The Beach Club

A few of you have asked me via e-mail about the place we like to stay at the beach. Growing up, we always went to Destin, FL and have a favorite spot, which we stayed in last summer when Bobby had to take some legal classes to keep his law license current. But, we have also gone to another beach a few times, and really love it because it’s two hours from our house, The Beach Club. This beautiful place is just outside of Gulf shores in a more secluded area called Fort Morgan.

The last time Bobby and I were here was in September of 2009 for a long weekend. We had a great one bedroom condo with an amazing view of the beach.

It was nice to be there in the off season when it wasn’t crowded at all. I know it will be a little bit cooler this time around but really, we are just wanting to get away so we don’t really care.

DSC00621

We really like how “off the beaten path” this place is. They also have free dvd rentals and a few different dining options. We of course will be hitting up the gym and running on the beach!

When we go to the beach, we like having a condo, so we can bring a lot of our own food. it makes it healthier and cheaper!

Plus we really love sitting on the balcony eating breakfast.

Or a late night snack!

Hopefully it will be warm enough to hit up the pool, but they have an indoor one too if it’s not.

So ready to go! Hurry up week!

QOTD: Where is your favorite beach spot?

Mental Break

Ever just feel like you need a little mental break? Bobby and I are very much feeling that way right now! Just when you think you are done handling a certain situation, a BIG one mind you…one lasting almost a year and a half…it creeps back up when you least expect it. Blah.

My parents are currently at the beach, and my mom sent me these two gorgeous pictures:

Sigh. Gorgeous.

So, we are thinking we may take a spontaneous early Valentine’s Day-we-need-to-get-the-heck-out-of-town-before-we-lose-it trip next weekend. I love and miss the beach, and our favorite spot is only two hours away, so we may just go for it. I think I need to take my own advice (number 5) on my blog post about things not going as planned!

Sometimes, don’t you just wish you could snap your fingers, go back in time, and change something that would avoid a WHOLE lot of future drama? Oh boy do I ever with this one! (Nothing I did…preventing someone else from doing something stupid basically.)

Sorry to be less than stoked today guys, I try to always look for the positive and in a situation and make lemonade out of lemons, but trust me, this one is a toughie.

I love y’all and hope you have a fabulous weekend. I am heading out to run six miles with Bobby.

QOTD: If you could get away for the weekend, where would you go?

Passionate

You can tell when you are reading an article or blog written by a person passionate about their subject matter. The joy and excitement overflow onto the page, and is woven into each sentence or idea. Having a desire to share, motivate, and inspire is evident in their work, making each new story exciting to read.  It’s not just about writing, but about the fire that burns within the author, desiring to get their point across to help inform and share with others. Running With Sass is my baby, and I deeply enjoy sharing stories, tips, and motivation with my readers everyday. To be able to do so on an even larger scale would be a dream come true.

True, I am just an average girl, but that is part of my draw. I attract a lot of readers that are new runners, bloggers, and those just starting out on their fitness journey. I have received countless e-mails from readers thanking me for being real and honest, and for showing them that anyone can be fit and healthy.  They enjoy my message of not having to be the fastest, the strongest, or the best…but just striving to be the greatest version of themselves.

Growing up, I played multiple sports, and even moved on to coaching after college. I have coached basketball at the middle school level, and volleyball at the high school varsity (6A) level. I am very knowledgeable of both sports, and fitness in general. Running is my most recent passion of three years, and I recently have added weight lifting and yoga to my always growing fitness practices.

My job allows me to travel to several races throughout the year, so I believe having a fresh perspective on the health and fitness of different cities would be a great benefit to readers. Not only have I learned a lot working at health and fitness expos, but also in partnering with several companies to review and share their products.

Other passions of mine include putting a stop to childhood obesity, and furthering cancer research. I shared my thoughts and experience in a vlog last month on the matter of childhood obesity. As a former teacher, it broke my heart to see so many children struggle with their weight and be bullied by other students.

Don’t forget about my 6 second “fail” that went along with the above vlog. Oops! At least I can laugh at myself, right? (I’m saying “fail” at the end of the video).

I also love social media, and spend a lot of time each day interacting on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, as well as several forums, message boards and other blogs. I have a large twitter following, and a fan page for my blog on Facebook as well as a personal Facebook page. Participating in Twitter chats and social media conversations is something I really enjoy. Meeting new people, reaching out and making friends is an encouragement and inspiration.

My mother is a stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. She is an amazing woman with a lot of fight, and a great inspiration to many. I have learned so much watching her, and as a family we have all taken steps towards a more healthy lifestyle to help prevent certain types of cancer. My husband and I ran a half marathon this fall with Team in Training benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. It was a great experience and I was thrilled to be a part of raising money for cancer research and treatment.

In closing, I think the name of my blog says it all. Yes I run, and yes I try to live an active, healthy life…but I do it all with a touch of sass. Who says healthy living and fitness have to be boring and bland? Spicing up your fitness and health as well as your life in general, can help you to be a success story. I have faced obstacles, criticism, injuries, mental defeats, and trials. Through it all, my husband and I are dedicated to a healthy and fit lifestyle, against all odds.

Below is a video I put together last summer documenting my healthy living journey. I hope you enjoy following along.

QOTD: What are you passionate about?

2012. Game On.

Happy New Year’s Eve eve! This short week is nice huh? Next week will be short too….so many reasons to love the holidays! We had a busy weekend planned, but a very fun one. But let’s back track. Yesterday, I did some cleaning because my aunt and cousin were coming over. I met them for lunch and then they wanted to come see my house. We girl talked for a while before they left. They Bobby and I hit the gym after he got home from work. I am getting really excited about the prospect of running in a week’s time!

DSC_1065

Ok, so let’s talk “resolutions.” I have some mixed feelings about these babies. On one hand, I think it’s GREAT to make plans and goals for the next year. On the other hand, it can easily set you up for failure, and also, why wait until a new year, why not start now?

So, I have decided instead of having resolutions, I will continue to have “mini goals” like I did last year, and also to have something in life I want to “work on.” I feel that if I leave it vague and obscure, I can’t very easily “fail.” I shared with you yesterday that my word for 2012 is determination. This doesn’t have any “specifics” and can mean (and does mean) a lot of different things to me.

What the heck am I saying? For instance…I can decide one day in February “I am determined to paint the rest of our fence, gosh darn it!” See? I can make things up as I go, al falling under the category of working on my determination. I will be picking and choosing things as they happen, and then celebrate the victories afterwards.

DSC_0708

With THAT being said, we also have a tradition around our house where we write out goals for the next year and put them in our stocking for safekeeping. Then, the next Christmas when we pull out the decorations, we can look at out goals for the past year. It’s really fun! So, I will continue to do this for the sake of tradition and fun and mainly to see how my goals and life change over the years.  These are not “ohmygoshIhavetodothisorelse” kind of goals…just fun things it would be nice to see happen that year. It is good for reflection I think.

DSC_0682

SO….I am DETERMIND to make 2012 a great year, whatever that may mean each month. I will let you know how it goes. Game on 2012.

QOTD: How do you feel about resolutions? Do you have any?

My 2011 Year In Review

It is a bit overwhelming for me to think of things in terms of an entire year. So many big (and little) things happened this year in my life. Just going back through my posts from this past year has had me laughing and crying all at the same time. Then I re-read my 2010 recap. Whew. 2010 was a particularly tough year, you can check out it’s recap as well.

DSC_1610

If I had to describe 2011 in one word, it would be change. Here are just a few changes that took place this past year:

-Bobby and I moved 3 hours away to a new city, a new home, and he took a new job.

I got a job with Running Skirts

– We ended a very long battle with some of Bobby’s family that led to some personal changes

– My sister moved to Houston

I got injured, twice, and now haven’t run in 6 weeks and have had to change some racing plans because of it.

Some other fun things happened in 2011 like….

I ran a MARATHON!

I ran five half marathons and six 5k’s

– I was on the cover of New Orleans Fit Magazine

-I was named a FitFluential Ambassador

– I turned 26 years old

-I celebrated my 4th wedding anniversary with Bobby

DSC_1825

Some of the things that happened this year are not things I wanted. But, over the years I have learned that’s just how life goes. I am such a planner…I have all of these visions and dreams for my life, but I have to remember that I won’t always get my way…that’s not the way God works. The important thing is having faith that on the other side of the valley, there will be a mountaintop (or at least some nice, smooth road!) Life isn’t always easy, but there are plenty of good times to celebrate. Not to mention, as much as I hate to admit this, I learn and grow the most in the tough times.

DSC_0354

It’s funny, to look back sometimes. When you are in a particular moment, it is so easy to get distracted and frustrated with the hand you are dealt. Then, later on when there is a solution to your problem or things get easier, there tends to be this “now why did I get so upset over that? See, it’s over, and now something good has happened/come of it!” moment. It’s difficult sometimes, but I try to remember that there is a reason for the tough times, and hopefully one day I can look back on them and see the paths that I have taken (and sometimes going off road!) and how they have led to a greater understanding of my life.

DSC_0712

2011 was a very interesting and trying year, but I know 2012 will be great no matter what. I know some things happen TO you and you can’t change them, but this year I am DETERMINED to work on the things that I can control. Yup, that’s right, my word for 2012 is determination. I get into a bad habit of halfway doing things sometimes, and then get upset when I don’t get the results I want. I am determined to try harder to accomplish my goals. No more excuses. I have to be the change to make things happen if I want to achieve things. I know I have it somewhere inside of me, I just need to dig a little.

GCH3

Thank you all so much for reading RWS this year. I love my readers so much, and truly enjoy sharing my life with you. It’s time for new beginnings, and time to make some changes. I am determined to live up to my potential in all areas of my life. Are you? Let’s go 2012. Bring it on.

Overwhelmed!

Ok so today has NOT been a good mental health day for me! We took the 5th grade on a field trip….as a teacher, field trips are very, very, stressful. I had the worst headache by the time we got back. So, I didn’t end up running and put it off till tomorrow. I took a nap when I came home and that helped.
So then I decided to try and tackle my closet. I. got. so. overwhelmed. I did a little but then I had to leave. I started looking around at how much I needed to do nd how I don’t have enough space to put everything, and I had to leave the room! Pathetic! I did take befre shots, so maybe once you see how BAD it is you will understand. I am so embarassed to post these!

AWFUL I know! How did I let it get like that! I may do some more later, but will probably wait till tomorrow. Also I have a 6 mile run planned tomorrow. Next week my plan is to do 2-3 easy runs before the race. It’s so close! I can’t wait!
