Try Something New 2013

Good morning! I was hoping to have my half marathon race recap up today, but I am having some issues with the professional photos and I am still waiting on answers. I haven’t forgotten, don’t worry! Today I wanted to talk about trying new things.

I was worried about running Goofy…really worried. I had been injured, didn’t train properly, and wasn’t sure I was going to finish in one piece. Not only did I finish, I knocked it out of the park, and I am SO proud of me and Bobby. It really helped me to restore my faith in myself, and made me remember that I can accomplish my goals, even if it takes a little longer than anticipated. It got me thinking about doing something I have never done before, something I thought I could never do, that I want to do in 2013.

I have never been a huge fan of fitness classes, not sure why. I prefer to workout whenever I get a chance, and I have a crazy schedule so it’s hard to predict. I easily get bored, and sometimes get intimidated by trying new things, especially when I feel like everyone in the class already knows what they are doing. I was brave and did some yoga classes last year, but it was in my neighborhood with some friends so it wasn’t too intimidating. However, some new classes are starting up…ones I have NEVER done, and honestly it scares me to try something new like that. SO, I have decided to just do it. To make the time, get over it, and dive right in. I’m not sure what I will do first, but I am going to make an effort. Here is how:

1.) Make the time. Whether I have to schedule it into my calendar or set an alarm on my phone, I am going to make the time.

2.) Get over my fear. I am going to mentally make sure I am prepared, stand in the back, and just try my best. I know it may seem SO silly, but I have always struggled with this. I get scared in the beginning, then after awhile realize what the heck I was so worried about? So I just need to mentally get over that first time.

3.) Remind myself it will make me a more fit person. I have been running, and running, and running, which I love, but I want to be much more well rounded and in shape than just running shape. This is a big motivator for me.

4.) Talk to other who have taken the classes. Talking to friends with first hand experience is very helpful, and gets me even excited about trying something new. If they can do it, so can I!

I will let you know how it goes!

Friday Favorites: Fitmixer

I thought in honor of today being the last day to enter the my Fitmixer boot camp giveaway, I would take a little time to tell you about the products themselves (which you would receive as part of your prize pack should you win the boot camp entry!)

The two products I have been using are the protein and the aminos. I take the aminos before workouts, and usually drink the protein as a snack (I like the taste of the ones I get from, but typically not every day.

My favorite flavor protein is the vanilla, it seriously does taste like a milkshake, love! I like the grape and fruit punch aminos. Both taste very different but equally good! I am so hooked on them I take them with me when I travel.

I feel like they give me more energy and sustained energy for my workouts, which is so important in our on the go society. It’s easy to feel drained before you even get to the gym!

The protein gives you of course well, protein, but also vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and fiber. It can help you increase your metabolism to burn fat faster, and also helps aid in recovery while reducing fatigue. The aminos can increase nitric oxide by 300%! (Increased nitric oxide may have a variety of benefits including increased oxygen delivery throughout the body to reduce fatigue and improve muscle recovery.)

These products really do help, and I even have my husband hooked on them. If you want to learn more about what Fitmixer has to offer, check out their website.  I really love the company’s approach to health and fitness for you physically as well as mentally. I’m not just saying these things because I am an ambassador for them, I honestly believe in these products!

QOTD: Is there something specific you take or drink before/after a workout? Have you tried Fitmixer?

Synergy Stew

Have you ever made soup before, but were missing that one ingredient that just makes it amazing? Unfortunately, it can throw things off balance and your soup won’t taste right. Just like soup, our lives and health rely on a certain, individual to each person, formula to help you reach your optimum health and fitness levels. This can also be called your “synergy stew”.

So, I would love for YOU to think about your life, and think about how great you feel when everything is clicking with your fitness and health routines, you feel strong and confident and at your best. What “ingredients” make up this “stew” for you personally? It’s a great exercise to help you see if you are currently needing to tweak and re-prioritize some things in your life that may help you to become a better YOU!

For example, here is my synergy stew:

Getting 8 hours of sleep a night

running 3-4 times a week

lifting 3-4 times a week

cross train 1-2 times a week

stretching as much as possible

eating a healthy diet

cutting back on sugar and processed foods

drinking Fitmixer aminos and protein shakes.

When I am doing all of these things, I feel strong and at my best. But when even one of these things is missing, things start to get out of whack and can easily snowball downhill!

Head over to Fitmixer and tell them what is in your synergy stew and you can WIN two pounds of a Fitmixer product! (also don’t forget to tell them that I sent you!)

*BOGO sale! Check out the Fitmixer Facebook page ( and “like” the page to unlock a code to get a FREE bottle of fruit punch amino® with any purchase (does not include blender bottles). Ends November 30.

I am by no means an expert, but I think I have finally figured out how to fuel my body for running. Please take this with a gain of salt, I know everyone is different and different people may have sensitive stomachs, etc. It may have taken a couple of years but I think I have finally got it.

Pre run (morning):

-banana or greek yogurt

-Clif bar

Fitmixer amino

-glass of water

During run:

-One GU for every 3 miles, preferably one with caffeine

-Nuun or Gatorade and then water, traded off

Runs longer than 13 miles:

“real” solid food added in such as a banana, or half of a peanut butter sandwich

Oh, gingerbread how I miss thee

I used to only take two GU’s when running a half marathon distance, but during the Disneyland half I actually took 3.5, and felt great. I could definitely tell I had a boost of energy several minutes later. My method was when I saw a water stop near a time I wanted to fuel, I would go ahead and take it out and start eating. Then, by time I got tot he water station I was almost finished and could then take a half cup of water and half cup of Gatorade to wash it down.

My point in saying this, is find what works best for you, practice with it and stick to it. Race day is not the time to experiment with something new you bought at the expo. be sure to practice with race day fuel on your long runs, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. keep in mind there are different brands of chews, blocks, and GU’s out there, so just because one doesn’t work doesn’t mean you should count them all out. Some people prefer to eat good old gummi bears or hard candy and that’s fine, too.

Also, timing is important as well. I have learned the hard way that i need 45 minutes to an hour to digest my breakfast before I can run or I get major side cramps, every. single. time. Also timing on runs, knowing what miles to take your fuel (what works best you YOU) is equally as important.

Also find out form the race director what kind of sports drink and fuel will be on the course, and try some at home to make sure it does ok with you stomach.

Go ahead and experiment, so that you will be prepared on race day to have a great run and not have to worry or fuss with wen or how you are going to fuel!

QOTD: What is your favorite pre or mid run fuel?

Goal Making

For the year or so, at the beginning of the month I usually set a few goals and then recap them at the end of the month and give my effort/achievement a “score” on each goal. Some months I really rock it and knock them all out, and some months I am way off my mark. Why? I feel like one of the main reasons is not having a plan.

A lot of times, we tend to make goals, and then forget about them until the next week/month/or year without doing “check ups” or without ever coming up with a plan of attack to begin with. You may have heard the old acronym about goals and being smart, but just in case you forgot, here it is again:

The SMART Goal Acronym

  • Specific  (what is your goal? who is involved? Location? reasons for this goal?)
  • Measurable  (can you measure the success of this goal? Will it “end” at a time or achievement?)
  • Attainable  (don’t set it too high that you could never achieve it)
  • Realistic  (Do you have faith in yourself that you can do this?)
  • Timely   (When will you see results? How long will it go on?)

With this in mind, here are a couple of goals I have for the month of September:

1.) Run 4 days a week

2.) Drink 8 glasses of water a day

3.) Stop negative thinking/pessimistic attitude

Looking at all three goals, I believe they all follow the SMART plan. Here’s how:

1.) Run 4 days a week: I will mark it in my planner/calendar as a to do item, it is measurable (I either do it or don’t) It is very attainable and realistic for me and I am putting a time on if for the end of September.

2.) Drink 8 glasses of water a day: I plan to use my cell phone app to track my water consumption, will try to do this every day until the end of the month, it is attainable and realistic, and timely.

3.) Stop negative thinking/pessimistic attitude: This one is a bit tricky. I have to force myself to STOP as soon as I realize I am doing this. I am going to try to change my thinking to something good and positive when I realize I am being negative. My measure for this goal is to try to stop negative thinking before it turns into a “bad attitude” for the day. It is realistic and attainable and my timetable is on a daily basis for the rest of the month.

This month’s fitmixer® giveaway topic is to help us realize our fitness/health goals and what steps we can take to achieve them.  I encourage you to head over to Fitmixer’s page and earn entries into their monthly giveaway.

You can win two pounds of your choice of Fitmixer product! It’s simple and quick, head on over! (Doing the extra entry for telling them which ambassador sent you would make me really happy!)

QOTD: No question, just please go over and enter to win! You can always leave a comment letting me know you did, just for brownie points. Smile

This post is part of my ambassadorship with Fitmixer, but the views and opinions expressed are my own.

It’s Time to Break Up

Something new and exciting to announce today, a week or so ago I was asked to be a brand ambassador! You can check out my bio on their ambassador page and see who else you may know what is an ambassador. Anyway, something that totally drew me to them when I was asked about it was the idea of BALANCE. For them, it’s not just about eating right, or working out, it’s a balance of those things PLUS the mental aspect of it all. Positive thinking, self confidence, and a balanced life are all things I value so I as very excited to jump on board. Fitmixer also holds boot camps if you enjoy doing those, be sure to check it out!

It doesn’t matter if you are trying to build muscle, lose weight, or just make sure you are getting the proper nutrients, fitmixer has a great product line for everyone. I have been loving the vanilla protein powder (tastes like a milkshake!) and the amino acid supplement. I have been taking the protein before workouts and the amino afterwards.

Another great thing about me being an ambassador? I will get to hold giveaways for YOU! That’s right, so stay tuned for the fun. I will be hosting giveaways here on my site and also linking you up to ones being hosted by Fitmixer.

Every month, I will be writing a Fitmixer blog post on a particular topic given to me by the company. This month’s topic is…dun dun dun…the break up letter. As they say, breaking up is hard to do. However, sometimes it just needs to be done, and I have some things/attitudes I need to break up with myself. So I decided to write my break up letter to doubt.

Dear doubt,

It’s time for you to go. I am tired of you whispering in my ear every time I get injured that I will never be able to run again, that I will never reach my goals, and that I will be unhappy. I am tired of the anxiety that comes along with being unsure about the future. I am typically a positive person, but for some reason when it comes to fitness, running, and my blog goals, it all goes out the window.

I know you want me to never realize my dreams or goals, and you want me to keep telling myself that I am not good enough, strong enough, or fast enough to matter. You do NOT want me to remember that everyone is on a different road, that everyone’s journey will not look the same. You do NOT want me to remember that I have friends and family that love me and are rooting for me.

Instead, you want me to give up. Quit. Stay down when the going gets tough. Oh, doubt, it would be so easy to do so, and honestly, in the past year, there have been times when I wanted to give in to you. Getting a stress fracture in my foot, getting morton’s neuroma in the same foot, dealing with other stresses of life, and having writers/bloggers block. You would have loved that wouldn’t you? But I refuse to let you win, you will not defeat me. So doubt, hit the road, I can and will do this!
