runDisney Disneyland Half Marathon Registration

It’s finally time to register for the runDisney Disneyland half marathon! Today, at noon EST, you can sign up at rundisney.com to take part in this amazing weekend. This is one of my favorite races, and the first time I ever visited Disneyland was when I ran it in 2012. I had hoped to be able to come back for 2015, but my money tree hasn’t started producing anything yet. Smile

However I am stoked to let you in on a few details that have been released and get you pumped up for registration day! This particular year is a special one, because it’s the 10th anniversary of the race. As if runDisney medals weren’t cool enough, there will be a special commemorative 10 year one placed around your neck after you cross the finish line.

Also, there will be a special party, see below, taken from the official press release:

“… a special Disneyland Half Marathon Annual party.  This private, ticketed event, held Thursday evening Sept 3, will give guests access to select attractions, Disney entertainment and character meet & greets in Disneyland Park West Side.”

How fun! Oh, you need even more to celebrate? How about the newly-announced 60th Anniversary Diamond Celebration? The special party will offer an exclusive viewing of the new “Paint the Night” parade!

This weekend promises to be jam packed with fun from the health and fitness expo, to the kids races, and the 5k, 10k, and half marathon. Also, I DARE you to sign up for the Dumbo Double Dare race challenge!

Friday Flashback: September 2013

It’s time for another Friday Flashback! I don’t do this all the time, but sometimes it is fun to look back on what I was doing a year ago, and see how things have changed. This year it has been especially fun to look back since all of my flashbacks are from pre-pregnancy!

Last September…

I was in Disney World for work for the Earmarked Conference. I had my own room at the Contemporary (glorious) and had a great time. My boss and I went a little early and got to hang out, and we also rented a pool cabana at the Contemporary which I highly recommend if you want to splurge.

DSC_0052

I did a lot of recapping of things like the Disneyland half marathon,

058

and my visit from July to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

DSC_0749

Not to mention the Disneyland half meet up

joey fatone

There are several other recaps if you search September 2013 archives on my blog (my archive list is on the left sidebar) so if you are looking for trip reports and such that is the place to go!

So basically September was a super busy month of travel and recapping travel last year. This September…well…I didn’t go anywhere, sad times. No trips to recap, but hopefully next year! I would love to run in Disneyland again!

QOTD: What did you do last September?

Dumbo/Disneyland Half Medals 2014

How cute! runDisney Disneyland half weekend medals are out! I’m so sad I won’t be earning these this year. The Lilo and Stitch theme is super cute and I really like the ribbons on the Disneyland half and Dumbo medals.

Dumbo Sell Out

WOW! Registration for the runDisney Disneyland half marathon opened at noon yesterday and Dumbo sold out in under 45 minutes! (remember, Dumbo is the combination of the 10k and half marathon).

As of last night at 7:30 est, the Half marathon was at 99% full

the 10k was sold out

the 5k was at 92% full

and the kids races were sold out.

Unfortunately I will not be participating this year in the races (flying to California is expensive!) but I am so glad I got to experience the inaugural event with my husband.

The event weekend is again taking place over Labor day 2014. The 5k and 10k will be held on different days, as opposed to the same day like in 2013.

Disneyland Trip 2013: Sunday-Wednesday

I left off my recap with our dinner at Blue Bayou Saturday night. Sunday morning, we got up and completed the Dumbo Double Dare by running the Disneyland half marathon. After the race, we showered, ate breakfast, and headed out to Disneyland park.

027

Not gonna lie…it was REALLY hot outside, I was exhausted, and pretty miserable. After walking around a bit and realizing the lines were long for everything, we decided to go grab some lunch, take a nap, and go back to the parks that evening. We ended up in Downtown Disney at Naples and got some pizza.

028

We were both really dehydrated and drank a ton of water. I felt better after eating, but we still decided to go take a nap which was glorious. We relaxed in the room and the lounge before heading to dinner at Steakhouse 55 with Karen and Jason.

071

073

After dinner, we never ended up going back to the parks. I was falling asleep just walking through Downtown Disney, so we decided to call it a night.

Monday morning, I felt much more like a human again, and we headed to California Adventure park to take advantage of the extra magic hour. We headed straight for the single rider line of Radiator Springs Racers, and walked right on twice, and were even in the same car.

041

043

Bobby rode California Screamin a couple times, and we also rode Toy Story Mania twice.

045

We then headed over to Disneyland before it got too crowded.

047

Why hello, Dumbo!

We discovered the petting zoo, and hung out with the goats for awhile. They were cracking me up climbing up on the barrels. They all had on collars and had really cute Disney names like Bolt and Pongo.

055

054

We went back to the hotel after that to meet up with some friends from the area. Allen and Grace are somewhat of runDisney royalty. Allen is a perfect 20 WDW marathoner, and we actually met them after this year’s marathon, and they told us when we came out to Disneyland to let them know and we would go have lunch. Well, we stayed in touch over the last few months and actually made it happen!

0830ZX_0268JD

Allen and Grace with Alice

They picked us up at our hotel and took us to eat lunch, and out for amazing dessert while we heard all of Allen’s past Disney marathon stories, and about how cool it is to live so close to Disneyland. We had a great time and hope to see them again at the marathon next year!

057

After we got back to the hotel, we relaxed and got ready for an early dinner at Wine Country Trattoria in California Adventure park. We ate outside and ran into Kat and her husband again (we saw them a couple other times that day!) before riding a couple of rides.

061

062

We got to see the lights come on in Cars Land before heading over to Grizzly River Rapids.

063

Last year we were stuck on this ride for a very long time, and luckily that did NOT happen again. We went back to the room which was SO close to the ride, super nice being able to walk right over! We changed and walked over to Disneyland where we had preferred seating for the fireworks at the train station.

065

067

073

I enjoyed them, but Wishes is still my favorite show. It was bedtime for us after this, and we had one day left before going home.

Tuesday we had breakfast and went back into the parks one last time.

076

Bobby had never been on Dumbo before, so I thought it was appropriate for us to ride, and there was NO line.

079

080

We rode some of the other Fantasyland rides, as well as Indiana Jones and Pirates before eating lunch outside at Café Orleans.

086

We also ran into this cowgirl with no line. I’m telling you, the day after Labor Day is the time to go to Disneyland!

085

We wanted to spend some time at the pool, so after lunch we took the trolley back down Main Street and went to the pool at the resort.

089

090

I love the lounge chairs at the pool, they are HUGE with giant cushions on them, it’s like being on a bed. We lounged for a bit  before getting ready for dinner at Napa Rose at our hotel. But first, we hit up the lounge one last time.

093

We were given a cute little table in the corner by the fireplace at Napa Rose, and had a great server along with amazing food.

099

We took our time, as we didn’t have anywhere to be until World of Color later that night. We even had time to go ride Radiator Springs Racers one more time.

101

103

I LOVE this show, it is my favorite show in Disneyland. It’s so unique and hard to explain to people who have never seen it.

104

107

112

113

It was a great way to end our trip, and I am glad we saved it for the last night. If you ever have the chance to go to Disneyland, don’t miss World of Color. They even have fastpasses for it!

Thanks for reading along about my trip, can’t wait to share the next one with you!

Disneyland Half Marathon 2013

I spent my Labor Day weekend running the happiest race on earth.

Dumbo double dare runDisney

The inaugural runDisney Dumbo Double Dare at the Disneyland resort in California to be exact! This race consisted of the Disneyland 10k on Saturday, followed by the Disneyland half marathon on Sunday for a total of 19.3 miles.

For the half marathon, I knew I wanted to dress up and have a great time on the race course. So, why not dress as Dumbo, the elephant who the event was named after?

photo (19)

The morning of the race, Bobby and I headed down just before 5:00 to get into our coral. There were SO many people out, and the corals seemed to stretch on forever down the road. We hopped into ours and waited for the race to begin.

photo (3)

735630-1006-0050s

It was a warm morning again, but SLIGHTLY less humid than the morning of the 10k. The first couple of miles were uneventful until we headed into Disney’s California Adventure Park. I LOVE World of Color, and was excited to see this again:

photo (4)

We continued on in the dark through Cars Land, and waved at the characters. I was pouring sweat by this point and regretting my decision of wearing pigtails. They were sticking to me and making me even more hot.

photo (5)

We decided to stop for a picture with Mike and Sulley from Monster’s Inc. Since I skipped them the day before at the 10k.

We ran through more of DCA park, before heading across into Disneyland.

734816-1009-0026s

Peter and Wendy were out to wish us good luck, and I nearly had to pick Bobby up off the ground. He thinks he’s so funny. You can see my “glisten” in this photo ha.

Captain Hook and Mr. Smee were busy riding the carousel, but did wave at us. We then stopped for a quick pic with the Dumbo ride, which I made Bobby ride with me later in the trip. Hehe.

I loved running through the castle again, and even did some leaping for the camera. It always makes for interesting pictures!

I love this next one, you can see just how much fun I was having. Disneyland is a magical place to run for sure.

In Frontierland, I caught up with my buddy Joe from The Marathon Show and we talked about the LSU game the night before (geaux Tigers)!

Sadly, before I knew it, we were out onto the roads. Boo. It was getting very warm, and we still had a long way to go. Thankfully, there was a lot of entertainment on the course such as bands, cheerleaders, and dancers.

Who can forget the rows and rows of classic cars. (So glad I had my sunglasses).

Our goal was to make it to Angel Stadium. Once we got out of there we knew it was about a 5k left. Easy peasy. The roar of the crowd did not disappoint, and we made it out the other side. A huge thanks to the boy and girl scouts for cheering!

More road running in the sun, but getting closer!

Ok, so here is a funny story. (TMI alert) Bobby and I both had some chaffing issues this race. Me because the shirt I had made was NOT a tech shirt. It’s southern California for crying out loud, it’s not supposed to be hot and humid, so I thought I would be on in a cotton shirt. Well let’s just say my shirt got SO soaked and soaked through my bra and led to some major chaffing, like burning and excruciating pain from mile 9 on. Also, I was wearing body glide but I guess because I was literally drenched it came off.  I got to where I was using one hand to hold my shirt and bra away from my skin it was hurting so badly. I know. That’s not funny, but the rest of the story is. Bobby has this favorite shirt that you see him wearing for the race. He likes it because it’s soft and doesn’t cause any nipple chafing issues for him. Well, a little bit before I started chafing he started chaffing too. Only ting is HE can take his shirt off to stop his problem and I of course couldn’t. He was so confused as to why he was chaffing because he wears that shirt all the time.

Well, we figured out later back at the hotel that it was because he was wearing MY SHIRT! His is a large, mine is a small, but the shirt is HUGE. I even blogged about how big it was two years ago when I got it. So while it somehow fit him, it was tighter than his other once, hence the chafing. We realized it because he pulled the shirt out of his suitcase and he was confused because he thought he had just worn it!

734872-1078-0047s

734872-1078-0048s

Pretty soon we caught up with this dude and chatted for a bit. He was looking strong and still smiling!

Dl half joey

I was so happy to see the mile 12 sign, we were almost home! By this time every ounce of my clothing was drenched. The running skirt I had on under my tutu was so wet and heavy that it started sagging and I kept having to pull it up. I am happy to report that my KT Tape stayed put though!

734833-1094-0007s

I love rounding that last corner by the Disneyland Hotel and seeing the finish line. It’s a beautiful thing.

734839-1129-0047s

734839-1129-0049s

Bobby is laughing in the next shot because Carissa announced us as we got close and mentioned that Bobby was sporting his “man shirt”. I would later tell her the story of WHY he wasn’t wearing his shirt which made it even funnier.

734839-1130-0001s

734839-1130-0002s

We did it! We crossed in 2:34, respectable for the amount of times we stood in line for photos, stopped to take photos and video, and even a bathroom stop.

YAY DUMBO! We did it!

photo (18)

We also got our coast to coast medals, three new pieces of bling in one day. I’ll take it! We headed over to grab some food by the finish line and ran into some friends.

I was pretty tired and still soaking wet and ready for a shower, so we headed back to the hotel, so sad that the race weekend was officially over. I am so proud of my bling and had a great time running Disney!

Weekly Workout Recap: August Week 3 2013

Good morning! What a crazy week.

20130820-1O5A9726-54-(ZF-8198-64045-1-009)

I ended it yesterday with a nice long afternoon nap. My body definitely needed it! While the bottom of my foot isn’t completely healed, it is doing MUCH better than last week. I think race tapering has helped as well as ice and ibuprofen.

If you have been reading along you know this week was a big week for me visiting Baltimore and the Under Armour headquarters. I did two tough workouts while I was there as well as my workouts at home. Take a look:

Sunday: rest

Monday: 3 mile run, legs and abs

Tuesday: circuit workout with Under Armour trainer

Wednesday: Yoga at the four seasons on the roof (amazing!)

Thursday: rest

Friday: one hour stationary bike, triceps

Saturday: 5 mile run

Let me just say, I am STILL sore from my workouts at UA. They kicked my butt and reminded me of muscles I need to work out more often.

UA skirt

Loving my new UA skirt and mesh top. So breathable!

Today is ONE WEEK from the Disneyland half marathon/finish of Dumbo Double Dare, so I will be taking it super easy. I may run 3 on Monday then 1 or 2 on Wednesday, but that’s it for running. I will probably lift on Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday will be my last workout (besides walking around the parks) I am so excited, can’t wait to go!

QOTD: What do your workouts look like the week of a race or event?

Tips for Running the runDisney Disneyland Half Marathon

The runDisney Disneyland half marathon is just around the corner, and I have gotten several questions from readers asking for help with this race.

Disneyland half marathon tips

I know for a lot of runners, it is their first time going out to California for runDisney, and it is a whole different animal than running runDisney on the east coast. So, I have compiled some tips that I hope will help you throughout your race weekend:

1.) Time change: I will be coming from central time, and I know a lot of runners will be coming form eastern. This is SUCH a blessing! As you probably know, runDisney races start very early in the morning, and east coast races require you to get on busses even earlier. When I wake up at 4:00 am, my brain will think it’s 6:00. Totally doable and not as dreaded. But keep the time change in mind for meals and bedtimes so you don’t end up like me at 9:00 pm when my body thought it was 11:00.

DSC_0690

2.) Walking to race: Coupled with the time change, another amazing thing about the west coast races is that you don’t have to walk forever to get to your corral. It is SUCH a huge plus to stay on property or at a close good neighbor hotel. Last year, we were at the Grand Californian and it was so easy to just walk downstairs, across Downtown Disney, and into the starting area. I loved it. We waited in our room as long as we could so there was no need to even use the port-o-potties at the starting line. HUGE plus!

photo (6)

Bobby and I were happy campers in our corral before the race in 2012.

3.) Breakfast: Last year, I noticed a couple of places in Downtown Disney had signs out in the days before the race saying they planned to be open early in the morning so runners could grab breakfast (I think Jamba Juice was the one I noticed). If you plan to go this route, remember thousands of other runners may be doing the same so get there early. Another alternative (what we did) is to go to the counter service location at your resort if you are staying onsite, and grab food for breakfast the day before. I know our hotel had fruit and yogurt parfaits that were perfect for us. We stored them in our room refrigerator and it worked out well race morning.

DSC_0628

I also may have had a pre-race cookie…

4.) Know the Course: Be sure to study the course map for the race. Unlike east coast races, you enter and exit the parks at the very beginning of the Disneyland half, and then are out on the road. (Characters are ONLY inside the parks so don’t “wait” for the next ones to take photos, because before you know it you will be out on the road!). My favorite part was running through the stadium toward the end of the race, so have your camera ready for that as well!

photo (19)

5.) Finish line: Just like at the east coast races, there will be a finishers area where you can meet up with your family and friends after the race. Don’t forget to plan out a meeting time and spot with them before the race. Cell service was very spotty for me last year with so many people in one place!

photo (43)

6.) Pre Race Dinner: There are a lot of great options for a pre race dinner. I love that for on site guests, you have Downtown Disney literally right outside your door. Last year we went to the ESPN Zone restaurant because LSU was playing that night. It was unfortunately just so so as far as food goes. There are some great places such as Earl of Sandwich, Storytellers at the Grand Californian, and if you are craving pizza pre-race there is Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria in Downtown Disney. I know several people will also be attending the Pasta in the Park party hosted by runDisney.

DSC_0625

We love Storyteller’s buffet!

7.) Expo: I suggest getting to the expo on Friday if you can swing it. It opens at 10:00 at the Disneyland Hotel. Again, perk of staying onsite, it’s an easy walk there and back to your room to put away your things before going to play in the parks. Don’t forget if you are participating in the coast to coast challenge to get your wristband at the expo! Last year, they had us go downstairs to get our bibs then upstairs to the expo floor to shop!

DSC_0593

8.) Weather: This southern girl was STOKED to run in no humidity California. Oh, to be able to train in this type of weather year round. Must be wonderful! Anyway, Be mindful of the weather the day before and morning of the race. Layer if necessary, and wear sunglasses. There was one long stretch where we made a turn out onto a road and we were looking RIGHT into the rising sun. It was blinding and I am so glad I had my shades.

DL9

Also, don’t forget to check out the runDisney packing list vlog I created to help fill your suitcase with everything you need for the race.

DSC_0811

QOTD: Any other tips you would add? Who is excited! Who is getting a coast to coast medal?
