanas, and the kind of Gulf sunsets that make everyone go quiet for a minute. Direct beach access at the Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers made it effortless to go from “let’s check it out” to toes in the sand in minutes. There were several restaurants on property, so we never even got in our car. That plus live music, fire pits, the spa, and lawn games made it easy to want to stay put and relax.

What stood out most wasn’t just the scenery… it was how easy it was to actually be together here. No rushing or overplanning. That’s the true Floridays feeling for me. Laid-back, a little unexpected, and exactly what we didn’t know we needed. 🌴☀️

One of our favorite family activities in Pigeon Forge because you can snow tube year-round, rain or shine, without worrying about the weather outside.

My daughter could do the tubing hill over and over, and the indoor snow play area makes it even more fun. Honestly such a good break from the summer heat. Plus, it’s super close to nearby attractions like Dollywood and several mountain coasters.

✨ Meet Minnie before you even enter the restaurant and get photos with her + a photopass photographer.
✨ Food is all you can eat. Minnie waffles, bacon, eggs, pastries, fruit, and more!
✨ Multiple characters visit your table throughout the meal.

This was such a fun way to start a park day and meet several characters without spending part of the day waiting in character lines.

Getting in a walk or run when I can. Actually drinking my water. Sticking to a skincare routine instead of overthinking it. Paying attention to my hair and scalp instead of just throwing it up and moving on. Nothing extreme, just consistency in the basics.

I’ve also been using Mochi Health for personalized skincare and hair support, and it’s made it way easier to stay on track without guessing what my skin or hair needs.

If you want to try it, there’s $40 off your first month through the link in my bio. @joinmochi #joinmochi mochihealth

Dancing Bear Appalachian Bistro took part in Cork to Fork on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, and every bite felt like a love letter to local flavor. From bourbon-glazed pork belly to a warm cinnamon-bourbon bread pudding that honestly didn’t stand a chance at our table… this was one of those meals you remember.

Mountain views, chef-driven dishes, and whiskey worked right into the menu in the best way. 😋
