Never Say Never…to runDisney

April 29, 2015 | blogging, Disney, runDisney, running, Travel

Well, when I woke up yesterday morning I did NOT have plans of sitting in a virtual que in a panic trying to register for the runDisney marathon weekend! I found out yesterday morning that they are offering the castaway challenge after the race, which I ssoooo badly want to do. I have talked to and begged runDisney to partner with DCL for years, so it’s only fitting I do the challenge, right?

Inaugural Castaway Cay Challenge 5K Event on Disney Cruise Line Private Island

Bobby and I signed up for the half marathon with hopes of doing the Castaway challenge and cruising on the Disney Dream after the race, but we are realistic and also realize we may have to defer if things don’t work out in our favor. I am so so glad runDisney started to allow you to defer your race registration, it makes it a lot easier to pull the trigger and sign up!

After missing marathon weekend this year, it will be fun to go back without the stress of waking up four mornings in a row for Dopey! We probably won’t arrive until Friday, will hit up the expo, run Saturday, then relax Sunday before getting on the boat Monday. I’m trying not to get too excited in case we have to defer, but I am going to try to make sure it happens!

Who has done the Castaway Challenge? Any tips? What to do what to skip, any pointers? I need all the info I can get!

So, now I get to hopefully see a bunch of you during marathon weekend, and maybe even some of you on the cruise?

QOTD: Who is running and what are you running, and who is cruising with me?

P.S. I would love to book your cruise for the castaway challenge! Email me at heather@travelwiththemagic.com

I did the Inaugural CC5K and had a ton Of fun! Even wore my Chewy costume! I went with my cousin, too! I know you have cruised DCL before, but here are some thoughts for everyone. We did FE’s and I am glad we did. when I cruise DCL again, I will not, though. It was an incredible amount of work to ensure you got everyone in your group, personalized things, etc. But def do FE’s – for anyone – if you have not for the first time! I do not get off any cruise line in Nassau and the boat empties, so tons of quiet time wherever you wander on board! Explore as much of CC as you can. Challenge folks and family support got off the ship before the sun came up to do the run, then everyone else who did the regular 5K went second. Not sure if that has changed or not, but we were the first group ever to disembark on CC before the sun came up! It made for some INCREDIBLE morning pictures!! I had fun and I know whoever else does it will have a ton of fun too! Explore CC. The time will fly on by!! The island is beautiful. Go up to the adult section and look down upon the island. We had a great time!

Wow in the chewy costume lol! I have done 10 DCL cruises, 2 were double dips so I have been to CC 12 times, crazy I know! We always stay on the ship in nassau and serenity bay is my favorite place on earth! :)I used to do FE’s but way to much work now!

Be careful about the deferral. I got pregnant and was not allowed to run, so I tried to defer the Princess Half. Even though I tried to defer days before the deadline, they told me deferrals were sold out. I didn’t realize they limit deferrals.

My husband surprised me with signing us up for Dopey. I’m very excited especially to remind him during the early wake up calls that this was his idea 🙂 I kid, I love everything about runDisney races and we haven’t been to marathon weekend since Goofy in 2013.
I can’t wait to read all about the cruise! I’ve never had any desire to do a cruise until recently and it seems like Disney is the way to go !

At some point in the future I really want to do the challenge, this up coming year we won’t be able to but it’s because we did actually book a disney cruise (we’ve got two young young kids and we heard its just awesome for them too) right during this event. So sadly not this year, but maybe next!

I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just o I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just okay.” Like, fine in a pinch… but never something I craved. 👀

But then this little picnic happened—just me, my girl, and a sweet treat we both loved enough to fight over the last bite. 😅

We’ve been trying to be more mindful with food choices lately (especially with summer travel coming up), and I grabbed these So Delicious treats at Kroger kind of on a whim. The new packaging caught my eye, but it was the taste that totally surprised us. Creamy. Indulgent. No weird aftertaste. And no, we’re not fully dairy-free—and we still loved them.

It’s one of those little swaps that doesn’t feel like giving anything up.

And that? That’s a win for both of us. ✨@So_Delicious

🚨 Homeschool decision!! If you have been aroun 🚨 Homeschool decision!!

If you have been around here since Christmas time, then you know we pulled Emma Kate out of her private school after the first semester and put her in a hybrid homeschool for the spring. The main reason being we wanted more absences than the school allowed.

What is a hybrid? In our case, she went to a school all day 3 days a week, and we taught her at home two days a week.

It seemed like the best of both worlds, not having absences count since we were also her teachers, being able to stay home some, sleep in, and travel.

Well, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. For one, the school we sent her to ended up not being what we thought. We were told being absent wouldn’t be a problem, but it became clear very early on her teacher was not a fan and she was not kind or accommodating to Emma Kate. There’s a lot of other reasons we didn’t blown the school I won’t go into. (If you are local and considering hybrid feel free to dm me and I will share my concerns and grievances.)

Teaching your kid is hard. There were lots of tears and frustrations, and she got bored since Bobby and I also work from home/I’m not a stay at hoke mom. We couldn’t just sit with her all day and teach her with our crazy long hours owning two businesses.

It was tough to keep a schedule and while getting to travel a lot was great, she didn’t thrive on not having a routine and struggled with the randomness of everything.

She is also a very social only child who missed her friends and also wants to play sports for her school.

In the end while there were a lot of pros to hybrid homeschool, the cons outweighed them for us so we are returning to her old school in the fall.

Am I glad we did it? Yes! I always would have wondered otherwise and now we know. We will still be pulling her out of school some to travel in the fall, just not as much.

If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments below and I will be happy to answer the best I can! 🩷
