June Photo Dump

Good morning! I didn’t get home until 10:00 last night, so the great post I was working on isn’t going up until tomorrow because I needed more time on it. So today you get a “wordless Wednesday” of sorts (just ignore that I’m using words RIGHT NOW….ok so I will caption them…) and see some of the photos I am dumping into my computer from my phone. Some have appeared on Instagram, some haven’t.

What’s Beautiful: Blogger Inspiration

This post is sponsored by Under Armour through Fitfluential

I have been posting a good bit about the Under Armour What’s Beautiful Campaign here on THLG, and I wanted to give you an update on where I am with my goal.

I aim to inspire people of all walks of life and at all fitness levels. I think everyone should feel welcome in our community, and should feel encouraged and inspired by others to reach their goals.

So, I thought what better way to get the message out about inspiring people than to enlist some amazing female bloggers who are also a part of the What’s Beautiful competition. They have all agreed to do SOMETHING this week to inspire others. Let’s see how many people we can reach and keep the inspiration going. Pass it on!

“I will get four people to do this with me tomorrow.”

Erin Running Tall

“I will encourage as many people as I can to get up earlier at least once this week and workout!”

“I will inspire other busy mom’s to prioritize time for themselves to be healthy. I will do this not through words, but through actions.”

“My goal is to successfully complete my yoga course so that I can inspire my clients to try something new as I offer free Yoga classes over the summer.”

“I will encourage a friend to lace up and go running”

2013_06 fittest broad jump jennifer

“I will leap outside my comfort zone of fitness and encourage someone to try new things!”

“Show friends on Facebook not to be afraid of getting sweaty”

“I will encourage my step daughter to run with me”

“I will inspire my family members to make smarter, healthier choices every day this week!”

One simple act of inspiration is all it could take to get someone moving! Will you help me pass it on? If YOU need encouragement or inspiration be sure to visit one of these ladies’ blogs and follow their What’s Beautiful profiles. You can join the What’s Beautiful Competition, join my team, and help inspire other people!

QOTD: What is a simple way you can inspire someone this week? What about something with social media?

June Lookback 2012

Happy Saturday! I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. We are actually celebrating Bobby’s birthday with family this weekend so I will be enjoying time with them and not online as much.

Today I wanted to do a little flashback to where I was and what I was doing this time last year, the end of May/beginning of June 2012.

I was chosen by Women’s Running Magazine as a Blogger on the Run.

We had a fun Memorial Day weekend and worked in the yard, just like this year!

I got serious posting about leaking what you love

I set some goals for June.

It’s so much for for me to look back on what I was doing a year ago! It helps keep me grounded and humble, and is fun to reminisce, it doesn’t seem THAT long ago!

QOTD: What were you doing last June?

It Can Wait

Is it really that important? Too many people are getting into deadly accident because they just HAD to check that text/text while driving. Most of the time, the text is something like “ok” or even something silly that doesn’t need an answer. Not earth shattering things that have to be addressed immediately yall. I consider myself a very safe driver, but there is absolutely nothing I can do if someone else out there driving decides to do something stupid. Over 100,000 crashes a year involve drivers who are texting!

I am asking you all to take the It Can Wait pledge with me to not text and drive. The pledge states “no text message, email, website or video is worth the risk of endangering my life or the lives of others on the road.” Amen.

If you go to the website, you will see it’s easy to take the pledge and you can even share a personal story if you would like. There is also a badge you can download and put on a blog, etc. You can also use the #itcanwait hashtag when sharing on Twitter that you made the pledge!

It Can Wait Pledge Logo

Take the pledge, then put the logo up on your site. I am pinning it so you can save it from Pinterest!

QOTD: Did you take the pledge? I would love to know!

Weekend Ramblings: March Edition

Good morning! Today I am running the Crescent City Classic 10k in New Orleans. It is only my second 10k, with my first being the same race back in 2009, so I am excited! We will also be spending Easter weekend with the fam, and I am excited to see them as well. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facbook as I will be updating those accounts with all the race day fun!

1.) Be sure to check out my new “runDisney” page on the top menu bar. It has been a work in progress and will continue to be, but now you can see all of my runDisney posts in one place.

2.) Join in my Challenge Loop April cross training challenge! It’s easy and free to sign up, and you can win really cool prizes. What do you have to lose?

3.) Happy Easter weekend! This weekend is super important to me, and holds very special meaning. I will be a bit more scarce on social media as I spend time with my family and time at church, reflecting on what the meaning of this special day is tomorrow.

4.) I have a fun runDisney post going up on Monday with some insider information so be sure to come back and check it out!

QOTD: Will you be doing anything special this weekend?

How to Get More Blog Readers

After the post I wrote about starting your own blog, I had a lot of questions along the lines of “ok, I started my blog, but how do I get readers?” Great question. Keep in mind it won’t happen overnight. The numbers I used to get excited about for a whole day on my blog are now what I get in an hour. But it took time, and lots of hard work. Here are a few simple things you can do to start building your pageviews.

1.) Pinterest Pin It Button for Images. Pinterest is a great way to get traffic, but you have to use it effectively. That is a whole other post in and of itself, but this free WordPress plugin puts a pin it button on your picture when you hover over it (like on my blog) so readers can pin any photo on your post.

2.) Comment on Other People’s Blogs. While you are sitting around waiting for a blog comment…so is everyone else. So take some initiative, and go comment on some blogs! I try to hit at least 5 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon/evening, more if time allows. Also I try to read NEW blogs and mix them in with old favorites. You will start to see people clicking over to your site from a comment you wrote on another blog!

3.) Interact with your readers. No one wants to feel like they are talking to an empty void, so try and reply to comments when you can.

4.) Be active on Twitter. I avoided Twitter like the plague when I was first blogging because I didn’t understand it, but now it’s my preferred form of social media and I get a ton of pageviews from it daily. Don’t just talk about your stuff, but engage in conversation with other people and make some friends! Also, twitter chats are a great way to get exposure, more followers, and readers.

5.) Host a giveaway. This may cost you a little money, but could be worth it. You may even be able to get someone to donate a product. Put a post up announcing your giveaway and have people enter, and share about the giveaway as an additional entry. That way, you get extra exposure! (I use Rafflecoptor, so easy!)

6.) Write a guest post. A lot of bloggers will put out a call on their blog or on their Twitter or Facebook asking for guest posters. This is a great opportunity for you to be seen by new readers and get exposure on a more experienced blog. It takes a little time to write that extra post, but is definitely worth it if you are guest posting on more known blogs!

7.) Sprinkle in other forms of social media.  There are so many to choose from. Instagram, YouTube, Periscope, Facebook, etc. are all great ones to get involved with to make new friends and get new followers.

don’t forget, I highly recommend becoming self hosted. I use Bluehost, and WordPress is free through them, and the prices are very very reasonable, and it is pretty user friendly. Click the image below for more info:

QOTD: What is your best tip for getting more pageviews on your blog?

Friday Randoms

TGIF! This week flew by, and I still have so much to do! Funny how some weeks drag on while I don’t know where others went! My mom is coming to hang out with me today so I won’t be around as much as I usually am, but I have a few “little of this little of that” things to share with you today. Have a great one!

1.) You may have noticed on my left sidebar that I have been a Bulu Box ambassador for a month or so. They are such a great company to work with. Did you know that in addition to the regular monthly box you can get, that there is now also a weight loss box option? Also, if you sign up for a 6 month supply (regularly $60) you get $10 off with my discount code so only $50 for 6 months of a box on your door step every month of new fun samples to try. Not sure you are ready to commit to 6 months? Use the code for one FREE BOX! If you love it, go back then order the 6 month supply. You must go through the following link and use code  BULUGAN250 at checkout using THIS LINK.

2.) My friend Brian at Digital running is hosting an interstate challenge and it rewards participants with the first ever Digital Running Interstate Challenge Medal for completing a half marathon or a marathon in two different states during 2013.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Sign up for the challenge.
  2. Run a marathon or a half marathon in two different states between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.
  3. Log your races here at digitalrunning.com.
  4. We’ll verify the results you’ve reported with the official race results.
  5. We’ll send your medal once we’ve verified that you’ve completed the challenge.

What a great incentive just to run two races in two states! The cost is only $15.00, so sign up now. I will be doing the challenge!

3.) You have probably heard that Google Reader will be no more come this summer. There are a few options that people have found to help transition them smoothly to another reader, and I will be using Feedly. Check it out! Don’t forget to do something with your reader before July or you will be stuck!

4.) Verizon has asked me back to be an ambassador again! This will be my third round, and I can’t wait to see what device I get next. You can see posts on my current verizon toys below:

Still Running With Sass

I have thought about how I would word this post over and over for the past couple of months. Let me preface by saying I hate change. It has always been a flaw of mine, as I am sentimental and very much a lover of routine. I am learning that sometimes change is good, and required for growth.

When I started writing Running With Sass over three years ago, I never in my craziest dreams would have imagined it would turn into what it is now. A place for me to share my thoughts, experiences, and loves with a wonderful community of readers and like minded people. Something so important to me I would call it “my baby”, and work every day to make it better than the day before. As my blog grew and changed, I did as well. It came to my attention about six months ago that some change may be beneficial, but I quickly dismissed those thoughts. However, they kept creeping in over and over and I couldn’t keep my mind off of them. This was when I knew it was time to step out of my comfort zone and make some changes.

It is said that with great risk comes great reward, and boy am I taking a huge risk. My anxiety level has been through the roof the closer I got to launch date, and I am still petrified that things won’t go as planned. However, no one ever said growth and change would be easy. With that being said, I am so pleased to announce my “new” blog: Through Heather’s Looking Glass. If you remember ANY portion of this long post, I want you to remember one thing: I’m still me. I may have a new name and URL, but I am still Heather, I am still running with sass. You can even still call me that if you want. Smile I have ZERO intention of changing who I am, or my writing style.

Ok, so why the change? Basically, I wanted my name to fit with what I was already doing. Yes, my blog name was Running With Sass, but I blogged a little about EVERYTHING from travel, to Disney, to my family, to motivation and my faith. However, I realized most people looking to read up on those other non-fitness topics were not very likely to come to a blog called “Running With Sass”. I discovered I had unintentionally pigeon-holed myself and wanted the freedom to pursue a wider audience and more opportunities as I grow and change as a person.

Please note I will ALWAYS have a huge focus on running, health, and fitness. I have plenty of races on my calendar for the year, and don’t plan to take my focus off something that is such a huge part of my life. However, you may see a few more “sprinkles” of other things here and there on the blog. If all you want to read about is running, that is totally cool, no hard feelings. You can simply click the coral-colored word “running” up in my header and you will be taken to all of my running posts in chronological order.

So why Through Heather’s Looking Glass? The lovely Jen helped me come up with the name, and I love it. I still wanted to include “sass” somewhere in my tagline to never forget where I started. I think it all has a nice ring to it when said together. I wanted a name that was generic enough that I could blog about anything, but also gave a nod to Disney (Alice in Wonderland anyone?) which is a HUGE love of mine, and I also love the double meaning. This blog is the world according to me, how I see things through MY looking glass.

You can still type in “runningwithsass.com” to get here, however I recommend getting used to the idea of either “heatherslookingglass.com” or “heatherslookingglass.com” (all three will redirect here). I will be changing over my names on Twitter, Facebook, etc. too so be on the lookout for that as well. I will also be updating some of my pages, but these things take lots of time. Take a look around, I hope you like the new look!

In closing, I would be lying if I didn’t say I was a little sad. I feel like Running With Sass has been my identity for over three years. When I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of you, I typically don’t hear “look it’s Heather!” It’s usually “look it’s running with sass!” Even though this is the same blog with the same posts, it almost feels like I am saying goodbye to an old friend. I will be forever grateful for the opportunities RWS gave to me, but I also feel it would be foolish to not let the natural process of growth and change take place. I am also so excited about the future, and about where my new name could potentially take me. I hope you will stick around, it’s going to be quite the adventure!

Thank you all so much for your loyalty, understanding, and support. I wouldn’t be anywhere without you, my wonderful readers. <3

QOTD: So….thoughts?

* I couldn’t have done this without the awesomeness of Rita at Blog Genie. She was excellent to work with, highly recommended! I am forever grateful.

Number 19

This Princess Rapunzel ran a great race yesterday. Despite the humidity and running the 5k the day before, I still managed to pull out a PR and had a great time running with Jen. I can’t wait to share the whole story with you, it is a race I won’t ever forget.

For now, I am going to enjoy my last day in Disney with my family before returning to the real world. Thanks to everyone for the support and encouragement!

Disney Day #3 and Splitsville

Good morning! I wanted to fill you in a bit of what I have been doing the past couple of days. Yesterday was the meet up, so there will be a post on that later. However, on Thursday, I had a blast as well. I had some work to do in the morning until after lunch, and then Jen arrived via Magical Express in the early afternoon.

photo 211

We grabbed some lunch at The Mara at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and did a lot of catching up. Then we wandered around the hotel before getting ready for a blogger meet up at Splitsville wherenwe had a blast. Splitsville is awesome. (I will be writing a post later specifically on this cool place.) I am so glad they hosted the party there, and we got a chance to check out this new vanue in Downtown Disney. There is a great upstairs patio where we hung out, ate, drank, and got to know each other.

photo (30)

The balcony has sweeping views of Downtown Disney, and the weather was prefect for a night of fun.

photo (31)

The drinks at this place are pretty epic. We started out with a snickertini. So chocolaty and good!

photo (32)

Then we tried the Birthday Cake martini. Holy yum. It was amazing. If you like sweet drinks this is a must do. You won’t be disappointed, the rim even had sprinkles on it!

photo (33)

Splitsville was a great host and they were super attentive. Not only were the drinks good, but the food is out of this world. They have an extensive menu including sushi! We had some killer nachos and pizza with our drinks and I think I ate half the plate. I can’t wait to write another post for you guys about Splitsville, I have some amazing photos to share as well as info for visiting with your friends and family. Be sure to follow them on Twitter to see what Splitsville is all about!

QOTD: Favorite martini flavor? Thoughts on Splistville?
