Hello friends! It’s so YUCKY here. Rain and ice. I am really nervous about driving back to Mississippi in it. I hope it’s gone in a couple hours! Ok, so I finally got around to doing my accent vlog. I think I sound PERFECTLY normal. What do you think?

(PS please ignore the amount of times I said um. I had NO idea I was doing it, and must stop! Didn’t feel like reshooting the video though. I am actually a decent public speaker so I am not sure what the deal was!)
So, any words I say funny? Is that how you expected me to sound? I need feedback people! I am nervous I am going to lose followers because I sound like a nerd. 🙂

You sound normal to me 🙂 I just recently found your blog! I was born in Meridian, MS but moved to AZ when I was 10 (12 years ago). I don’t have much of an accent now but some words I do! I still say buggy and my husband is like uhhh what is that? Also when I first moved here I would always say, I’m fixin to go to the store” and my friends could not understand. They always asked, what are you fixing????” Unfortunately sometimes I am forced to say soda here so people know what I’m talking about and it makes me cringe for some reason! I really hate the word soda haha.
oh I say fixin to! and “yo mom and dem” but I think that may be a new orleans thing?
Love your accent! It was nice to see you speak and move around as opposed to only photos! I like hearing other accents beacuse I have a Boston accent where we have completely taken out the letter “R” from anything we say and we have fun words for describing things like “wicked”. For instance…”I am wicked ti-yid of gettin up early when it is still dahk out to get my run in, only to have to spend another hou-ah shoveling my driveway that is full of snow so I can get my cah outah the yahd.”

see to me that is SO WEIRD! I just dont see how a letter can be taken out of the English language entirely! So foreign to me! Cracks me up.
You have a little bit of an accent to be, but I’m from Indiana and live in Michigan.
Coming from IN to live in MI people always said I had an accept – especially when I said words like fire and tire.
So how do you say washer? My mom and dad always say WARsher, but I say WASHer.
Also whenever I am going to use the vacuum I always so I’m going to sweep and my husband hates it. He says that I should say that I am vacuuming, and that sweeping is for if you’re using a broom.
no i def say WASher. you say sweep for vacuum? LOL! never heard that before. To me they are two different things.
Ok, I was only able to watch a part of it, but I didn’t need to watch it to tell you that yes, my dear, you definitely have an accent. Lol. I’ll watch the whole thing later on the computer not my phone.

The devil is beating his wife – WHAT? Oh my gosh I am laughing so much. I’ve never heard that before!! You definitely have an accent to me but it’s very soft and pretty. I love “southern” accents, though. I have flat yankee vowels 🙂 Oh and the coke explanation had me laughing, too!
I laughed so hard when she said that cause we use that phrase, too! Hahaha! I’ve watched a few Accent Vlogs and when they said their answer to that question, I thought “Hmmm…my answer is MUCH different!” and I wondered if Heather would say it! LOL

The coke thing is def true too. When I used to work the concession stand at the boys bball games in HS, I would say “what would yo like to drink” and they would say “a coke” and I say “what kind?” and they would say “dr. pepper” LOL!
I think you sound normal, just a different dialect.. but I am from the South, so every Southerner sounds normal to me. 🙂

well, we speak a little something down here called ebonics….HAHA! I know. its weird. but its true. I get so annoyed watching football /saints games and the announcers say “the new or-LE-ANS saints. AAAHH!
I love the twang! My accent is pretty much the polar opposite of Southern. I’m so tempted to do the accent vlog, but I can’t imagine what I’d sound like!

You sounded pretty much exactly how I expected you to the first time we talked. But I’ve been down South since Fall 2000 so southern accents fail to shock me anymore.
And I am always WAY more nervous talking into a camera than an actual audience. No clue why. It’s one of my main reasons I stopped pursuing broadcast journalism and switched to writing!
ask ANYONE from down here and thats what they will (should) say. I asked Bobby at dinner, and he said it correctly, too lol!

You definitely sound normal, though I had never hear of some of the things you said. “Rolling”, we call TPing up here in the NW (I live in Seattle, born and raised). I’ve never heard “the devil is beating his wife thing”, we are crazy PC here in Seattle, so that kind of thing would probably not go over well! Your accent is very slight, and pleasant. I can never figure out if I have an accent, most of us in the NW think we don’t have one, which I realize is impossible.
LOL! ya…def not concerned with being PC here in the south. I actually am pretty anti PC just because it annoys me that you can’t say what you think without hurting someones feelings. But then again, I am old fashioned like that. 🙂

You sound like I would expect a southerner to sound, however I have talked to you too. Most people think I am from the north, when I am not. I think it is funny that ya’ll call it rolling and so does Brian, however I call it wrapping. I always say that God is playing baseball or what you said about the devil beating his wife. Too funny though!

Ok…I’m so glad that you say “the devil is beating his wife.” Everyone else was saying “sun shower” and I had NEVER heard that! As to high school…unfortunately, that’s how I say it, too. I think it’d be interesting to hear different people say “Mississippi.” 🙂

hmm, apparently my speakers are not working so i’ll have to listen later, but I can see an accent just by reading your lips for the 10 seconds i watched before realizing my speakers didn’t work. Have you ever heard the Boston accent (like the hardcore born and raised in Boston)? I hate it, it sounds so dumb, sorry Boston people. yeah, wrapping is what I always have called it. Brian and Karen always make fun of me for saying it. But it makes sense in my mind, you are wrapping the trees/house/bushes up in toilet paper. haha

Everything sounded just like here in Arkansas 🙂 My mum says the “wersher” for “washer” and I hate it! Some of the words here in the South drive me nuts “rechon” “yonder”.. *sigh*

And just so you know…. you acquired a country accent when you got married, or at least at some point after high school. ;0) It’s cute. And the word list cracked me up. What is that all about? hey! haha yeah i didn’t think i talked like this in HS. My mom said it started in College, she said I would come home on teh weekends and they would make fun of certain words I would say. It didnt help things when I married a MS boy!

ok, got my speakers working agian! What a fun post, where did you get this idea from? I enjoyed listening to you and learned a few new words! Living in MA my whole life, of course I could hear a definite accent, but the thing i noticed even more was the rate of speech! I don’t want to say that you talk really slow, bc that’s not nice, but I think perhaps New Englanders talk really fast! 🙂 Enjoy your weekend and have a good 8 miler today!

Actually, if you asked my friends I can talk pretty fast. It depends on who I am with. Also, my communications teacher taught me well. When I am speaking in public I talk slow for processing purposes. I was a teacher for 2 years, and you have to talk slow when you talk to 5th graders lol!
A lot of people around here call it wrapping. I have always called it that, so I had to have heard it around here somewhere. But then again, I come from a very small town, unlike where Brian and Karen are from. I agree with you completely about when you talk to any kids. You have to talk fairly slow whenever you teach them, or else they won’t understand it, but I tend to talk very fast too, so I have to slow down when I teach too. haha
