Castaway Cay 5k

June 23, 2010 | Uncategorized

Ok So I thought while I formulate my thoughts on what to share about my trip I would go ahead and share with you the 2 times I actually worked out. (We also walked a lot too!) I ran on the ship on our sea day on the treadmill. The fitness center has windows all across the front looking out and I was worried I would fall off the treadmill so I got on one that was a row back and down and I really couldn’t see out. Also, they have these awesome tv screens right in front of your face on every treadmill so i watched South Africa play in the world cup. I had two people come up and ask me the score lol! I ran 3 miles. It felt great but at the same time I felt so BLEH so I took it slow.
The second time I ran was on Castaway Cay, Disney’s AMAZING private island. Every Disney cruise to the Bahamas/Caribbean stops here for a day. We were on a special cruise called a double dip and we got to go twice, so they ran the 5k twice. We decided to only do it on the 2nd stop and relax the first time.
Honestly, I would have been fine NOT doing it (Hello, vacation!) but Bobby really wanted to do it so I agreed. Well, let me tell you…something about the SUN in the bahamas….it seems so much stronger and hotter! Now, I live in Mississippi, so I am used to running in 95 degree weather and 100% humidity, BUT, this was different.
We met at the gangway right off the ship at 8:30. There were about 12-15 people, I was one of three girls. I met a guy who ran the Disney full this year and I told him we ran the half, and another guy was talking about all his marathons…this is when I looked around and realized we were among some really elite runners! eekk! Why are we doing this again?!?
Here I am right before we took off

We walked over to a map and the cast member showed us the “route” we would be taking. we were running down the road through the main guest areas then down the airstrip to the adult beach, around the bike path and back to the ship.
We took off running and we made the mistake of trying to keep pace with these crazy people. We backed off a little but I wanted to keep them in my sights. we ran a 9 something first mile and the sun was so hot I knew I couldn’t hold that pace.
It was really nice and peaceful though running with no one around on this beautiful island! We stopped a couple times to take pics

we came up on the airstrip where we had to go down to the end and then turn around and head down the bike path. We passed everyone already going back the other way and I started thinking we were not even halfway!

we thought it would be fun to get an action shot!
if you look behind me to the left you can see blue, that’s the water at the adult beach, so beautiful!

we turned into the bike path and we were all by ourselves, I kept hearing things rustling in the bushes!

we got to the observation tower and they had water there so we stopped and I refilled my bottle.

it seemed like we were on that stupid bike path forever! We finally came out and were headed bac down the rest of the airstrip and through the guest areas to the ship. We almost got lost once, too!

As we were going down the main path we ran into my parents who were headed for the beach. My mom of course starts cheering and screaming for us!
The last half mile was so brutal. We kept passing people going to the beach who looked at us like we were insane! At this point I started telling Bobby I hated him for making me do this! I looked at my garmin and we had gone 3.3 miles! We get back to the ship and the cast member who ran with us was waiting for us with towels, water, and a nice Disney cruise line water bottle. I thought all of that was a nice touch! He thanked us for running and we went back on the ship to change into our suits and meet my parents back at the beach!

Ok so those are my workout recaps. Stay tuned for more vaca pics!
I ran 2.1 miles outside today, it was so hot. running at 11:30 is not the best idea. I also did some arm weights. Not sure what I will do tomorrow yet!

Have a good night!

Yay, for the CC 5k! We got lost when we did it haha. I remember how hot it was! And I could NOT run on the treadmill on the cruise either, too much shaking! You should have run on deck 4. Though that was kind of annoying too b/c people would walk 3 across and I’d almost run into them.

My favorite place in the world to run is at the Jersey shore!

the seas were SO calm on our sea day we weren’t moving hardly at all, or very fast at all b/ the distance we had to travel was so short (nassau to CC)
i walked the deck 4 path a few times but ya running it wouldnt work there were always ppl there

Wow that looks like such a gorgeous run! Sadly, I think the best place I’ve run before has been Mill Creek Park – and that’s not really saying a lot lol

It’s always hard to workout on vacation. I always feel like I’m missing out on other things, so walking a lot is a good way to do double-duty, even if walking isn’t your usual means of exercise. You should be proud of yourself for getting some in. 🙂

I don’t think I have ran anywhere quite as beautiful as where you were, but I love running at any beach but mostly because of the flatness. haha.

your right, one of the reasons I didn’t want to run is I wanted more beach time!
But yup, we def. walked all over the place, my back was sore at night!

While it may have been hot, and you may have been on vacation and not in the mood to run, in retrospect I am sure you will be happy you did it. You can now officially add the Disney Castaway Cay 5k to your list of races! 🙂
Love the minnie skirt – you are giving Cindy and Christy some great advertising! LOL!

I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just o I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just okay.” Like, fine in a pinch… but never something I craved. 👀

But then this little picnic happened—just me, my girl, and a sweet treat we both loved enough to fight over the last bite. 😅

We’ve been trying to be more mindful with food choices lately (especially with summer travel coming up), and I grabbed these So Delicious treats at Kroger kind of on a whim. The new packaging caught my eye, but it was the taste that totally surprised us. Creamy. Indulgent. No weird aftertaste. And no, we’re not fully dairy-free—and we still loved them.

It’s one of those little swaps that doesn’t feel like giving anything up.

And that? That’s a win for both of us. ✨@So_Delicious

🚨 Homeschool decision!! If you have been aroun 🚨 Homeschool decision!!

If you have been around here since Christmas time, then you know we pulled Emma Kate out of her private school after the first semester and put her in a hybrid homeschool for the spring. The main reason being we wanted more absences than the school allowed.

What is a hybrid? In our case, she went to a school all day 3 days a week, and we taught her at home two days a week.

It seemed like the best of both worlds, not having absences count since we were also her teachers, being able to stay home some, sleep in, and travel.

Well, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. For one, the school we sent her to ended up not being what we thought. We were told being absent wouldn’t be a problem, but it became clear very early on her teacher was not a fan and she was not kind or accommodating to Emma Kate. There’s a lot of other reasons we didn’t blown the school I won’t go into. (If you are local and considering hybrid feel free to dm me and I will share my concerns and grievances.)

Teaching your kid is hard. There were lots of tears and frustrations, and she got bored since Bobby and I also work from home/I’m not a stay at hoke mom. We couldn’t just sit with her all day and teach her with our crazy long hours owning two businesses.

It was tough to keep a schedule and while getting to travel a lot was great, she didn’t thrive on not having a routine and struggled with the randomness of everything.

She is also a very social only child who missed her friends and also wants to play sports for her school.

In the end while there were a lot of pros to hybrid homeschool, the cons outweighed them for us so we are returning to her old school in the fall.

Am I glad we did it? Yes! I always would have wondered otherwise and now we know. We will still be pulling her out of school some to travel in the fall, just not as much.

If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments below and I will be happy to answer the best I can! 🩷

Tucked away just outside of Gatlinburg, Alpine Hav Tucked away just outside of Gatlinburg, Alpine Haven was everything we wanted in a mountain getaway—and then some. ⛰️

This luxury cabin has 4 spacious bedrooms (including one with built-in bunks that my daughter loved) and 4 full bathrooms, making it perfect for a family trip or group vacation.

We spent our days soaking in the hot tub with mountain views, lounging on the deck by the fireplace with coffee in hand, and playing pool in the game room.

The cabin even has its own private sauna and steam room—YES, really! It felt like a full-on spa experience right in the woods. ✨

And one of the best surprises? It has its own playground, which was a total hit with with daughter and such a bonus for keeping little ones entertained.

We were just minutes from downtown Gatlinburg, but honestly, we barely wanted to leave. If you’re planning a Smoky Mountains trip, Alpine Haven is that perfect mix of cozy, modern, and wow-worthy. 💫
