Safely Go

September 25, 2012 | blogging, health, running, tips

I love being connected to the world (and have to be for work), therefore I love my cell phone. I keep it with me at all times, much to my husband’s annoyance, and constantly check my e mail, calls, and texts. While this is fine most of the time, while I am driving it is NOT ok. Did you know it takes approximately 4.6 seconds to answer a text? That’s like driving the length of a football field….blindfolded. A million bad things could happen in that time frame

I will admit, it is very very tempting to text and drive, but it’s not safe. Also, it’s usually a very unimportant text that is coming through anyway that could wait.  Verizon has fortunately made it a bit easier for me with their new Safely Go app. (You can find it in the Google Play store under the Verizon tab)

The app sends an auto response text every time you receive a text while driving and have the app running. This idea is genius, and hopefully also helps other people realize the dangers of texting and driving. But keep in mind, this only works if the driver realizes the danger and uses the app.  There are currently 39 states that have laws about texting and driving, so let’s spread the word, and help keep our roads safe.  Also, you wouldn’t want to hit a runner or biker while texting and driving would you?

——————————-

Yesterday, Bobby and I ran 6 miles, and then went to the gym and lifted chest, tri’s, and legs. My run felt great, I feel like I am finally getting back into a groove, but still praying my foot holds up as I up my mileage! Yesterday was my first attempt at a back to back run where I doubled the mileage of day 2 (day one was 3 miles, day two 6) as I start to gear up for Goofy in January!

Want a recap of my speech/session on Social Media at Healthy Living summit? It’s up on the HLS website!

QOTD: Do you ever do two workouts in one day?

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Wireless Ambassador program and have been provided
with a wireless device and three months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the
product.

That app totally rocks! It is tempting but SOOOO not safe! I’d love to get that, have to see if AT&T has something similar! If not I’ll make one and become a millionaire thanks to you!

Genius! I’ve been a long time Verizon customer and didn’t even know about this. I’m putting it on my kid’s cell phones too so by the time they start driving the app will be a habit. Thanks!

I love 2 workouts in a day. I don’t often have the time but when I do it’s a fun way to train a little differently.

That looks like a great app. I’ll have to try it.

So glad to hear that your foot is doing well. Take care while you’re upping your mileage. I’m sure you have a plan, but it is easy to add too mich too soon when you’re feeling good.

thanks! I am being petty careful. Only running 4 X’s a week (3 last week) and cross training 2 days and lifting 3-4 days. Only upped my long run by a mile last week, and upping it by 2 this week.

That sounds like a great app! I just turn the phone to silent when I’m driving so that I don’t here the text noise and get tempted.

Haha. I get approached by these companies. Granted, I have been blogging every day for almost three years and it def. didn’t happen overnight.

That’s really awesome! great job! Any advice for those of us working up to the daily run stamina you have. I can do 3 miles no problem on a daily basis but any more than that regularly it’s a struggle.

        • Heather says

          September 26, 2012 at 7:34 am

Just very slowly work up the miles, even if you only add .25 miles at a time. Pushing yourself when it gets hard is the point when you are getting better and your body is changing. Even if you can only push for 30 extra seconds, that’s something, then next time make it one minute (or do it in terms of distance) and eventually it will turn into a mile, etc. Good luck!

That app is genius. It’s definitely tempting to look at my phone while stopped at a light or driving and it’s so dangerous. I know that but I still do it every once in a while. It’s a terrible addiction to the phone! I think that I need to get this app.

  10. Amanda @ Run Principessa says

    September 26, 2012 at 8:25 am

That app is really smart! People always get antsy when you don’t answer them fast enough, but if you’re driving they need to learn to chill out. Thanks for pointing it out to me!!

What a cool, helpful app! I’ll have to look for that once I get my phone back up and running. 🙂

And I’ve done two workouts in a day before during high school volleyball and basketball days… as well as for that monster of a race you and I competed in. And a few other times, as well. It’s exhausting, but it feels good.

    I hope you’re well!

This app sounds awesome! Do you have to have verizon to use it or does it work with other phone providers? Texting and driving is very dangerous and now I believe there is a law in place against it in the state of New York. This should also be the case with walking and texting, which can actually be just as dangerous sometimes.

Hey Heather – great write-up. Two quick comments:
1 – you don’t need to be a Verizon customer to get the app, anyone with an Android phone can download
2 – you can download more easily by just going to http://www.safely.com/go

    cheers!

thanks for the heads up. However, I was just putting in my own words the copy we were given from Verizon, which stated that Verizon launched this new app, so I would maybe let them know so they could be sure all the ambassadors know in case more people blog about it?
