Beat the Heat + My Race Ragz Rocks!

I was honored to be asked to be the featured blogger in the My Race Ragz newsletter this month. Some of you who already get the newsletter probably saw my face in your inbox yesterday morning, but in case you missed it, you can see the write up here.  By the way, if you would like to sign up for the monthly newsletter, it’s so easy, just go here and enter in a bit of information!

In my little interview, I was asked about ways to heat the heat during summer running. This is so appropriate being I live one of the hottest, most humid parts of the country so I kind of have these tips mastered! Here are the tips I gave:

Tips for staying safe while running in the summer / heat.

Running in the heat is no joke, and it is important to stay safe and pay attention to the weather. My best tips for running in the heat include:

  1. Run early in the morning or late at night to avoid the hottest and sunniest parts of the day.
  2. Hydrate hydrate hydrate before, during, and after your run.
  3. Slather on the SPF, and I always wear a visor to keep the sun off my face in the summer months.
  4. Put a wet washcloth in the freezer, and then carry it with you on your run to keep you cool
  5. Be sure to replace not only water, but salt and electrolytes. Gatorade, nuun, and coconut water are my favorite go to’s.
  6. Be realistic. Your pace is going to drop, and that’s ok! Have realistic goals for your summer runs
  7. Most importantly, listen to your body. If you get dizzy or lightheaded, stop running, and find some shade ASAP. Better to be safe than sorry!

I was also asked about some races I am running this fall and my goals for them:

Meet Heather from Running With Sass.  She’s an avid runner and now a My Race Ragz sportin’ fashionista.

Here’s what we asked Heather:

What are your racing goals for 2012?

I have a couple of race goals for the rest of 2012. I would love to run a sub 2:00 half marathon for one, but I also have a goal of staying injury free. I have struggled with several running injuries that have hampered my ability to reach my goals, so I am trying to take really good care of my body so that doesn’t happen! I also also have a goal of having FUN with every race. Running is a privilege and I don’t want to take it for granted.

What races are you signed up for over the summer / fall?

Living in the deep south, there are not many races going on in the summer. I am signed up for the Disneyland half marathon in September, the Gulf coast half marathon in October, and Disney’s Wine and Dine half marathon in November. But my “big race” is goofy’s race and a half challenge in January of 2013! Running a half marathon Saturday and a full on Sunday is so scary to me, but I am excited!

THANKS My Race Ragz for featuring me in your newsletter! (In case anyone missed my review of the awesome shirt I got from them you can check it out here).

QOTD: Do you have any other tips for staying safe while running/beating the heat this summer?

Friday Favorites: Running Skirts Spring/Summer

Good morning and happy Friday the 13th! Spooky! I am blogging to you this morning from Louisiana. I came here yesterday to drop my pups off with my parents since we are going to Florida for the half marathon this weekend. I spent the day with my mom, I went and saw The Hunger Games with her, we ordered pizza, and me, mom and dad went and got snowballs for dessert. It was a great visit! Today I am driving back home, and catching up on some work before we got out of town.

If you are running the Disney marathon, I have a room block I am booking from, and will be offering a discounted rate, I can book starting TODAY! Some of you have already contacted me, so if you haven’t be sure to get your spot while you can! E mail me at [email protected]

Most of you know I work for Running Skirts (check out the “Running Skirts” tab above for more info.) The spring/summer line is now out, and it is super cute. If you have yet to try a Running Skirt, no better time like Spring!

I must say my favorite thing about the new line is the mesh limitless performance tank (shown below in mandarin) It has such a flattering fit and is so comfy. The skirt I am wearing isn’t new…but you may recognize it from the cover of Runner’s World!

Also new for spring, are the regulation length golf skirts. They are super cute and the perfect length for hitting the golf course at your local country club.

Also, did you know Running Skirts sells mini skirts for little girls? They are adorable! Matching moms and daughters make adorable photos.

I will be wearing a new outfit from the spring/summer line for my half marathon this weekend, so stay tuned for pics!

QOTD: Do you wear the same old running clothes or do you buy news stuff a lot?

Fashion Friday and the Hunger Games

Happy Friday! Who is off work today? Unfortunately, I am working, as is my husband. But, her is off on Monday, so I am going to try to get a lot done today so I can take part of Monday off. Today is an important day for me though, as a Christian, so I will be taking some time out today to reflect on the importance of Good Friday to me.

I will admit, I do not consider myself a fashionable person. Working from home, I wear mainly sweats and running skirts, so being fashionable is a bit more tricky. When I do go to dinner or out somewhere, I do take a bit more careful consideration since I don’t get to wear “real” clothes as often! I will not be doing fashion Friday every Friday, but plan to implement it sometimes, when the mood (or an outfit) strikes me.

Today, I am a walking Banana Republic outlet ad. We went to dinner with a friend last night, so I wore some new clothes I picked up at the outlet (40% off plus I had a 15% off coupon, score!)

I also wanted to discuss the Hunger Games. I know a lot of people have been talking about it, but as an avid fan of the books, I wanted to share my thoughts on the movie as well.

I did think it was a good adaptation from book to movie (pretty close as you can get). But, I did feel some key parts were left out.

1.) I feel like the “showmance” between Katniss and Peeta was not played up. I don’t think people who didn’t read the books would understand she was really not in love with him and was thinking about Gale.I think it was kind of confusing.

2.) In the book, a big deal was made out of the capitol food and how much Katniss loved it and overindulged. I feel like a lot more emphasis could have been made on the food, and the fact that she was starving and the people in 12 were always hungry.

3.) I wish they would have put in the part where Katniss received bread from Rue’s district.

4.) When Katniss first got into the arena, she searched and searched for water and it was a big deal. In the movie, she went right to it, no big deal.

5.) The part where Peeta “disguised” himself by the river. OMG. I die. I almost busted out laughing in the middle of the theater because it was so ridiculous.

6.) The avox girl was totally taken out.

There are a few other minor things here and there, but those were the main things I saw. I know it was hard to take the book to movie since Katniss is narrating the book, and I know my expectations were REALLY high. Don’t get me wrong, overall I was pleased, I loved seeing the Capitol outfits etc. and hope to see more in the next movie! (Which by the way I am so bummed doesn’t come out until November 2013!)

QOTD: –Do you consider yourself fashionable?

-Did you see the Hunger Games? thoughts? anything else they left out?

Target Pants Review

So I bought some of the target running pants, and I thought I would take the time to give a little review on the product. First, when i heard the C9 brand was coming out with extended sizes I was stoked! regular pants are too short, and forget putting the in the dryer! The “long” size said on the tag: “for women 5’9″ and taller.” Well, I am 5’9″ so I thought they would fit perfect, and even if they were a SMIDGE too long, I could put them in the dryer.

Well, I bought said pants, and they are SO LONG! Like, almost cover my entire foot wrapped underneath my heel! Seriously? I am 5’9″ and these are ridiculously long! You would have to be about 6’2″ to fit in these! I would think more women are 5’9″ or 5’10” and not 6’2″!!! I was a little bummed about it, but I stuck them in the dryer this morning so hopefully they will shorten up.

They are SUPER comfy, and fit is good other than the length. I got the mediums and felt great in them on my run yesterday (other than the fact that I had to ROLL UP THE BOTTOMS!) I guess that’s how short people feel when wearing regular pants?

Anyway, HERE is the link to the pants. Maybe if you are not abnormally tall/short the regular length will be perfect for you! These pants have some great potential at a great price!

On another note, went to wal mart today and got some spinach, at some point I will be trying a green monster! I am nervous!!
May do some strength training today, we will see!
