Relax, you’re here

When you pull into the Beach Club, there is a sign that says “relax, you’re here.” That is exactly what we have been doing. We arrived about 8:00 Thursday night after a stop in to Lamberts for dinner. Yesterday morning we slept in, ate breakfast on the balcony, and enjoyed the view.

Unfortunately,  it was too chilly and overcast to hit the beach, but we did walk on it and later watched a movie (free DVD rentals!) Lunch was leftovers from Lamberts and now we are getting ready for dinner here at the resort. Tomorrow is supposed to be 70 and have a little sun. Ready for a run on the beach!

Have a great day everyone!

QOTD: where is your favorite place to relax?

Back Home

I love going back to my hometown to visit my family. It’s always like I never left, and and hanging out with my parents is always a treat. I came to get the dogs groomed and bring them for a visit to grandma and grandpa’s house (my parents, of course).

I dropped my babies off at Petsmart and met my mom for some shopping. We also hit up the brand new Steak N Shake in town. I will admit, I have never been to one of these bad boys, and wow was it good!

2012-02-01112846

I haven’t had a milkshake…or a cheeseburger for that matter…in months! So I happily dug in to this heath bar shake and my mom and I split a burger and fries. It was just one of those days where calories just didn’t matter. Everyone needs to splurge sometimes!

2012-02-01113047

We were pleasantly surprised and will have to be back when we are wanting to splurge!

2012-02-01112855

It was raining while we were eating, but finally let up so we could go for a run. But first, we had to pick up the babies from Petsmart.

Look how precious these bows are!

2012-02-01133021

Look how fun, mom and daughter running skirt duo.

2012-02-01142655

We ended up running five miles, which went by quickly with good conversation. I can’t wait until we run the Disney Princess Half together! Today I am headed back to Mississippi but it was great to see my family for a short visit.

QOTD: Do you run with anyone in your family or are you on your own?

The Beach Club

A few of you have asked me via e-mail about the place we like to stay at the beach. Growing up, we always went to Destin, FL and have a favorite spot, which we stayed in last summer when Bobby had to take some legal classes to keep his law license current. But, we have also gone to another beach a few times, and really love it because it’s two hours from our house, The Beach Club. This beautiful place is just outside of Gulf shores in a more secluded area called Fort Morgan.

DSC00619

The last time Bobby and I were here was in September of 2009 for a long weekend. We had a great one bedroom condo with an amazing view of the beach.

DSC00616

It was nice to be there in the off season when it wasn’t crowded at all. I know it will be a little bit cooler this time around but really, we are just wanting to get away so we don’t really care.

DSC00621

We really like how “off the beaten path” this place is. They also have free dvd rentals and a few different dining options. We of course will be hitting up the gym and running on the beach!

DSC00645

DSC00646

When we go to the beach, we like having a condo, so we can bring a lot of our own food. it makes it healthier and cheaper!

Plus we really love sitting on the balcony eating breakfast.

Hopefully it will be warm enough to hit up the pool, but they have an indoor one too if it’s not.

QOTD: Where is your favorite beach spot?

Mental Break

Ever just feel like you need a little mental break? Bobby and I are very much feeling that way right now! Just when you think you are done handling a certain situation, a BIG one mind you…one lasting almost a year and a half…it creeps back up when you least expect it. Blah.

My parents are currently at the beach, and my mom sent me these two gorgeous pictures:

photo

beach

Sigh. Gorgeous.

So, we are thinking we may take a spontaneous early Valentine’s Day-we-need-to-get-the-heck-out-of-town-before-we-lose-it trip next weekend. I love and miss the beach, and our favorite spot is only two hours away, so we may just go for it. I think I need to take my own advice (number 5) on my blog post about things not going as planned!

Sometimes, don’t you just wish you could snap your fingers, go back in time, and change something that would avoid a WHOLE lot of future drama? Oh boy do I ever with this one! (Nothing I did…preventing someone else from doing something stupid basically.)

Sorry to be less than stoked today guys, I try to always look for the positive and in a situation and make lemonade out of lemons, but trust me, this one is a toughie.

I love y’all and hope you have a fabulous weekend. I am heading out to run six miles with Bobby.

QOTD: If you could get away for the weekend, where would you go?

Passionate

You can tell when you are reading an article or blog written by a person passionate about their subject matter. The joy and excitement overflow onto the page, and is woven into each sentence or idea. Having a desire to share, motivate, and inspire is evident in their work, making each new story exciting to read.  It’s not just about writing, but about the fire that burns within the author, desiring to get their point across to help inform and share with others. Running With Sass is my baby, and I deeply enjoy sharing stories, tips, and motivation with my readers everyday. To be able to do so on an even larger scale would be a dream come true.

True, I am just an average girl, but that is part of my draw. I attract a lot of readers that are new runners, bloggers, and those just starting out on their fitness journey. I have received countless e-mails from readers thanking me for being real and honest, and for showing them that anyone can be fit and healthy.  They enjoy my message of not having to be the fastest, the strongest, or the best…but just striving to be the greatest version of themselves.

DSC_2669

Growing up, I played multiple sports, and even moved on to coaching after college. I have coached basketball at the middle school level, and volleyball at the high school varsity (6A) level. I am very knowledgeable of both sports, and fitness in general. Running is my most recent passion of three years, and I recently have added weight lifting and yoga to my always growing fitness practices.

2011-12-09075635

My job allows me to travel to several races throughout the year, so I believe having a fresh perspective on the health and fitness of different cities would be a great benefit to readers. Not only have I learned a lot working at health and fitness expos, but also in partnering with several companies to review and share their products.

Other passions of mine include putting a stop to childhood obesity, and furthering cancer research. I shared my thoughts and experience in a vlog last month on the matter of childhood obesity. As a former teacher, it broke my heart to see so many children struggle with their weight and be bullied by other students.

Don’t forget about my 6 second “fail” that went along with the above vlog. Oops! At least I can laugh at myself, right? (I’m saying “fail” at the end of the video).

I also love social media, and spend a lot of time each day interacting on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, as well as several forums, message boards and other blogs. I have a large twitter following, and a fan page for my blog on Facebook as well as a personal Facebook page. Participating in Twitter chats and social media conversations is something I really enjoy. Meeting new people, reaching out and making friends is an encouragement and inspiration.

My mother is a stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. She is an amazing woman with a lot of fight, and a great inspiration to many. I have learned so much watching her, and as a family we have all taken steps towards a more healthy lifestyle to help prevent certain types of cancer. My husband and I ran a half marathon this fall with Team in Training benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. It was a great experience and I was thrilled to be a part of raising money for cancer research and treatment.

DSC00086

In closing, I think the name of my blog says it all. Yes I run, and yes I try to live an active, healthy life…but I do it all with a touch of sass. Who says healthy living and fitness have to be boring and bland? Spicing up your fitness and health as well as your life in general, can help you to be a success story. I have faced obstacles, criticism, injuries, mental defeats, and trials. Through it all, my husband and I are dedicated to a healthy and fit lifestyle, against all odds.

Below is a video I put together last summer documenting my healthy living journey. I hope you enjoy following along.

Saturday in Pictures & Workout Recap

Yesterday, my Sunday school class and their families went to the place my husband works to do a mission project. They have some older buildings that needed repainting and we agreed to do it for them. The day started off gloomy and windy but turned to be beautiful and a great day for painting. (Although, I must say my shoulders disagree that it as a perfect day, very, very sore!)

Here are a few pictures my lovely friend Gina took of the occasion.

A Look Back 1/11

If you have been reading RWS for awhile, you know that sometimes I like to look back on what I was doing a year ago. Considering I have experienced many life changes in the past 10 months, I thought it would be fun to look back and reflect.

This time last year, I had just run the Disney marathon.

castle

Bobby got sick with the flu post race and we had to cut our trip short.

I was living with my parents for four months while Bobby and I built a house in a new town. We had most of our things in boxes in the garage of the house we were trying to sell, and the rest were crammed into the upstairs bedroom that I grew up in.

DSC_2173

I switched my blog over to self hosting, and am so glad that I did! It has given me a lot more opportunities and flexibility.

RWSHeaderFinal

We watched over the building of our new house, and and we ran a 5k in my old hometown to finish out the month.

DSC_2013

I know I say this a lot when I do these types of posts, but wow have things changed since then. I know a lot of times I wish I could see the bigger picture of life, but then there are other times when I know if I did, I would probably have a breakdown knowing what was coming.

We have been through several things since last January that I never saw coming. I know I am stronger because of it, but it’s still so funny to see where life takes you even though you have a different “plan.”  I also find it amusing that at any given age, you feel so much older than the year before. In a way, I guess it’s true. Through life experiences, we learn and grow, and the way in which you grow depends on what you choose to get out of any given situation. I am working on looking at the negative, and making sure that I at least learn something from it it. That way, I can always know that at least one positive thing came out of my trial.

I will check back in with another flashback in a few months and see how things have changed again!

—————————————————–

Last night I took my first yoga class at our new YMCA. I have always wanted to take yoga classes because I am incredibly inflexible, and I knew it would help my running. Unfortunately, we weren’t members of a gym for a long time, and then when we were, it was Planet Fitness with no classes.

Our yoga teacher is amazing! She is 76 years old, 76! She is way more flexible than I will ever be, and I totally admire her. I hope to still be working out at that age. It’s safe to say my arms and legs were jello and I am quite sore, but a good sore.

Beyond the Parks Part 2

In my last installment of beyond the parks of Disney world, we discussed golf, working out/spa, waterparks, water craft, afternoon tea, and bike rentals. Today I will discuss a few more of the hidden fun things to do while vacationing in Disney World beyond the standard theme park rides (which are still great by the way!)

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex:

I wouldn’t have known this existed if I wasn’t a runner. This is where Disney holds the expos for their races. There are plenty of events held here such as Pre-season training for the Atlanta Braves and the Tampa Bay Bucs. SO, depending on the time of year, you could hit up one of different sporting events! WWOS is also home to the Playstation Pavilion. They have 17 PS3 systems, wi fi, and more. It costs $5 to play for thirty minutes.

DSC_1659

Characters in Flight: This hot air balloon located in Downtown Disney will take you a soaring 400 feet above the ground (tethered to it, of course!) for the best views of Walt Disney world. You get to enjoy your view for 8-10 minutes flying high in the sky. Weather permitting, hours of operation are 10:00 am to midnight.

Fireworks Cruise:

You can board a boat for the Wishes or Illuminations fireworks in Walt Disney World. Price of the wishes cruises includes snacks, and you can even have Private dining whip you something uo to eat onboard. What a great way to enjoy the show from the 7 seas lagoon!

For the illuminations cruise, you can also have private dining have food for you, as you cruise around the water in EPCOT watching the show.

Another option is the Grand 1 Yacht at the Grand Floridian. It is a 45 foot boat staffed with a captain and deckhand. Ride the lagoon in Grand style as you enjoy the Magic Kingdom Fireworks.

Lastly, there is the Pirates and Pals Fireworks voyage. You are provided snacks before your voyage, where you can watch the electrical water pageant and Wishes fireworks. Captain Hook and mr. Smee may show up for photos, before you sail the lagoon, docking nearby to watch the fireworks. You may even get to see Peter Pan as the voyage concludes.

DSC_0682

Horse drawn carriage rides:

At Fort Wilderness, you can take an old fashioned horse drawn carriage ride, first come first served. The ride lasts 45 minutes and departs from Pioneer hall twice nightly. During Halloween, you can book a haunted 25 minute carriage ride through the woods. Spooky! There are also Holiday “sleigh rides” that you can book in advance.

There are also regular25 minute carriage rides at Fort Wilderness and Port Orleans Resort.

———————————-

These are just a sampling of the many, many fun things to do in WDW. This is one reason we keep going back. We do new fun things every single trip, and have a blast! If you would like more information on any of the things I mentioned above, please contact me at heather@travelwiththemagic.com and I would be more than happy to help you plan your vacation AT NO COST. Our services are free for our clients!

Be sure to click on the Free Disney Travel Quote tab on my menu bar for more info and current offers!

I ran 3 miles in the treadmill last night. my first three miles since the injury! It was really hard (and slow) but I did it! Next run on Thursday I will go for 3.5. Movin on up, yall! Thanks again for all the support and encouragement!

QOTD: If you had Disney world to yourself for a whole day what would you do?

A Day in the Life 2012

I have gotten a couple of questions of the past few months about what I do during the day. It’s pretty obvious I’m at home when I tweet about watching Desperate Housewives on Hulu (So addicting by the way!)  and going to the gym in the middle of the day.

2011-12-09075650

But I am far from bored or relaxing all day long! Granted my days vary a LOT but this is a rough outline of what a day in my life looks like:

7:10 wake up, go downstairs and take the dogs out and feed them Chat with Bobby for a few minutes until he leaves at 7:25. Make coffee

7:25 See Bobby off to work, turn on the computer. Check emails, twitter, Facebook, blogs, start working on Disney quotes, etc.

8:30 Daily devotion/Bible reading and prayer time

9:00 Breakfast. usually either a protein bar or greek yogurt with granola, blueberries, etc.

9:30 More e mail checking, work up Disney quotes and running skirts orders

10:30 Head to the gym or for a run outside (or grocery store, or running errands, etc)

11:30 come home, shower (or put away groceries, etc.)

11:45 do some light cleaning. Put a load of laundry on, pick up around the house, unload the dishwasher

12:15 take the dogs out, eat lunch (soup, sandwich, etc.)

12:30 clean the bathrooms, or dust, or vacuum, or file papers. Whatever the most glaring things are that day.

1:30 take a break. Watch TV or Hulu, surf the web, play with the dogs, call my mom or Bobby to say hi

2:30 prep my blog for the next day, set it to publish the next morning. Work on Disney quotes and running skirt stuff. Feed the dogs

3:30 work on more Disney quotes, answer blog e mails, chat on twitter

4:30 Bobby calls and says he is on his way home, will be here around 5:10. I then go start cooking dinner. Take dogs out.

5:15 ish Bobby gets home, we eat dinner

5:45 sit outside or on the couch and chat about our days, let our food settle

6:15 take the golf cart to the gym with Bobby, lift weights

7:15 come back home, shower, check blogs again, answer questions about Disney or running skirts, check twitter, and Facebook

8:30 hang out with Bobby, watch TV together, get ready for bed , take dogs out, etc.

10:15 ish go to bed, get ready to do it all over again!

75420-1221-018f

So, as you can see, my day is slightly random but very full. One thing to note is that I don’t have “work hours.” With my jobs, I am constantly answering e mails 24/7. It never stops, so if I plan a vacation for you and you get an e mail at 9:00 at night, you know why. I get bored easy so I try to not stay seated too long. I could easily say “I am going to work on quotes and orders from 9-2” but I would go crazy, so I break it up and work on things as they come. Some days I DO sit still and work on things for 4 hours at a time because I am so busy, but other days I have more time to clean, run errands, etc. It really just depends. Also note when I say “check blogs, get on twitter, etc.” this is partially work as well, I am tweeting about my jobs, doing research on current offers, or trying to get more exposure for my brands.

8899154b

doing laundry is way more fun in my red washer and dryer!

So, there ya go! I do love my work because I have a lot of flexibility. I can go visit my family for the day and just work into the night when I get home. Or I can meet a friend for coffee and get up early to get work done before I go. I am constantly checking my e mail when I am away in case a client from either job needs me. I take pride in my work and doing things well.

2011-07-02070750

I love to run at the beach when the weather is nice!

QOTD: What is your favorite part of your day? Do you like to buckle down and work all at once or sporadically throughout the day?

Five Years and Counting

I cannot believe it’s January 6 2012! On this day, five years ago, I walked down the aisle and said “I do.” I remember being so proud that we made it to one year, and we were no longer “newlyweds,” but it seems like just yesterday we were dancing the second line dance with boas and umbrellas in New Orleans.

For those of you who have been long time loyal blog readers, I apologize if you have to see some of the same pictures again, but I can’t help it, I loved my wedding and want to share it with you. Smile I did a whole recap last year, so you can find it on our four year anniversary post. It was quite the crazy wedding day so I suggest reading it if you like wedding recaps! I also wrote a post during the royal wedding which includes some pictures from my big day.

It was a fun day to say the least. I love looking back on pictures over the last five years, it’s so funny to see how much we have grown and changed. I’m sure we will be saying the same thing on our 10, 15, 20, 25 and so on anniversaries. Bobby and I are so blessed to have found each other, and I thank God for making us specifically for each other. I leave you with the lyrics to a song I love, one that was beautifully sung at our wedding.

When God Made You

its always been a mystery to me,
How two hearts can come together,
And love can last forever.
But now that I have found you I believe,
That a miracle has come when God sends the perfect one.
So gone are all my questions about why,
And i’ve never been so sure of anything in my life

~chorus~

Oh I wonder what God was thinking, when he created you.
I wonder if He knew everything I would need,
Because he made all my dreams come true.
When God made you, He must have been thinking about me.

(Girls)

Ooo ooo,I promise that wherever you may go, wherever life may lead you,
With all my heart I’ll be there too.
And from this moment on I want you to know,
I’ll let nothing come between us, and I will love the ones you love.
(guy):So gone are all my questions about why (girl echoes):about why                                                 and I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life

Duet:Oh I wonder what God was thinking when he created you,
I wonder if He knew everything I would need,
Because He made all my dreams come true.
When God made you He must’ve been thinking about me.

Bridge

He made the sun He made the moon,
To harmonize a perfect tune,
One can’t do without the other they just have to be together.
And that is how I know its true,
Your for me and I’m for you and my world
Just cant be right without you in my life

Chorus

(guy) He must have heard every prayer I’ve been praying (girl echo)
I’ve been praying (both)He must’ve knew everything I would need

When God made you, He must’ve been thinking about me.

QOTD: What was sung at your wedding? If you aren’t married, what do you want sung at your wedding?
