Summer Travel Plans

June 16, 2015 | blogging, family, food, Mental Health, Travel

Every summer, Bobby and I go to Destin, Florida for three days. He attends a work conference in the mornings, and then we get to hang out in the afternoons. Last year my parents went with us, and this year they are coming again! (It’s nice to have someone to hang out with while Bobby is in his meetings). Baby girl will be staying home with Bobby’s mom. She lives out of town and so she doesn’t get to see Emma Kate a lot, so I know she is excited!

We can’t take the baby because we are staying at Henderson Park Inn, an adult’s only bed and breakfast. I have written about them before, and I cannot wait to go back for the third year in a row.

At Henderson Park Inn, they spoil you rotten with an amazing buffet breakfast with create your own omelets and waffles, fruit, bacon, grits, you name it. Included in the price are water front beach chairs, towels, snacks, water and soda, and a happy hour every night.

Rooms are gorgeous and spacious as well.

Not to mention, we will be right in the heart of Destin just minutes and walking distance to restaurants and shops. It is just across the highway from the Destin Commons, the huge shopping complex, and down the road from the Silver Sands outlet mall. I love to explore Destin and find new restaurants and places to go. As a kid, we went to the beach most summers, so while I am familiar with the area, every year there are new places to go!

We always try to get away somewhere in the summer, and I try to look for ways to make our travel easier and more efficient. The Discover It Miles credit card is a great option for your summer travel plans, wherever you are looking to go. This card has no annual fee, and includes a $30 credit each year for in flight Wi-Fi! For those of you traveling out of the country, there are no foreign transaction fees. Discover it Miles cardmembers can redeem miles at any amount for cash, or as a statement credit toward their travel purchases, including commercial airline tickets, hotel rooms, car rentals, commuter transportation and taxicabs.DSC_0893

You can learn more about the card and explore rewards to see for yourself how it can help your summer travel plans!

We leave for our trip in less than a month, and I can’t wait to sink my toes into the sand again, and enjoy that Florida sunshine.

QOTD: What are your summer travel plans? Do you use a credit card to help you travel? Reward points?

That’s too bad that you have to leave AK for this trip! I don’t know how you do it – I hate leaving my daughter for more than a few hours at a time! Hopefully next time you’ll be able to figure out a more baby-friendly vacation spot!

We have to go, it’s a work conference. It’s just three days…. It’s so ridiculously hot at the beach in July she would be miserable anyway. Plus…Not all mamas are built the same and I’m glad she will get to spend some one on one time with Bobby’s mom. 😉

Sounds like an awesome place! I am definitely getting in a beach day or two this summer in between marathon training! I’m not going anywhere because it’s all about saving for NY.
I’m sure it will be a mixed bag of nice to be without the little one, and missing the heck out of her while you’re gone.

It’s been since high school that I’ve been to Destin…I won’t say how many years THAT has been. This place looks Ah-mazing!

That looks like a great place to unwind! Do you plan to include EK on some trips when she’s older, especially since you mentioned you enjoyed the beach growing up?

How does she do with new people watching her? My son is a mama’s boy and I can’t leave him with anyone new (I could but my anxiety would be outrageous and like the above commenter I can barely survive the work day without him anyway). I know many babies are happy with anyone though and do fine, so I’m always interested to hear others’ experiences.

We absolutely plan to take her on trips when she is a little older (as in next year). However, I don’t think a 7+ hour car ride with a baby who hates the car coupled with 100 degree temps at the beach are really a good idea for an 8 month old though, and doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience so she is staying home.
She does great with other people b/c she has been going to church nursery + daycare 2-3 x’s a week since she was 3 months old. Plus, my MIL will be watching her, she comes in town when she can to watch her/visit so shes definitely not a new person. But shes pretty laid back with things like that and will let anyone hold her etc.
Every mom is different, and I am fine with leaving her for a few days. She will learn some independence and realize it’s ok if mom isn’t around every minute (plus I think it’s great for mama to have a break!) It works for us and shes a super happy girl so I don’t think it bothers her much 🙂

Destin looks awesome! I was just at Panama City Beach, Florida and want to go back so bad, it’s just gorgeous there! Also, I need a new miles credit card so I will check this out!

I don’t know how you deal with some of these comments. You answer them so nicely! It is refreshing to see a Mom who knows it is important to get away, spend time alone with her husband, and isn’t whining about leaving her child. Of course you will miss her and of course you will take her on vacation in the future but NO, an 8 month old at the beach does not sound fun and she will be in capable hands with your MIL! Don’t let these people make you second guess your choices for one second! Enjoy your trip 🙂

Sara, trust me when I say sometimes it is very VERY hard to answer nicely. I can spot passive aggressiveness out of nowhere. 🙂 We of course don’t plan to leave her at home every time we vacation as she grows up. Who does that? But right now it’s not like she will remember. I feel like a lot of the people who are defensive about it are probably REALLY needing a mom/dad vaca of their own but for whatever reason can’t go so they take it out on me. I feel bad for them, I really do, I think everyone should have the chance to do this, but I just wish they wouldn’t take out their frustrations on others. 🙁

I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just o I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just okay.” Like, fine in a pinch… but never something I craved. 👀

But then this little picnic happened—just me, my girl, and a sweet treat we both loved enough to fight over the last bite. 😅

We’ve been trying to be more mindful with food choices lately (especially with summer travel coming up), and I grabbed these So Delicious treats at Kroger kind of on a whim. The new packaging caught my eye, but it was the taste that totally surprised us. Creamy. Indulgent. No weird aftertaste. And no, we’re not fully dairy-free—and we still loved them.

It’s one of those little swaps that doesn’t feel like giving anything up.

And that? That’s a win for both of us. ✨@So_Delicious

🚨 Homeschool decision!! If you have been aroun 🚨 Homeschool decision!!

If you have been around here since Christmas time, then you know we pulled Emma Kate out of her private school after the first semester and put her in a hybrid homeschool for the spring. The main reason being we wanted more absences than the school allowed.

What is a hybrid? In our case, she went to a school all day 3 days a week, and we taught her at home two days a week.

It seemed like the best of both worlds, not having absences count since we were also her teachers, being able to stay home some, sleep in, and travel.

Well, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. For one, the school we sent her to ended up not being what we thought. We were told being absent wouldn’t be a problem, but it became clear very early on her teacher was not a fan and she was not kind or accommodating to Emma Kate. There’s a lot of other reasons we didn’t blown the school I won’t go into. (If you are local and considering hybrid feel free to dm me and I will share my concerns and grievances.)

Teaching your kid is hard. There were lots of tears and frustrations, and she got bored since Bobby and I also work from home/I’m not a stay at hoke mom. We couldn’t just sit with her all day and teach her with our crazy long hours owning two businesses.

It was tough to keep a schedule and while getting to travel a lot was great, she didn’t thrive on not having a routine and struggled with the randomness of everything.

She is also a very social only child who missed her friends and also wants to play sports for her school.

In the end while there were a lot of pros to hybrid homeschool, the cons outweighed them for us so we are returning to her old school in the fall.

Am I glad we did it? Yes! I always would have wondered otherwise and now we know. We will still be pulling her out of school some to travel in the fall, just not as much.

If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments below and I will be happy to answer the best I can! 🩷
