Turkey Trot 5k 2011

November 28, 2011 | Uncategorized

Good morning! IN an attempt to not be sad that the holiday weekend is over, I thought I would do a race recap of the Turkey Trot Bobby and I ran on Thanksgiving morning.

When my alarm went off at 6:00, I seriously considered just not getting up. I knew once I was up I would be fine, so I forced myself out of bed and to the kitchen for some coffee. We got ready to go, and left the house at 7:00.

It was a beautiful day, sunny about 50 degrees. We made it to the little downtown area where the race was being held, and went to register.

Yes, those are people dressed up like giant bananas, and yes, they danced for us.

They had nice long sleeved shirts for us, but they ran out of small so I have to go pick mine up next week after they order some more. We warmed up a bit, put on our bibs, and then it was 8:00!

I was a little nervous about how I was going to hold up for this race. I have been battling a foot injury that I wasn’t convinced I had seen the last of. Due to said foot injury, I had run a total of 12 miles in 3 weeks. Very slow miles. I haven’t run a 5k since the spring nor worked on speed since then, since I have been focusing on half marathons. Also, the registration form stated it was “a challenging out and  back course” which could only mean one thing, hills.

I told Bobby to have a good race and we took off! I paced myself well in the beginning and didn’t let myself just take off. We went down a long street then turned a corner toward the beach and started to go downhill. Crap. This meant when we were exhausted coming BACK up the street it would be all uphill. I made it down to the beach road, and I was feeling really good. We ran along the beach (where I run often) and right before the turn around I spotted Bobby. I was probably only a minute or so behind him and still feeling good. I made it back to the other road turning back north and got warm so I unstrapped my Garmin to roll up my sleeve…and I dropped my Garmin, so I had to stop, run back and go get it. oops.

I hit the first uphill and got an immediate familiar pain in my left foot. AAARRRGGHH! The stabbing pain did not let up for the rest of the race unfortunately. I was really loosing steam having to go up these dang hills, and I knew it was killing my time. I finally made the last turn back onto the street the race was on and I could see the finish line. I thought “wow I must be so close since I can see it, I am going to PR!” Well…how deceptive. It is a LONG street. I kept running…and running…and it took forever to get to that dumb finish line. I was sprint/hobbling as fast as I could and managed to finish in 28:20, just a few seconds off of my PR. I was a little frustrated because I knew my foot slowed me down and I really wanted to PR and run a 5k injury free for once!

I caught up with Bobby who ran right at a 25:00 (he has run maybe 3 times in 2 months?) We got some water and a banana (of course, but not one of the dancing ones.) and hung out in the sunshine waiting for the results.

Much to our surprise, Bobby placed third in his age group…and so did I!

I was very very shocked but pleasantly surprised.

We headed back to the car, took a couple more pictures, and headed home for some cooking and eating!

tweeting about the race. I definitely did not tell him to take that one. Thanks dear.

So now, today, I am going to call a doctor about going to get my foot x rayed. I have to find out what’s going on here.

QOTD: Did you turkey trot Thursday? Or race this weekend?

My husband and I did a turkey trot too :). We really enjoyed it but it was a huge race (400+ people) so neither of us placed in our age groups, although I did come close (bleh, would honestly rather NOT know that I came close and then didn’t).

That’s so awesome that you managed to do so well with the foot injury and not being able to run! The same with Bobby not running much, it seems like sometimes when you run less you actually do better in a race, I guess? Either way, pretty neat that you both got medals.

It’s also really cool that the race is getting you a shirt in your size next week. If that happened here, I’d just have to get another size or not get a shirt. Ours next order more =(

I did do a turkey trot on Thanksgiving morning – and I was the ONLY one in costume out of 1120 runners. I ended up with a time of 26:03.2 and placed 300th overall. Not bad considering I was in a costume and had some severe blisters happening on my right foot. I’m sorry to hear that your foot acted up again! But nice work on your finish! 🙂

Great job on your PR!! No real turkey trot for us – ours is a 5 mi and just too inconvenient for us to be out of the kitchen that long. I hope your foot heals fast!

    Third place! Wow! Congratulations!

I have a weird foot injury that’s been plaguing me for months also! I went to a podiatrist, and he took x-rays and an ultrasound but found nothing. I’d be curious to know more about your injury; maybe we can compare notes? My e-mail is abetterlifewithburgers@gmail.com. Would love to hear from you!

Women, I encourage you in 2026 to find a table where women champion other women. And I encourage all the ladies here to be a girl’s girl. There is room for everyone, and we ALL need a little support, even those that look like they have it all together.

Let’s commit to helping each other on AND offline. A simple smile, an “I love your dress” or “your kid did great in the school play” or “hang in there, you got this!” Goes a long way.

I will never understand people going out of their way to intentionally bypass a person online or in real life. People matter. It’s a tough time of year for a lot of people, so let’s all act like the friends we claim to be and be there for each other however we can. ❤️

It’s literally just water frozen in the bottom of a glass with some rosemary taped in it. I waited a few hours the poured in some Prosecco and added in edible glitter (you can use multiple colors!) pretty and delicious, and keeps your drink cold! Cheers! 🥂 ❄️

The end of the year is always a time that I reflec The end of the year is always a time that I reflect on how things went, what I want to do different or better in the new year, and to be honest…I’m always really hard on myself.😕

I often end up sad or frustrated that things didn’t “turn out as planned.” But planned according to who? Success according to what?

As we were ice skating last weekend at Gaylord Opryland, laughing and just having so much fun as a family, I was hit with what I can only describe as a warm fuzzy. I wanted to smile and cry all at the same time. I thought to myself….this is it right here. 🥹

If nothing else good happens, I’ve got this and am so rich because of it. These moments. This is what I always prayed for as a girl when imagining my family one day. And it’s here, happening right now. I don’t want to wish it away waiting for the next big thing to happen.

I just want to ice skate with them in a place that makes us so happy. Wha a year. ⛸️ ❤️

I took the day off on Thursday and then worked a ton Friday, EK had bball Saturday and then we went out of town. I realized I never posted for turkey day! 😜

I have so much to be thankful for, most days I feel completely undeserving. God has been good to us, even in the days that don’t feel so good. His plans may not make sense at the time, but thankfully He is the one that sees the whole picture, not us!

We are going into the Christmas season with hearts full of gratitude and love as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. This is the most special and my favorite time of year! Let the celebrating continue!

Lastly, I am thankful for all of YOU! For liking, commenting on, and watching my content over the years. Without you, my career doesn’t exist and I am beyond thankful for the opportunities this job has given me. So THANK YOU! 🫶🏻
