Sunday Randoms

Hello friends! I am actually typing this post on Friday morning for Sunday (today now, I guess) so I hope by time this is posted you will have all had a fabulous weekend! More on mine later. This morning…er…I mean Friday morning, our new neighborhood YMCA FINALLY opened! Just in the nick of time, because I was starting to go stir crazy in the boot with nowhere to workout! (we cancelled our other membership at for the end of November.) Bobby and I had a great early morning weights workout before he went to work, then I hit the stationary bike for an hour.

Our view while working out:

Can I just say I know I am going to be really, really sore.

It felt really good to sweat again, and it totally changed my mood. I realized the past couple weeks I haven’t been really doing much I have been tired and grumpy, and I felt SO much better after that workout!

Moving on to more randomness, here are a couple of Christmas pictures from my house. I color coordinated my wrapping paper this year. Trying to be all pinterest cool and stuff.

Bella appreciates the wrapping paper.

I hope you all have a great day! See you back here tomorrow for another work week. I can’t believe Christmas is two weeks from today! I want time to slow down so I can enjoy it!

QOTD: What kind of wrapping paper did you use this year? Any reason?

Childhood Obesity Vlog

Good morning! I am actually away/busy this weekend, but here is something fun I filmed for you yesterday before the craziness started. I decided due to some coaxing from some blends to do some more vlogs. I have some great ideas for some fun and action packed ones for when I am out of the boot, but for now you just have to listen to me talk. Smile

Today’s vlog is about something near and dear to my heart, the childhood (and college student) obesity epidemic. Hear what I have to say on the matter, and I would LOVE your feedback! I will “recap” below the post in case you don’t have speakers/don’t want to wake your entire family up by listening to my dog growl at me in my video. Enjoy!

Oh boy. Yes, my dog DOES growl to be held, like a child. Well, kids don’t growl…I hope. Anyway, as a recap:

-Obesity in children and young adults is worse than ever

-College students need better education on healthy habits and eating/exercise coming into an already overwhelming Freshman year.

-kids need to step away from the screen and go PLAY outside.

-PARENTS need to take responsibility for instilling healthy habits, and with the help of schools and the community, we need to come up with more ways to fix this problem.

QOTD: My questions for you:

1.) What can we do as a parent/teacher/member of a community do to fix this

2.) What do you already do/implement as a parent/teacher/community member to teach children and young adults healthy habits? I would love to start some discussion!

*Bloggers! If you are running Disney Princess and want to take part in a meet up please vote on the poll on my right sidebar!

…aaannnddd for your enjoyment, I present you this six second little gem. By the way, the last word I am saying (which sadly got cut off) is “fail!”

Get Healthy, Starting NOW!

As a lot of you know I am a FitFluential Ambassador. I was so excited to be chosen back when it all began, and things are really starting to move now and I couldn’t be more excited! We were asked to share 7 steps or tips we could give to someone who wanted to start being healthy, right now. SO many people say “I will start Monday” or “I will start in January” but why not start now? We are not promised tomorrow, so make today the first day of the rest of your life, and make it a good one! So, here are my 7 tips/steps. Small things you can start doing NOW that will put you on the path to being fit and healthy:

1. Find your motivation/inspiration: Everyone has a reason that they want to be healthy. It is the thing way down deep that keeps you going even in the hard times. The thing you think about when you don’t feel like working out. This can be your family, an upcoming race or competition, wanting to be alive long enough to see your grandkids get married, anything really! Once you figure out what it is, it can help drive you and push you on to meet your goals.

2. Get enough sleep: Sounds so simple but is so difficult for some people. If you are not getting enough sleep, you will fall into a vicious cycle of exhaustion, excuses, and grumpiness! How can you adequately care for your family if you are exhausted? How can you feel like working out if all you want to do is take a nap? Aim for 7-8 hours and notice a big jump in your drive and energy levels.

3. Cook more: We all know that restaurant meals are way larger than an actual portion should be. A person can easily consume a day’s worth of calories in one meal out. Pack your lunch before you go to work, celebrate the weekend in some other way than eating out, and save restaurants for special occasions. Or, learn where you CAN eat out that has healthy options with correct portion sizes.

4. take time each day to be still: Here on RWS I place a lot of importance on mental health as well as physical health. I feel that you can be as physically fit as you want but if you are mentally or emotionally exhausted or struggling, you aren’t truly “healthy.” So take a few minutes each day to sit in the quiet by yourself and reflect. For me, it’s praying. For someone else, it may be taking a nice long bath. But take some time to be still and decompress every day. Even if it’s just five minutes.

5.  Eat Breakfast: So many people think if they skip breakfast they will lose weight. Breakfast is wht kick starts your metabolism for the day and keeps your energy levels up. If you skip breakfast not only are you more likely to be tired, but also more likely to over eat later in the day.

6. Move more: It can be parking at the farthest away spot in the parking lot, or going to an extra spin class this week, but just move more! Have a dance party with your kids while you help them clean their rooms. Walk the dog. Play tag with your kids in the backyard. It doesn’t have to be an hour long sweat session to count as a workout, just get your body moving and you will WANT to do more and more!

7. Make it fun: If you don’t enjoy what you are doing it’s easy to let new good habits die. To make them tick, make sure you are enjoying what you are doing. If you hate running, don’t run! Take a zumba class instead. There are so many ways to stay active and fit, just get a little creative and see what you can come up with!

QOTD: Do you have any tips for someone trying to get healthy?

2012 Race Wishlist

One of my favorite activities is finding races all over the place. Generally, I have to find a semi-local one unless I am racing because of a work related Running Skirts trip. I of course have in my head a “dream race” wish list, but that is for another day and post. This post is strictly about races I would like to run in 2012 that would even be feasible for myself financially, as far as time/seasons go, etc. Since I have been in the boot all I have been thinking about is racing and it’s making me bonkers! So, I thought listing it all out would help. Obviously, I am not running all of these! Starting with January and moving forward…

January 2012:

Gulf Coast Half Marathon Gulf Shores, AL

Louisiana Riverfront Half Marathon Kenner, LA

Long Beach Carnival Classic half marathon

February 2012:

Disney Princess Half Orlando, FLalready registered

March 2012:

RnR New Orleans half or fullalready registered for half, may change to full depends on the foot (completed 2010 and 2011)

April 2012:

Gulf coast half marathon, Pensacola Beach FL

May-September 2012:

You are out of your mind if you want to run a half or full during these months down south!

October 2012:

Jazz Half marathon New Orleans (Completed 2010)

Gulf Coast Half Mandeville, LA (completed 2011)

November 2012:

Stenis Space center half

December 2012:

Old Man River Half Marathon NOLA

Maybe you will find a race YOU want to run amongst these listed! Let me know if one sparks your interest! I will also of course be running several 5k’s and maybe 10k’s here and there when I can!

QOTD: What is on your race wish list for 2012?

*Send me a picture of your Christmas tree or outside Christmas lights and I will post them on my blog along with your blog link as we get close to Christmas!

*Check out the Running Skirts sale!

RWS Features #3

Happy hump day everyone! I hope your week is going ok! I know everyone is gearing up for Christmas parties and seeing family, but I hope you will still have time to visit RWS during your hectic holiday schedules. I say that because mine is about to get a little hectic, too! Don’t worry, I will still be posting every day, but every weekend until after Christmas I will be really busy and not around as much on Facebook, Twitter, or your blogs, but I’m still “here!”

Yesterday it was more ab work, and I finally got a peppermint milkshake form Chick-Fil-A. I go crazy every year when these babies come out. I am so glad they wised up and made them in the smaller size. I would get such a bad stomachache after eating the large ones in years past!

Today I am posting my third RWS features post, please show some encouragement, visit their blog, add them to your reader, share the love! (Speaking of which, if you use Google Reader and haven’t downloaded the new super reader you are missing out! You can see everyone’s FULL blog in reader and you can comment, and it still counts as a page view. So exciting!)

Meet Karien from Running the Race!

1.  How/why did you start blogging?
Writing and running are two of my big, big passions in life, and so I thought: “Why not combine the two?”.  I also started blogging as a means to share and record some of the day-to-day joys, frustrations, blessings and lessons that come my way – love learning from and sharing things with other like-minded blogging friends!

2.  Sum up your blog in a couple of sentences.
Running the Race is about all of the things I’m passionate about: Running; racing; healthy living; good, wholesome food; friendships; relationships; and finding joy in the small things in life.  I truly believe that life is a blessing and a gift and that, despite all the challenges, heart aches and frustrations that come as part of the package, we need to focus on the good things and learn from the rest.  Not always easy, but certainly an adventure!

3.  What do you wish to accomplish/achieve by blogging?
At first my blog was all about me sharing things, but later it grew into something much more fulfilling: Interacting with so many amazing people from all over the world and all walks of life.  It’s fun to share my views, experiences and opinions, but also so interesting to learn that there are so many different (and opposite!) opinions and perspectives out there.  Definitely therefore a place to share, learn, encourage, be encouraged, build friendships and sometimes win some amazing swag!

4.  What is your biggest healthy living accomplishment?
Finally, after years and years of emotional eating, weight struggles and self-image issues, lots of lessons learnt and even more grace, reaching a point where I feel truly happy in my skin.  What an awesome blessing!

Thank you so much for sharing a little about yourself and your blog!

QOTD: What is your favorite thing about the blogging community?

Grand Floridian/Polynesian Resort Gym

Baby it’s cold outside! It was warm and muggy yesterday, but the rain brought in a cold front, and it’s in the 40’s this morning. BBbbrrr! I like it though, it felt more like April than December yesterday. Today I have a good bit of work to do, calls, etc. and I hope to get in an ab/arm workout. I am on day 8 of the boot, and pray all the time it is actually working .

*The spa part of the fitness center is closed for 18 months for refurbishment. This started mid September, but the workout/gym area is still open for use.

Due to some construction at the Grand Floridian, the walkway has been re routed to get to the gym. Just head towards the beach/waterfall pool and you will see signs directing you down the path towards the building. Coming from the Polynesian, head towards the wedding pavilion along the sidewalk and it will be on your left.

You walk into a nice Lobby area, where you are greeted by an employee who will check your key card to insure you are in fact a guest of the Grand Floridian or the Polynesian. You turn to the right and go through a door into the gym area. Not only does the gym have pretty much all the equipment you will need to workout, but they have towels, magazines, and a place to get (very cold I might add) in the corner.

There are plenty of treadmills, bikes, and elliptical all facing flat screen televisions for your boredom breaker enjoyment.

There are also plenty of weight machines, as well as free weights.

The back wall has mirrors all the way across the wall as well.

There are also mat’s and an exercise ball you can use for floor work or ab work.

Generally, if I am going to workout I will walk fast or jog the path to the gym as my warm up, and then walk or slow jog back for a cool down. It’s the perfect distance away for that purpose, and I hope I will continue to be able to go back to the gym to get my sweat on!

QOTD: When you workout on vacation, do you just run, or do you hit the gym for weights or cross training as well?

All Lit Up

Good morning! Catching up from the weekend?

Saturday, I posted about Friday night and the new frozen yogurt place in town.

Sunday I posted about Saturday, when I went with Bobby to his cheer competition, and I posted the video of him partner stunting/throwing baskets etc. Be sure to check it out, he’s good!

It’s dreary and rainy here. A cold front is coming through and it’s windy! It was like this all day yesterday too, but we still had a great day! We did a lot of cleaning and football watching. We also took the girls out in the golf cart and let them run around out by the lake. They LOVE running on the flat grassy area, chasing birds and smelling all the new smells.

Birds?! Where? I am getting bored with these squeaky toys you make me play with.

I also finally had a chance to get up the remainder of our outside Christmas lights. I think the house came out nicely, except for the one strand of red in the trees that is halfway lit. I hate how easily lights go out! Oh well!

aannddd all lit up!

You can see the Christmas tree through the left window.

I had a “vision” of how I wanted the garland/lights and I think I did a good job of making it a reality. The only thing missing is some lights on the front bushes and garland/lights around the door, but I didn’t want to have to buy any, so maybe I will hit up some after Christmas sales.

It’s day 7 in the boot, and while I hardly notice it anymore, it is still SO frustrating to be so immobile. I miss running, and dancing around the living room to Christmas music, and being able to wear two shoes at once. December 20th needs to hurry up and get here! I am doing ab work and arm work as much as I can without a gym, but my abs get sore so I can’t do it every day. I am trying to be mindful of my eating, and so far I am doing ok but I also haven’t done any holiday baking yet…oh boy.

QOTD: DO you decorate outside for Christmas? Do you go around and look at lights?

*Don’t forget! Send me a picture of your outside Christmas lights (or Christmas tree or both!) and I will post on the blog! [email protected]

Good morning! It’s a good day to be an LSU Tiger! The first half may not have been pretty, but we did it, and are SEC champions! Next stop, BCS championship game. I almost had a heart attack during half time, but they didn’t let me down in the second half. I proudly sported my LSU shirt today at Bobby’s cheer competition. Oh yes, you read that right. I hobbled around with my boot at a cheerleading competition. Lots of little girls and lots of makeup and hair bows!

Not only does Bobby coach tumbling and partner stunting, but he competes on their open squad (coed any age) and they performed today at a competition in town for fun as an exhibition team. They did really really well for hardly ever practicing. Ha! Bobby can do a lot cooler of stunts than some of the ones he did here, but this is just a taste of his capability. He’s really really good!

Bobby is 2nd guy from the right (I zoom in on him in the beginning and several times during the competition while he is doing stunts)

For those that don’t know, Bobby was supposed to play football in college, but after football season his senior year of high school he had to have major stomach surgery and was told he couldn’t play anymore (being hit in the stomach would not be good.) He had some friends who did cheer and we ended up being a natural, and he competed for 5 years in college and coached (and still currently does) for many many years. He’s not the best tumbler, but he is great at partner stunting.

He even got a trophy. Weeeeee!

Sadly, I don’t have a flexible bone in my body, and was taller than the girls he puts up when I was in 5th grade so sadly for my future offspring, cheering is probably NOT in their future. Hopefully they will be all over volleyball and basketball though. Smile

QOTD: Did you play sports in high school or college? Which ones?

**Send me a picture of your outdoor Christmas lights and I will post it closer to Christmas!

Fro Yo, it’s Cold, Yo!

BBbbbrrrr! I am sitting by the fire as I type, and baby, it’s cold outside! Last night was equally cold as we ventured out for dinner. We saw a huge sign at the intersection stating that the new Frozen Yogurt spot I have been drooling over for a couple months, Local Culture, was finally open! Despite the frigid night temps, I told Bobby to save room, we were going for dessert!

The décor is funky and hip. I was sad for just a minute when I remembered this location used to house my oh so missed Frosting cupcake store that sold the to die for wedding cake cupcake, but my sadness quickly disappeared when I did some taste testing!

Bobby had a major taste testing #fail and got fro yo all over the place. Way to go Bobby. Please don’t claim that your broken nose caused this. Oh, I forgot to mention. Bobby got his nose broken coaching tumbling Thursday night. He was spotting a girl doing a back handspring and she wacked him in the face.

He may kill me for this but it’s TOTALLY worth it. And no, he isn’t crying, his eyes just would not stop watering!

Poor thing. His nose is huge. Well, it’s big anyway, but bigger than USUAL I mean. Just kidding! sort of. Ok so back to fro yo. I ended up getting a mix of cookies n cream and cheesecake with oreo and heath bar pieces on top.

Bobby copy catted me and got the same kind but with fruit toppings. I really hate a copy cat. Make your own decisions, dude! :o)

There were plenty of places to sit, but only one other couple inside. Oh, I forgot, the temps were dipping into the 40’s. Maybe that had something to do with it? I think I am still trying to thaw out!

It really hit the spot, and we will be coming back! The watermelon and pomegranate were both really good when I sampled them!

After all I ate tonight I am going to have to do about a million crunches since, you know, I can’t run in my stupid boot.

Today we are finishing up our outdoor Christmas lights and Bobby has a cheer competition he is in today and coaching. oh yes, I will be there, and I will be video taping the thing for your enjoyment. You can thank me later.

Speaking of Christmas lights, I LOVE seeing other people’s lights. One of my favorite things to do as a kid on Christmas eve was go around looking at all the lights. So, email me a picture of your house all lit up for Christmas to [email protected] and I will do a collection and post them on the blog closer to Christmas. Kind of like a virtual ride around to look at lights. sound good?

QOTD: What is your favorite Fro yo TOPPING? I love strawberries and cherries, but the heath bar bits were SO good!

Friday Favorites: Hulu

Happy Friday friends! I spend all day yesterday thinking it was Wednesday, so it’s a pleasant surprise that today is Friday. I spent yesterday doing some work, house cleaning, and I also did some ab work and arm work, you know, things I can do in the boot. Today I plan to do more of the same, and finish hanging our outside Christmas lights so I can have some picture for yall this weekend. Since I don’t have them yet, here is a fun picture of frozen Bella in her evil sweater. Yes friends, she stayed frozen like this for a minute or two until I fixed it. Poor baby.

I haven’t done Friday Favorites in a couple weeks so I figured it was time for another round! So what am I loving this week? Hulu! Well, actually, I love Hulu every week, but since I have been in the boot, I have tried to stay on the couch a bit more because it’s so cumbersome. When I need a break from work I can’t go run, so instead I watch reruns of Desperate housewives (my new addiction. Why have I never watched this before?) Today I caught up on last week’s Biggest Loser, which really made me miss running!

You can even pay for Hulu plus and watch even more shows, on more devices, in HD with no advertisements. I have been tempted to pay for Hulu plus for awhile but haven’t taken the plunge. Has anyone done this? What do you think? I may try the one week free trial.

Hulu will even recommend new shows for you based on what you watch, and it also will tell you what the most recent and most popular episodes are for any given day.

Hulu is especially great in the summer when all of my favorite shows are on hiatus until fall comes, and there is no football to watch (sad times for Heather and Bobby!)

But not anymore, since I discovered Hulu a year of so ago. Happiness!!!

I have some mad ups, yo.

QOYD: Do you watch television online? Do you use Hulu or another site? which one?
