Nice to Meat You…and Other Healthy Changes

May 19, 2011 | Uncategorized

No, I am not a loser who spelled meet wrong, I am talking about MEAT, you know, like the stuff you eat. Erin over at The Healthy Apron asked me to help spread the word about MeatLESS May. (Sorry I am a little late girl, it’s been a busy month!)

Please note Erin is not saying (nor am I) to stop eating meat. I for one will always ALWAYS have meat as a PART of my diet. I also realize it can be unhealthy to eat it too much. We as Americans are so programmed (especially in the south) that in order for a meal to be a meal it must involve meat.  So, let’s join Erin and at least try to look into other healthy non-meat options. Even if you just throw in a random new meal once a week, you may even find a new favorite!

I will admit, for about two weeks now I have been eating more healthy and just by doing that I am noticing big changes. My face is more clear, I have more energy, and my sugar cravings haven’t been as bad as I thought they would be. I have been focusing on foods that are healthy and taste good, but that will keep me FULL so I am not constantly in the panty or refrigerator during the day.

One snack I have been eating almost everyday is Chobani yogurt, more specifically strawberry banana. Holy yum! The store closest to my house NEVER has strawberry banana so I drive to a FURTHER AWAY store just for this stuff. It’s so amazingly wonderful. It keeps me FULL in between meals which is one reason I am loving it!

I am also not eating late at night like I was when we first moved in. We were seriously eating ice cream and cupcakes almost every night, it was crazy. and unhealthy. and I slept horribly.

My next goal is drinking more water. I am about to be traveling a lot so this is super important! I know this will also help clear up my face. Fingers crossed!

QOTD: What is a healthy change you have made lately that you have noticed benefitting your health?

Well you know one change I made was adding arm workouts! Just started push ups last night. Another change is decreasing soda. I was a 3 soda a day girl now it is maybe 3 a week!! 🙂 In the first week of this I lost 4 pounds!

Bryan and I will have vegetarian meals once or twice a week. We love meat and won’t give it up, but its nice to make a meal centered around fresh veggies.

We’re also making sure we do something healthy before we allow ourselves to go out. Like last night we each did 5 minutes of abs before going to our favorite bar for a drink. Those crunchs probably didn’t make up for the calories we consumed, but its better than nothing. right?

I haven’t had any meat for almost three years now and I cut out soda in the past year. I try to only have desserts when something special is happening. I have been in super triathlon training mode so that the big thing I am working on right now

My healthy habit has been exercising regularly. When I exercise, I automatically eat better, too!
I’ve never stuck with a workout plan for more than a couple months at a time. Now that I keep adding goals…a half marathon, and now a full marathon…I know that I have to keep training!

We do meatless Monday every week, which I started when my dr suggested I cut red meat out of my diet due to the hormones in it (I’m supposed to be able to do organic/free range beef but I haven’t tried it yet). I was premenopausal and have noticed a HUGE difference in the way my body feels since dropping red meat. I used to cheat every 6 months but now the way my body reacts just isn’t worth it.

PS The way I started drinking more water was getting one of those reusable tumblers w/ a straw, fill with ice and water and you’re good to go. I keep one at home and one at work.

I am able to eat unhealthy and sleep like a baby and it doesn’t affect me at all. This is probably why your “cupcakes and ice cream every night” sounds so awesome to me. It is not awesome for my weight however.

I try my best to drink more water too but I fall off the wagon…a lot. So today, I’m already on glass #3. So, here’s to being back on the wagon again. 🙂

A healthy change I’ve made lately is doing more cross-training and strength training! I used to run and only run for exercise, but now I see how much my body appreciates some variety! I’ve fallen in love with pilates!

These past few weeks have actually been some of the unhealthiest in my life for reasons I can’t control. But I’m hoping that turns around in a few weeks!

I’m not sure I could give up meat…ummm, yummy protein!! But I have been drinking lots more water. I tend to drink sweet tea just about everywhere I go eat, but I’ve really cut back and only drink it occasionally. Drinking more water definitely helps me feel more energetic and I know it’s great for my body!

I could never give it up either, yum!
I hear ya on the sweet tea. I have one or two restaurants I always get it at, but I have been trying to do water lately!

I definitely need to drink more water too. My husband doesn’t believe he’s been properly fed unless there is meat involved so the nights I cook without meat he nearly always says, “well, this was good, but it would’ve been even better if it had some meat in it.” 😛

Since March I’ve been eating a Chobani a day as well. It’s delicious- my favorite is pomegranate though! I’m also trying to hydrate more. I struggle greatly with this, but can tell a big difference when I get enough to eat.

I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just o I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just okay.” Like, fine in a pinch… but never something I craved. 👀

But then this little picnic happened—just me, my girl, and a sweet treat we both loved enough to fight over the last bite. 😅

We’ve been trying to be more mindful with food choices lately (especially with summer travel coming up), and I grabbed these So Delicious treats at Kroger kind of on a whim. The new packaging caught my eye, but it was the taste that totally surprised us. Creamy. Indulgent. No weird aftertaste. And no, we’re not fully dairy-free—and we still loved them.

It’s one of those little swaps that doesn’t feel like giving anything up.

And that? That’s a win for both of us. ✨@So_Delicious

🚨 Homeschool decision!! If you have been aroun 🚨 Homeschool decision!!

If you have been around here since Christmas time, then you know we pulled Emma Kate out of her private school after the first semester and put her in a hybrid homeschool for the spring. The main reason being we wanted more absences than the school allowed.

What is a hybrid? In our case, she went to a school all day 3 days a week, and we taught her at home two days a week.

It seemed like the best of both worlds, not having absences count since we were also her teachers, being able to stay home some, sleep in, and travel.

Well, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. For one, the school we sent her to ended up not being what we thought. We were told being absent wouldn’t be a problem, but it became clear very early on her teacher was not a fan and she was not kind or accommodating to Emma Kate. There’s a lot of other reasons we didn’t blown the school I won’t go into. (If you are local and considering hybrid feel free to dm me and I will share my concerns and grievances.)

Teaching your kid is hard. There were lots of tears and frustrations, and she got bored since Bobby and I also work from home/I’m not a stay at hoke mom. We couldn’t just sit with her all day and teach her with our crazy long hours owning two businesses.

It was tough to keep a schedule and while getting to travel a lot was great, she didn’t thrive on not having a routine and struggled with the randomness of everything.

She is also a very social only child who missed her friends and also wants to play sports for her school.

In the end while there were a lot of pros to hybrid homeschool, the cons outweighed them for us so we are returning to her old school in the fall.

Am I glad we did it? Yes! I always would have wondered otherwise and now we know. We will still be pulling her out of school some to travel in the fall, just not as much.

If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments below and I will be happy to answer the best I can! 🩷
