Beat the Heat + My Race Ragz Rocks!

June 26, 2012 | fashion, fitness, running, tips, Uncategorized

I was honored to be asked to be the featured blogger in the My Race Ragz newsletter this month. Some of you who already get the newsletter probably saw my face in your inbox yesterday morning, but in case you missed it, you can see the write up here.  By the way, if you would like to sign up for the monthly newsletter, it’s so easy, just go here and enter in a bit of information!

In my little interview, I was asked about ways to heat the heat during summer running. This is so appropriate being I live one of the hottest, most humid parts of the country so I kind of have these tips mastered! Here are the tips I gave:

Tips for staying safe while running in the summer / heat.

Running in the heat is no joke, and it is important to stay safe and pay attention to the weather. My best tips for running in the heat include:

  1. Run early in the morning or late at night to avoid the hottest and sunniest parts of the day.
  2. Hydrate hydrate hydrate before, during, and after your run.
  3. Slather on the SPF, and I always wear a visor to keep the sun off my face in the summer months.
  4. Put a wet washcloth in the freezer, and then carry it with you on your run to keep you cool
  5. Be sure to replace not only water, but salt and electrolytes. Gatorade, nuun, and coconut water are my favorite go to’s.
  6. Be realistic. Your pace is going to drop, and that’s ok! Have realistic goals for your summer runs
  7. Most importantly, listen to your body. If you get dizzy or lightheaded, stop running, and find some shade ASAP. Better to be safe than sorry!

I was also asked about some races I am running this fall and my goals for them:

Meet Heather from Running With Sass.  She’s an avid runner and now a My Race Ragz sportin’ fashionista.

Here’s what we asked Heather:

What are your racing goals for 2012?

I have a couple of race goals for the rest of 2012. I would love to run a sub 2:00 half marathon for one, but I also have a goal of staying injury free. I have struggled with several running injuries that have hampered my ability to reach my goals, so I am trying to take really good care of my body so that doesn’t happen! I also also have a goal of having FUN with every race. Running is a privilege and I don’t want to take it for granted.

What races are you signed up for over the summer / fall?

Living in the deep south, there are not many races going on in the summer. I am signed up for the Disneyland half marathon in September, the Gulf coast half marathon in October, and Disney’s Wine and Dine half marathon in November. But my “big race” is goofy’s race and a half challenge in January of 2013! Running a half marathon Saturday and a full on Sunday is so scary to me, but I am excited!

THANKS My Race Ragz for featuring me in your newsletter! (In case anyone missed my review of the awesome shirt I got from them you can check it out here).

QOTD: Do you have any other tips for staying safe while running/beating the heat this summer?

Great tips. I ran last night and it was 103. I know some people think I’m bonkers of course. But you have to acclimate yourself, hydrate, AND take it slower. Pay attention to your body and if you start feeling the slightest bit off, stop!

I’ve been an on and off runner for years, but just picked it back up again a few weeks ago, I’m loving it, but it seems I have to get out earlier and earlier to beat that dang it. I’m okay with that, but GAH! I can’t stand the humidity. Wish it had an off switch.
    Congrats on being featured!

I leave a spray bottle in my room to spray on my face when it’s hot!

Looks like you have all the tips covered. One that I have seen (never tried) around is the “cold” water trick. Fill your watre bottle about half way (with no lid on, I think) and place it in the freezer overnight. Then fill it up before you leave. As you run, it will keep your drink cold and eventually thaw to a full bottle of hydration… sounds like a solid idea.

A friend of mine shared the same tip as Pavement Runner’s…fill it half way, freeze it, and fill it when you go to run. I have to try it.

And I’ve been bad about the SPF. I’ve got a MAJOR tan going now with all this half training…I need to start wearing it.

    Great interview!!!

I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just o I used to think dairy-free desserts were “just okay.” Like, fine in a pinch… but never something I craved. 👀

But then this little picnic happened—just me, my girl, and a sweet treat we both loved enough to fight over the last bite. 😅

We’ve been trying to be more mindful with food choices lately (especially with summer travel coming up), and I grabbed these So Delicious treats at Kroger kind of on a whim. The new packaging caught my eye, but it was the taste that totally surprised us. Creamy. Indulgent. No weird aftertaste. And no, we’re not fully dairy-free—and we still loved them.

It’s one of those little swaps that doesn’t feel like giving anything up.

And that? That’s a win for both of us. ✨@So_Delicious

🚨 Homeschool decision!! If you have been aroun 🚨 Homeschool decision!!

If you have been around here since Christmas time, then you know we pulled Emma Kate out of her private school after the first semester and put her in a hybrid homeschool for the spring. The main reason being we wanted more absences than the school allowed.

What is a hybrid? In our case, she went to a school all day 3 days a week, and we taught her at home two days a week.

It seemed like the best of both worlds, not having absences count since we were also her teachers, being able to stay home some, sleep in, and travel.

Well, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. For one, the school we sent her to ended up not being what we thought. We were told being absent wouldn’t be a problem, but it became clear very early on her teacher was not a fan and she was not kind or accommodating to Emma Kate. There’s a lot of other reasons we didn’t blown the school I won’t go into. (If you are local and considering hybrid feel free to dm me and I will share my concerns and grievances.)

Teaching your kid is hard. There were lots of tears and frustrations, and she got bored since Bobby and I also work from home/I’m not a stay at hoke mom. We couldn’t just sit with her all day and teach her with our crazy long hours owning two businesses.

It was tough to keep a schedule and while getting to travel a lot was great, she didn’t thrive on not having a routine and struggled with the randomness of everything.

She is also a very social only child who missed her friends and also wants to play sports for her school.

In the end while there were a lot of pros to hybrid homeschool, the cons outweighed them for us so we are returning to her old school in the fall.

Am I glad we did it? Yes! I always would have wondered otherwise and now we know. We will still be pulling her out of school some to travel in the fall, just not as much.

If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments below and I will be happy to answer the best I can! 🩷
