Tips for Surviving (and Thriving) as a Travel Ball Mom

Because horrible coffee and bleacher seats are now a lifestyle.

travel ball mom

If you’ve recently found yourself Googling “how to keep my sanity during travel basketball season” — welcome. You’re one of us now. You’re a travel ball mom, which means your weekends no longer belong to you, your trunk is permanently full of gear, and you may or may not have yelled “BOX OUT!” louder than the coach. No judgment here.

Whether you’re a seasoned vet or just starting out, here are some tried-and-true (and slightly humorous) tips to help you survive and thrive in the wild world of travel basketball.

1. Pack Like You’re Going Off-Grid

Sure, it’s just a weekend tournament, but somehow, travel ball requires packing like you’re prepping for a week in the mountains. Snacks? Check. Extra socks? Check. Knee pads, chargers, water bottles, Icy Hot, bandaids, and that lucky sports bra your daughter swears by? Triple check. Bonus tip: always have a portable fan for stuffy gyms, and a blanket — because yes, one gym will be 90 degrees and the next will be freezing.

2. Embrace the Folding Chair Life

Bleachers are not your friend. Especially if you had posters of the Backstreet Boys in your room as a teen. Yes, you. Your back will thank you for following these instructions: Invest in a quality stadium seat or one of those fancy folding chairs with cup holders, back support, and maybe even a footrest if you’re feeling extra. You’ll be sitting more hours than you care to count. Comfort is key.

3. Hotel Breakfasts Are a Gamble

Some hotels serve a decent spread. Others? You’re left with questionable eggs and a waffle maker that’s seen better days. Always pack backup breakfast bars and bribe your kid with Starbucks if they hustle in the morning. It’s the unofficial currency of travel sports.

4. Make Peace with the Smell

Let’s talk laundry. Specifically, the post-tournament gym sock stench that haunts your car. Febreze will only take you so far. A mesh laundry bag is your best friend — toss sweaty gear in it right after the game to at least contain the horror. And for the love of all that is holy, wash that uniform before Monday morning. With extra detergent.

5. Your Weekend Wardrobe Is Now “Sporty Chic”

Think comfy sneakers, cute joggers, and a hat to hide the exhaustion. Don’t forget the dry shampoo because you will be too tired after day one to even lift your arms above your head to wash your hair. Bonus points for team colors and a “Basketball Mom” sweatshirt. You’re here to support, but that doesn’t mean you can’t serve looks from the bleachers.

6. You’re Now a Referee (In Your Head)

You may not have the whistle or the striped shirt, but in your mind? You saw that foul. You called that travel. You definitely knew that was a double dribble before the ref did. It’s okay — every travel mom becomes a part-time official from the bleachers. Just remember: yelling “THREE SECONDS!” too loudly might get you a few side-eyes… or a knowing nod from the mom beside you doing the same thing.

7. Snacks = Peace

Always bring snacks. For you, your kid, and sometimes for other kids who forgot theirs. A well-fed bench is a happy bench. You can never have enough. If you think you are done packing, double it. Pro tip: hide your “mom snacks” (aka the good stuff like peanut M&Ms or trail mix with extra chocolate) from your child unless you want them devoured before warmups.

8. Make Mom Friends

You’re going to be spending a lot of time with other parents. Find your people. The ones who will save you a seat, text you the game time or court number, or split a giant Diet Coke from the concession stand with you. Travel ball friendships are real — forged in sweat, Starbucks runs, and endless fourth quarters.

9. Document the Memories

Yes, take photos. Film those buzzer beaters. Snap away during those hard fought jump balls. You will want to remember them one day, or look back year after year to see how far they have come.  These weekends, as exhausting as they are, go by fast. And someday you’ll miss them… maybe.

10. Celebrate the Small Wins

Whether your kid scores 10 points or finally sets a proper screen without moving, cheer them on. Let them see your pride — not just in what they do, but in who they are becoming through the sport: resilient, team-oriented, mentally tough, strong, and maybe a little sassy. It’s easy to get caught up in stats, but always be there to remind your player that the game is so much more than numbers.

Being a travel ball mom isn’t for the faint of heart. But if you can master the art of packing, bleacher sitting, and shouting encouragement while clutching an iced latte, you’re basically a superhero. Cape optional — but highly encouraged. It may seem overwhelming right now, but one day you will miss doing endless french braid pigtails at 6:00 in the morning, popping antacids at all the championship games, losing your voice every weekend, and getting the biggest sweatiest hugs at the end of it all. Soak it all in mom. These are the good ‘ole days.

I didn’t realize how much mental space hair removal was taking up until it just… wasn’t anymore. Between games, trips, and everything in between, having something I can do at home in minutes has been a total game changer. The app-guided treatments keep me consistent without having to think about it, and I’m already noticing smoother skin that actually lasts. And yes — the full-body, 10-minute-at-home situation still feels a little unreal.

If you’ve been on the fence, Prime Day (June 14–27) is definitely the moment to check it out with $120 off. #BraunSmartIPL

We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we We didn’t set out looking for a “perfect” trip… we just needed a break from the noise.
What we found in Florida was something better than that. #ad

Our first stop in Auburndale was all about slowing down in the best way. We stayed in a cozy tiny home at Camp Margaritaville (you can also stay in an RV!). We enjoyed coffee on the porch, our daughter loved the pool and waterslide (there is even a splash zone for the littles!), and at night we slowed things down with s’mores instead of screens. It felt like nature + comfort + family time all finally in the same place. They have so many other amenities like mini golf, golf cart rentals, pickleball, a playground, cornhole, and more. Nearby, we explored the Florida Children’s Museum and had incredible food and drinks at Smith’s American Tavern and Black & Brew Coffee.

Then, we headed over to Fort Myers to experience a completely different side of the state. Shelling walks at sunrise, beach volleyball, pool cabanas, and the kind of Gulf sunsets that make everyone go quiet for a minute. Direct beach access at the Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers made it effortless to go from “let’s check it out” to toes in the sand in minutes. There were several restaurants on property, so we never even got in our car. That plus live music, fire pits, the spa, and lawn games made it easy to want to stay put and relax.

What stood out most wasn’t just the scenery… it was how easy it was to actually be together here. No rushing or overplanning. That’s the true Floridays feeling for me. Laid-back, a little unexpected, and exactly what we didn’t know we needed. 🌴☀️

When the Smoky Mountain heat gets unbearable, we h When the Smoky Mountain heat gets unbearable, we head to Pigeon Forge Snow. ❄️ #sponsored

One of our favorite family activities in Pigeon Forge because you can snow tube year-round, rain or shine, without worrying about the weather outside.

My daughter could do the tubing hill over and over, and the indoor snow play area makes it even more fun. Honestly such a good break from the summer heat. Plus, it’s super close to nearby attractions like Dollywood and several mountain coasters.
