Hello friends! It’s so YUCKY here. Rain and ice. I am really nervous about driving back to Mississippi in it. I hope it’s gone in a couple hours! Ok, so I finally got around to doing my accent vlog. I think I sound PERFECTLY normal. What do you think?
here we go….
(PS please ignore the amount of times I said um. I had NO idea I was doing it, and must stop! Didn’t feel like reshooting the video though. I am actually a decent public speaker so I am not sure what the deal was!)
So, any words I say funny? Is that how you expected me to sound? I need feedback people! I am nervous I am going to lose followers because I sound like a nerd. 🙂
Have a great day and stay safe out there. I will be blogging from Mississippi tomorrow!
Jennifer says
You sound normal to me 🙂 I just recently found your blog! I was born in Meridian, MS but moved to AZ when I was 10 (12 years ago). I don’t have much of an accent now but some words I do! I still say buggy and my husband is like uhhh what is that? Also when I first moved here I would always say, I’m fixin to go to the store” and my friends could not understand. They always asked, what are you fixing????” Unfortunately sometimes I am forced to say soda here so people know what I’m talking about and it makes me cringe for some reason! I really hate the word soda haha.
Heather says
oh I say fixin to! and “yo mom and dem” but I think that may be a new orleans thing?
Kristin says
Love your accent! It was nice to see you speak and move around as opposed to only photos! I like hearing other accents beacuse I have a Boston accent where we have completely taken out the letter “R” from anything we say and we have fun words for describing things like “wicked”. For instance…”I am wicked ti-yid of gettin up early when it is still dahk out to get my run in, only to have to spend another hou-ah shoveling my driveway that is full of snow so I can get my cah outah the yahd.”
Hee hee.
Heather says
see to me that is SO WEIRD! I just dont see how a letter can be taken out of the English language entirely! So foreign to me! Cracks me up.
Michelle says
You have a little bit of an accent to be, but I’m from Indiana and live in Michigan.
Coming from IN to live in MI people always said I had an accept – especially when I said words like fire and tire.
So how do you say washer? My mom and dad always say WARsher, but I say WASHer.
Also whenever I am going to use the vacuum I always so I’m going to sweep and my husband hates it. He says that I should say that I am vacuuming, and that sweeping is for if you’re using a broom.
Heather says
no i def say WASher. you say sweep for vacuum? LOL! never heard that before. To me they are two different things.
Crystal says
Ok, I was only able to watch a part of it, but I didn’t need to watch it to tell you that yes, my dear, you definitely have an accent. Lol. I’ll watch the whole thing later on the computer not my phone.
Heather says
ok mrs valley girl!!! lol! lets see yours! hehe.
Karen says
You don’t sound like a nerd…but I talk to you all the time! Hehehe :0)
I love pah-can instead of pee-can! LOL
Karen says
Rolling IS fun times, I completely agree! LOL
Heather says
I havent rolled in awhile!
Heather says
LOL! we are both normal
Karen says
“I want a coke!”
“What kind of coke?”
“A SPRITE, please!”
Hahahahah!
Heather says
EXACTLY!
Karen says
Bobby saying highschool is funny! :0) And I love Cajun accents! Hehe!
I should have listened to this whole thing before I started commenting! Haha sorry about that!
At the end of the video, Jason said “Oh was that HEATHER?!” Aaahaha yes nerd who do you think I was listening to?! LOL
Heather says
LOL! did he not think it sounded like me?
Andrea @ Run, Eat, Date, Sleep says
Awww you have such a cute accent!
Heather says
haha thanks!
Eliz@The Sweet Life says
I think it’s so funny that we all think we sound “normal” and yet others think we sound different!! Thanks for the glimpse into your life!
Heather says
I know! thanks for reading.
Morgan @ Becoming Rooks says
The devil is beating his wife – WHAT? Oh my gosh I am laughing so much. I’ve never heard that before!! You definitely have an accent to me but it’s very soft and pretty. I love “southern” accents, though. I have flat yankee vowels 🙂 Oh and the coke explanation had me laughing, too!
Karen says
I laughed so hard when she said that cause we use that phrase, too! Hahaha! I’ve watched a few Accent Vlogs and when they said their answer to that question, I thought “Hmmm…my answer is MUCH different!” and I wondered if Heather would say it! LOL
Heather says
BAHAHA. yeah a lot of people are shocked by that one. I NEVER realized it was a southern thing!
Heather says
HEHE. I seriosuly never realized that was a southern thing until doing this video!
The coke thing is def true too. When I used to work the concession stand at the boys bball games in HS, I would say “what would yo like to drink” and they would say “a coke” and I say “what kind?” and they would say “dr. pepper” LOL!
Rachel says
I think you sound normal, just a different dialect.. but I am from the South, so every Southerner sounds normal to me. 🙂
Heather says
thats right!
Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans says
Love it! You sound how I expected you to sound. I definitely expected y’all!!
Now, I must asked why its New Or-lins if the spelling is Or-Leans?? I say Leans but I read and pronounce most things phonetically I guess. (People comment that I ennunciate a lot!)
Heather says
well, we speak a little something down here called ebonics….HAHA! I know. its weird. but its true. I get so annoyed watching football /saints games and the announcers say “the new or-LE-ANS saints. AAAHH!
Becky says
I love the twang! My accent is pretty much the polar opposite of Southern. I’m so tempted to do the accent vlog, but I can’t imagine what I’d sound like!
Heather says
DO IT!
Megan says
I love your accent! I’ve always wanted a southern accent (or an Australian one!) I’m working on my accent vlog – hopefully it’ll be up this weekend!
I also LOVE that you got to do a photo shoot – even if it was cold! SO exciting!
Heather says
thanks so much! Australian accents are so cool!
Jen says
Haha! “The devil is beating his wife?” I have never heard of that saying!
You sounded pretty much exactly how I expected you to the first time we talked. But I’ve been down South since Fall 2000 so southern accents fail to shock me anymore.
And I am always WAY more nervous talking into a camera than an actual audience. No clue why. It’s one of my main reasons I stopped pursuing broadcast journalism and switched to writing!
Heather says
ask ANYONE from down here and thats what they will (should) say. I asked Bobby at dinner, and he said it correctly, too lol!
I didnt really feel that nervous, so I dont know what the deal was!
Claire says
You definitely sound normal, though I had never hear of some of the things you said. “Rolling”, we call TPing up here in the NW (I live in Seattle, born and raised). I’ve never heard “the devil is beating his wife thing”, we are crazy PC here in Seattle, so that kind of thing would probably not go over well! Your accent is very slight, and pleasant. I can never figure out if I have an accent, most of us in the NW think we don’t have one, which I realize is impossible.
Heather says
LOL! ya…def not concerned with being PC here in the south. I actually am pretty anti PC just because it annoys me that you can’t say what you think without hurting someones feelings. But then again, I am old fashioned like that. 🙂
I think everyone thinks they don’t have an accent!
Brittany says
You say Caramel, data, and pecans the right wayyy! YAY 🙂
Heather says
woot!
Kayla says
You sound like I would expect a southerner to sound, however I have talked to you too. Most people think I am from the north, when I am not. I think it is funny that ya’ll call it rolling and so does Brian, however I call it wrapping. I always say that God is playing baseball or what you said about the devil beating his wife. Too funny though!
Heather says
wrapping? thats one I have never heard before. Reminds me of Christmas presents!
Heather I. says
A buggy, that is so cute! Southern accents are my favorite and yours is just right. Sometimes I want to move to the South just so my little girl can talk like y’all 🙂 These accent vlogs are so fun, I’m working on posting one soon!
Heather says
haha! little girls that talk southern are so stinkin cute
Zaneta says
I LOVED this post! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I dont think you sound like a nerd! lol
Heather says
haha thank you!
claire says
Ok…I’m so glad that you say “the devil is beating his wife.” Everyone else was saying “sun shower” and I had NEVER heard that! As to high school…unfortunately, that’s how I say it, too. I think it’d be interesting to hear different people say “Mississippi.” 🙂
Heather says
NEVER heard sun shower until watching these vlogs!
Lily's Health Pad says
Well, I live in SC, so you sound absolutely normal to me. Although, there’s no doubting you have a Southern accent!
Heather says
see? we are normal!
heidi @ runaroundaroo says
You sound perfectly adorable.
And I’m not trying to be creepy either – there is something about the southern accent that just sounds adorable to me! I talk to people from LA, MS and AL every day…I always imagine them to be quite adorable. You fit the book! 😉
Heather says
LOL thanks. I love being from the south.
Bethany says
hmm, apparently my speakers are not working so i’ll have to listen later, but I can see an accent just by reading your lips for the 10 seconds i watched before realizing my speakers didn’t work. Have you ever heard the Boston accent (like the hardcore born and raised in Boston)? I hate it, it sounds so dumb, sorry Boston people. I only say a few words without my R’s, like mirrah, othawise etc. I’ll listen later. have a nice weekend
Heather says
you can tell without hearing me? awesome! too funny.
Kayla says
yeah, wrapping is what I always have called it. Brian and Karen always make fun of me for saying it. But it makes sense in my mind, you are wrapping the trees/house/bushes up in toilet paper. haha
Heather says
is that what all your friends called it too? is it a texas thing?
Lizzy says
Love love your southern cajun accent!! Amazing… especially bugy and coke!! Fabulous! I’m from MA but don’t have a Boston accent but my hubby does!!!
Heather says
buggy and coke is where it’s at! I never really think/thought of it as weird.
Khourt says
Everything sounded just like here in Arkansas 🙂 My mum says the “wersher” for “washer” and I hate it! Some of the words here in the South drive me nuts “rechon” “yonder”.. *sigh*
That was a fun video! I guess I havent seen any of the others that people are talking about.
Heather says
haha too funny!
a lot of people are doing them, try googling it!
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
You sound a lot how I thought you would! 🙂 I love this! 🙂
Heather says
haha I hope that’s a good thing!
Toni says
I love this blog. That was really cool with the different words. I think the thing that cracked me up the most was the buggy for shopping. We should do this on the boards!
Heather says
haha we should thats a good idea!
Danica says
I loved listening to your video, it was nice to hear what you sound like verses just seeing pictures. I loved your accent, I work with a guy who is from Lousiana and he has a thick Cajun accent too. Hope you have a great weekend and I love reading your blog.
Heather says
thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it. Tell the guy you work with from LA that he is not crazy for talking that way haha!
Lindsay Manguno Allange says
Heather…. I swear… you are the cutest thing EVER! :0) This cracked me up. And just so you know…. you acquired a country accent when you got married, or at least at some point after high school. ;0) It’s cute. And the word list cracked me up. What is that all about? What are you reading from? You answered all those questions and said all the words exactly like I would have. So…. no…. you don’t sound weird at all! Totally normal to this fellow country cajun. :0) See…… I’m not a lurkey lurker anymore.
Heather says
hey! haha yeah i didn’t think i talked like this in HS. My mom said it started in College, she said I would come home on teh weekends and they would make fun of certain words I would say. It didnt help things when I married a MS boy!
Its the accent vlog, its going around the blog world, or at least the healthy living blog world. There is the list of words and the questions, its bee fun to watch my favorite bloggers say the words!
thanks so much for saying hi!
Bethany says
ok, got my speakers working agian! What a fun post, where did you get this idea from? I enjoyed listening to you and learned a few new words! Living in MA my whole life, of course I could hear a definite accent, but the thing i noticed even more was the rate of speech! I don’t want to say that you talk really slow, bc that’s not nice, but I think perhaps New Englanders talk really fast! 🙂 Enjoy your weekend and have a good 8 miler today!
Heather says
hi! its something going around the blog world! check out caitlins at healthy tipping point, meghanns at meals and miles, Bobbu’s at n her shoes…several have done it, its fun!
Actually, if you asked my friends I can talk pretty fast. It depends on who I am with. Also, my communications teacher taught me well. When I am speaking in public I talk slow for processing purposes. I was a teacher for 2 years, and you have to talk slow when you talk to 5th graders lol!
Kayla says
A lot of people around here call it wrapping. I have always called it that, so I had to have heard it around here somewhere. But then again, I come from a very small town, unlike where Brian and Karen are from. I agree with you completely about when you talk to any kids. You have to talk fairly slow whenever you teach them, or else they won’t understand it, but I tend to talk very fast too, so I have to slow down when I teach too. haha
