GI Issues

 

I have been sick for about six weeks. I have run three half marathons in that time, been to urgent care, my regular doctor, a cardiologist, and most recently this week, a Gastrointestinal doctor. We have been trying to get to the bottom of my problems, and the result is….more testing.

A couple weeks ago I had an EKG and  echocardiogram, and also wore a holter monitor for 24 hours.

Things got worse while I was in Disney, and so now I am scheduled next week for an upper endoscopy, some lab work, and an ultrasound of my gallbladder. I am also taking Prevacid twice a day and carafate to help with my stomach. I am supposed to run a half marathon on the 9th and I am still undecided.  I may wait and see what happens next week after my procedures are completed.

All I know is I am ready for some answers and ready to feel better and get back to my regular running and workout routine. Some days I feel ok and can run just fine, and others I can barely get out of bed I feel so bad, so I just never really know.

So, anyone have these tests done before? Any words or wisdom or advice?

Thanksgiving In Pictures 2012

 

Happy Saturday! Today Bobby and I are headed out on a long run, hopefully 14-15 miles, and then hopefully decorating our Christmas tree! My camera cord is still at home but I wanted to share some phone photos I took on Thanksgiving day.

We drove to my parents Thursday morning and then my cousin and her family arrived for lunch!

We ate a great spread prepared by mom and dad, and enjoyed some awesome desserts as well (hello pumpkin pie!)

Bella was very aware of the turkey carving going on and stayed close to my dad as he got the bird ready. She was being so funny, growling and barking at him to get some scraps (which she of course did get).

Bobby and I took some Christmas card photos outside and I tried to take a photo of the picture on my camera to show you one but they are coming out blurry.

Then later in the evening my aunt and her boyfriend came over to hang out and watch football….and we ate some more. Friday morning mom and I went shopping and got a lot done/gifts bought, and we brought pizza back to the house which we ate while watching LSU beat Arkansas! I would say we have had a great weekend so far and it’s only halfway over! Hope you are all enjoying your holiday weekend, see you tomorrow.

Happy Black Friday! So who went out shopping this morning? I may be at a few stores as we speak, but more on that later. I wanted to share my Thanksgiving photos with you today but I left my camera cord at home #fail. I hope everyone had a great day with their families, and ate lots of yummy food!

1. How/why did you start blogging?

I started blogging originally to share my teaching experiences with others and connect with teachers in other parts of the world.

2. Sum up your blog in a couple of sentences.

I blog about running, reading, and teaching. Those are my passions, and I want to connect with other people who share those passions.

3. What do you wish to accomplish/achieve by blogging?

I hope to inspire others with my journey as a runner, share great books with fellow book lovers, and let other teachers know about life in my classroom.

4. What is your biggest healthy living accomplishment?

I am 5’1 and back in December 2011 had topped the scale at 163 lbs! I decided I wanted to be able to run a 5k so I told my family. My husband laughed. Yes, he laughed. That is all the motivation I needed. 🙂 I ran my 1st 5k in February 2012 and have run MANY since then. Losing weight was not my goal, but when it started falling off it sure did add to that motivation. I now weigh between 125-128 depending on how much cookies-n-cream ice cream I have devoured! 🙂

Hi friends. I’m writing this post Friday afternoon. I’m at the airport…and my flight is already delayed 40 minutes. Boo! Just so ready to be home. I hope everyone had a great week and has amazing weekend plans. Mine include sleeping, laundry, and snuggling with my puppies I haven’t seen in 14 days!

Awhile back the lovely Heidi from Banana Buzz Bomb tagged me as a liebster award winner, and I am finally getting around to filling it out! (sorry Heidi! Thanks so much for the nomination!)

Here are the questions I had to answer:

1. What’s your favorite dish?

I LOVE Mexican food! My husband knows it’s my favorite. Especially queso dip and chips. I could eat it forever. Seriously. Just that.

2. Why did you start a blog?

Like many, mine started as an accountability journal when I began my running journey, and then in evolved into what it is today and it makes me so excited!

3. If you changed your name, what would you change it to?

This is a tough one, I never really thought about it and don’t see myself as anything but a Heather! Anyone think I look like I should have a different name?

4. Why did you choose this name for your blog?

In high school my basketball coach called me sassy because my dog is named sassy and well, I guess it fit me anyway, and it kind of stuck. Then when I started running I only wanted to wear fun, cute, sassy workout clothes, so it just fit!

5. What makes you crazy?

Oh what a loaded question. Can I make a blanket statement and say stupid people? Or is that bad?

6. Which book are you reading atm? (or which magazine?)

Fitness magazine, Runner’s World, Us Weekly, Women’s running. I heart magazines.

7. What inspires you?

People overcoming incredible odds to do things really inspires me. If they can do it, I can do it too!

8. When you were a child, what did you want to be when your grew up?

It changed yearly from ballerina to teacher to veterinarian. Now some of these make me laugh.

9. What is your favorite part of blogging?

Interacting with readers and other bloggers. I never meet a stranger and love chatting with and talking to people from all over the world about a common love for fitness and blogging. It’s so much fun to hear from readers, too! Also, meeting fellow blogger friends!

11. If money was no object, where would you live and why?

I would live by my family but have a second home at the beach. I love me some beach time.

A huge thank you for all the sweet comments you left me yesterday on my three year blogiversary post. I feel so loved, and I am so sorry I have been a slacker at replying to comments, but I go home TODAY and things will hopefully go back to normal! I love Disney so much, but I will admit I am quite homesick, and ready to see my husband and my baby furry children. They probably forgot who I am by now.

I have one more seminar this morning, and then my flight leaves this afternoon. I am sure I will snooze all the way through it, as I am typing this post at midnight Thursday night and I have to be up by 6:00 in the morning today Smile

Not going to lie, I am zonked, so I just wanted to leave you with a few photos of my trip, and please come back, things are going to be getting back to normal, no more traveling until January! WOW. I can’t believe I have been blogging for three years. It’s so funny how something can not be a part of your life at all, and then in a blink of an eye it becomes so important and special to you, that you can’t imagine NOT doing it!

This my friends, was my very first blog post. It cracks me up to go back and read it now. When I first started I was in my first year of teaching and did not blog steadily/every day like I do now, but it was a start, and my oh my the places it has taken me! I am so grateful for a good friend of mine who said she was starting a blog and encouraged me to start one too. I wonder what I would be doing today if I hadn’t started RWS? So odd to think about.

I am going to get all sappy for a moment so stay with me. Reading back on my two anniversary posts and thinking about where I was then and where I am now…it just blows my mind in so many different ways. So many things have changed, some for the better and some for worse unfortunately, but I can see how much I have grown up in my writing and as a person thanks to my little blog.

I have made some amazing friends, had awesome fun times with other bloggers, grown some thick skin, and branched out in ways I never could have imagined. However, I take no credit for the places my blog has brought me. Everything I have and am blessed with is all because of God’s awesome grace and love. It hasn’t always been an easy road, but we learn the most when it gets bumpy don’t we?

I have so many ideas, so many things I want to do and accomplish and I am so so very blessed to have this platform from which I can share my heart with you guys. Some of you have been with me from the beginning and I am forever grateful. I have learned that that some tasks may really seem impossible, and sometimes its discouraging and you feel like you aren’t making a difference. But all it takes is a good attitude and a willing heart and you can be used in so many ways.

Friends, God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. YOU can do anything you set your mind to, don’t ever think you are too small or insignificant to be great, to be used, to be a rock star.  Some are great writers or speakers, or athletes, and some are great friends and listeners. We all play a part, and don’t ever shy away from a dream or a goal because you think it’s impossible, because it’s not!!! Take risks, follow your heart, and be kind.

Stay Fit at the Computer

Hi everyone I’m Renee’ Benda I blog over at http://Bendifulblog.com. I am very excited to guest blog for Heather! I’ve enjoyed reading about her running & travel adventures for some time now and jumped at the chance to guest blog. I’m a 30 year old mother of two working hard to stay fit and healthy while balancing a my family, life and fitness. I hope you share with you some great recipes, workouts, and fun finds from across the interwebs.

We’ve all been there whether you’re in cubicle farm or a freelance writer, we find ourselves sitting in front of a computer for hours a day! This has become normal for many career tracks and often wreaks havoc on our healthy- living goals. There are some simple steps you can take to staying fit while at the computer.

The obviously solutions would be a walking work station, but who has $300 for one of those? Plus not all employers are yet on board with alternative solutions to the ole’ desk, chair computer set up. Save yourself $300 and try these easy and inexpensive options.

Posture Check! Sitting for hours in s slouched position can be destructive for back and your heath! I like to set posture check reminders in my outlook calendar, you can set them on your phone too! A simple quick reminder to check your posture. This will remind you to sit up straight and push back your shoulders. This simple instruction will help you engage your core. Feeling extra ambitious add in some tummy pulses.

Pack your lunch and your sneakers. How close is the nearest park to your office? If you can’t answer this question it’s time to find out. During your lunch break get out and explore. Pack your lunch and your sneakers. Taking a walk around the closest park or even just taking a stroll around the block gets your heart pumping, feeds your brain fresh air, and can help burn a few extra calories. Chances are good that by packing your lunch you will make healthier choices than the vending machine. You will have more time to walk at lunch when you aren’t waiting in line at the fast food place. Getting fit is about making a healthy decision and then making another.
Standing during conference calls. Conference calls can be long and boring, we can all admit that right? Take a break from your chair and stand up during the call. It’s a simple solution and also a healthy one. You burn more calories standing than you do sitting. If you’re comfortable standing mix it up! You can bring in a 5 pound weight and do curls while standing and listening.

Play Ball! Have a fur baby or a real baby? Then you probably have a small ball kicking around your house. Bring it to the office, place it under your feet. Trying to balance the ball under your feet helps engage your core and work on stability. This is also a great solution for those of us who are not allowed to sit on a stability ball as a chair. The best part about this exercise is most of the time you can do it without anyone noticing!
HYDRATE. The office atmosphere can lend itself to overeating. It’s Sally’s Birthday, a client dropped off cupcakes, you know the drill. You can offset the amount you eat by hydrating. Drinking water is a proven step in staying healthy and active. I have a friend who packs two water bottles each day full of ice cold water. Throughout the day before 5pm her goal is to drink them both. The water helps her stay full and keeps her hydrated for her after work workout. If you’re full you will eat less of the snacks around the office.

Making these 5 simple adjustments to your work day can help you stay fit while in front of your computer. You will still need to schedule regular sweat sessions but these small steps can help you make healthier choices during the day.

Weekly Recap: October Week 5

 

Good morning! We are headed down to Orlando today, and had fun spectating at ironman Florida yesterday. My sister survived and did very well, and now we are headed to Disney, because Bobby and I have a race to run next weekend!

Let’s take a look at my workouts from this last week. If you will remember, the weekend before (Saturday) I ran the Jazz half marathon, so I took the week pretty easy and didn’t run until Thursday trying to let my arch heal.

Sunday: rest (day after half marathon)

Monday lift upper body weights, 30 minutes stationary bike

Tuesday: lift weights, upper body, 30 minutes stationary bike

Wednesday: off (was wearing holter monitor)

Thursday: upper body weights, 4.5 mile treadmill run

Friday: rest/travel

Saturday: ironman spectating (walked about 2.5 miles total, some in the sand, ran about .5 miles trying to catch my sister to take pictures.

This week will be interesting, and won’t be a typical pre half marathon race week. We will be in Florida all week, walking around a lot and eating sodium filled restaurant food. Oh well. What can you do. It will be a really fun race, we just won’t be getting very many miles in (except walking) or eating healthy foods. Today we check in and head to EPCOT for the Food and Wine Festival before running wine and dine!
