VOCO St. James New Orleans, a Boutique Hotel

Bobby and I recently got back from a stay in my “stompin’ grounds” as they say. I was born and raised in the New Orleans area, so it’s always fun to go back and visit. We dropped Emma Kate off at sleepaway camp, and headed south. We made a stop in Mississippi to see some of Bobby’s family, and then pointed even further south, across the bayous, and into the crescent city. Despite having grown up in the area, there is so much to see and do! The hotel we stayed in first, the VOCO St. James, was a real treat! Let’s take a closer look at this boutique hotel.

VOCO St. James Location and History

St. James was taken over by VOCO in 2022, and it sits on Magazine street in the CBD near the french quarter. It was very walkable to so many things, without being RIGHT in the center of downtown. The St. James opened in 1833 as a meeting place for local merchants to conduct business and support the neighborhood above Canal Street. In 1859, the building was renovated, and the original St. James hotel opened. I found out that during the Civil War it served as a hospital! Some guests claim to have seen ghosts of soldiers. I’m not sure about all that, but it’s a fun story!

The Room

We were put on the top floor in a king room with a huge balcony! Unfortunately it was a heat index of 100 degrees, so we didn’t get to spend much time out there, but I am sure it’s lovely when it’s NOT the middle of summer. (If you come to NOLA May-September, be prepared for heat and humidity!)

The bathroom was huge and modern, and the king bed was super comfy! We also had a coffee maker, TV, desk/sitting area, etc. All the things! VOCO St. James even called to check on us once we got settled into our room. Such a nice touch.

Common Areas/Dining

As far as common areas, there is a bar/restaurant/lounge off the lobby that serves a yummy breakfast, and also drinks and small plates after 4:00. There is a beautiful sitting area overlooking the street in the front, and an adorable little courtyard pool as well. It was a great spot for photos. It is also connected to the Chophouse next door if you want a more lavish meal.

We truly had a great time and would stay here again! I thought the prices were very reasonable, and there are many room types to choose from at the hotel. Be sure to check out VOCO St. James New Orleans on your next visit to the city.
