I never thought this day would come…

Ok, so I am a self proclaimed junk food adict. I love sweets, sugar, soda, pizza, hamburgers, mashed potatoes, and anything with cheese (well, almost, I hate broccoli YUCK!) I always heard people say things like “when you start to eat better, your body feels better and you won’t want to eat the bad things, and you will crave good things.”
Well, I never believed this, I mean who doesn’t love a good burger and fries or milkshake? Well, I have started to get to where this really does apply to me! I honestly NEVER thought it would happen. I have by NO MEANS “arrived.” I still don’t like veggies that much and I still love junk, but I crave it less, and crave better stuff more. Also, not even that, but I will say “hhmm a milkshake sounds so good” but then I will think “wait..that will be a ton of calories and make me feel so gross when I run tomorrow.” etc. It’s like I actually think before I eat (sometimes). For instance, when we were in Disneyworld for the 1/2 marathon, we ate SO BAD, greasy, yummy, food. Well, by the end of the trip I was CRAVING fruit. FRUIT! me!!! It was so odd but true! I defiantely still have a ways to go, but I feel like I am on the right track, and it feels great! Realizing how differnt foods affect my runs or just my day in general really help me to not be so sluggish!
So, give it a try. If someone like me can notice a difference, I know you can, too!!! Now if I could just figure out a way to like salad….

What a Tease!

This morning, I wnet on a 5 mile run with my husband. I didn’t have work today so it was nice to wake up to the sun, and then go run in the 52 degree weather! We ran a new way today. Instead of going through our boring neighborhood we ran down our old country road, across the street and onto the trails of another neighborhood. They were so quiet and peaceful! It was a really nice run.

here is our road, looking both ways.

the trails in the Reunion

running by some houses

I think we will start running this way more ofter. The trail wraps all the way around the neighborhood, or we could run through the neighborhood. Lots of options! This excites me because I was getting REALLY boared of our small neighborhood and didn’t want to have to drive somewhere to run.
SO I definately feel accomplished and wish i could run in the morning every day! (In daylight and not freezing) I have so much more energy now.
So to explain the title of this post, the high today is 64! After weeks of freezing, 64! This weekend it’s supposed to be 72! wow! But, it’s such a tease because next week, the high is 54….grumble grumble…come on spring!

**I also updated my races section with a couple pics from other races we have run.

WHO DAT?!?

For those who don’t know, I am a huge, HUGE New Orleans Saints fan. I was born and raised outside of New Orleans and grew up being a fan and going to games. We actually got to go to a gamewhen we were home for Christmas and I got to take my husband to his first NFL game.
Anyway, they just, minutes ago, stomped the Arizona Cardinals, I mean STOMPED 45-14. I wore my Saints garb today and flew my flag outsie my car. Don’t judge me. Just wanted to give a shout out to my boys. I am so proud of them. FINISH STRONG!

in other news: 100% rain today = no running. boo.

working on it

I added some pictures to the “races” section of my blog, and I have more to add, so check back soon! I am also going to when I get some free time (haha) work on my my layout, adding other things/links to my blog, etc. I have a few links but need to add more!

On an actual running note, I ran 3 miles with my husband yesterday. It was miserable!!! Goes to show how much adrenaline affects you! How did I run 13.1 miles without stopping except to get water, but 3 was torture yesterday? running is a funny thing…

Is that…the SUN?!?

So I have been suffering from the winter blues lately. It has been so darn cold and overcast here. If you are form up north, like, Seattle or something (or FORKS maybe, for all you twilight fans?!?) please, explain to me, how you get ANYTHING done?! This weather is so depressing, and it makes me feel tired and sluggish and I just want to snuggle up with my puppies and a book and do nothing.
I have heard of those lights that are supposed to help with your mood, do people really use those? Someone please enlighten this southern girl!!! Well, point being, well, two points actually…the first, tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and 60 YAY! I just may get to run outside!!! Second point, I thought, since the weather was so depressing, I would think of a list of things that make me happy and share them with you. so, here are a few in no particular order.

1. Disneyworld. I am obssessed with the place. wanna get me in a good mood, take me. now.

2. puppies. I LOVE puppies. how can you not smile when you see a puppy yawn?

3. a good run. I love the endorphins and feeling after a really great run, I feel great all day!

4. sweet tea. This is a must at least once every weekend. not only do I love it but it makes me bounce off the walls which is fun.

5. My husband. he is so silly. he makes me smile.

6. smoothie king smoothies. esp. slim n trim strawberry. its the bomb.com

7.a clean house. WHEW do I feel so much better and happier when my house is clean. anyone wanna come do it for me?

8. sleeping. I love to sleep. My dad says I get it from my mom’s side of the family. I could sleep 10 hours every night and not wake up once.

9. Christmas. Ok now I am sad….because it’s over for the year..wait! this list is supposed to make me happy! defeating the purpose here…ok moving on!

10. The color pink. It’s just so cheery! If someone gives you anything pink (well, maybe not ANYTHING…) you have to be happy! It’s a rule that I just made up.

So, with that being said, on this gloomy day, give someone something pink, (a smoothie maybe? a Christmas ornament? a puppy..wait…) go for a run, or sleep 10 hours, and be happy!!!! Life could be so much worse.

…and then life gets in the way.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we didn’t have to work and could just workout whenever we want? One of my biggest struggles is making time to run. By nature, I am a morning runner. I have more energy, I get it over with and just perform better. fact.
Also fact, I leave for work at 6:30. so if I were to get up and run I would have to get up at 4:15 or so…and that would not be fun. I so wish soemtimes I had a job with a lunch break, or a job where I didn’t have to be in until 9, so I could get up at a reasonable hour and run.
But, unfortunately, I am not so lucky. Maybe someday! So, back to my problem. When I run in the afternoons I am lucky to get in 3 miles. I ahve to get home to let the dogs out, I also coach basketball so some nights I can’t make it to the gym at all, etc. etc. So what do you do? I am just SO TIRED by the time I leave work it’s hard to wlak to the car let alone get to the gym. Oh, I also forgot to mention, me going to sleep at 8 so I can get up at 4 is not an option. my husband gets home from work at 8:30 so I would never get to see him, the dogs freak out when he comes home and would wake me up anyway etc. SO WHAT DO I DO?!? thoughts?
What do you do?

Oh, by the way, the whole reason i wrote this is because I went to the gym yesterday and only had time for 2 miles before I had to get back to the school to coach…then i got home late so i went to bed late so I am exhausted today so no run. (not to mention I have 3 errands to run) Why can’t we all just RUN?!? (sometimes I want to run away haha)
sometimes when I am leaving for work and see the women out at 6:30-6:45 running I want to push them down…no just kidding, but I am super jealous!

First run post race

Well, I did what I kinda did kinda didn’t want to do…I ran the whole half marathon, minus a few water stops and when the hubby had to use the bathroom…so now I prooved to myself I can do it, which means next time I am whining about a short 3 mile run..I really can’t because well…I ran 13.1 miles!
I do this to my kids all the time (I teach 5th grade) they will perform poorly on several tests, I will tell them they are not working up to their potential. The, they turn around and make an A. That;s when I catch them. ah HA! I KNEW you could do it. NOW, I expect nothing less than that.
Well, that’s kinda how I feel, except, I did it to myself! All this being said, I am heading to the gym for my first post race run and I am actually a little nervous! It will have to be a short one because I have to go coach a basketball game after, but, I know I will have to run the whole time 🙂

runDisney Half Marathon 2010

So here is my race recap for my very first half marathon! It was QUITE the experience!

We got to Disneyworld Thursday afternoon, checked into the Polynesian and Friday me, my husband bobby and best friend Jen went to the disney expo! I was so excited to buy stuff, and meet the running skirts girls!

we picked up our race packets, shirts, and goodie bags, it was all very smooth. then we shopped!

I pretty much headed straight to the running skirts booth and the twins were SO SWEET! I enjoyed getting to chat with them and hope to see them at the Mardi Gras Rock n roll 1/2!!

we wandered around a bit and bought some more stuff and then headed out

me and Bobby in front of the expo

we ate a HUGE dinner and attempted to go to bed early..but it just didn’t happen. we woke up at 3 AM on RACE MORNING!!!! it was SO COLD. I think it was record breaking temps in Orlando, or close to it. Of course, on the day of the race, OF COURSE!

Since I live in Mississippi, I don’t own a lot, well, any “cold weather running clothes” Luckily, Jen let me borrow a pair of pants to wear under my skirt and a long sleeved wicking shirt to wear as a layer. I also bought a nylon long sleeved shirt from the running skirts girls and then wore a plain black sweatshirt on top to toss in case I got hot. I also wore a hat, gloves, and hot hands!

we got ready, I had some juice with protien powder, and half a cliff bar and we headed to the monorail!
we got to the race, checked our bags, went potty for the first time, and then huddled with about 100 strangers to stay warm. As we were standing there, we realized it was sleeting!!! You have GOT to be kidding me!

We walked about a mile to the corrals in the sleet/freezing rain and visited porta potties for 2nd time and then said goodbye to Jen and her husband, as they are bestial and were in Coral A/B

here is me and Bobby FREEZING!!

we got into our corral which was the 2nd to last one, and waited…and waited…I felt like us slow runners were being punished for being slow b/c we didn’t cross the start till over 30 minutes after teh first runners did!

here is the stage that was at the front

we were off! in the freezing cold! About mile 2 or 3, it started freezing rain. IN case you have never run in freezing rain, it pelts you in the face and feels like hundreds of tiny needles stabbing you. Not the most plesant in the dark at 6 am.
we kept running, and about mile 5 I took a GU. we ran into the Magic Kingdom at this point and I was so excited. This was my absolute FAVORITE part. For a dsiney lover, being able to run down main street with people cheering for you as you head towards the castle was just awesome.

by this time, it started raining, a lot. we just kept on going. at about mine 9, Bobby’s knee started hurting him so we had to slow down some. we only stopped the whole time to get water, and once when Bobby had to use the restroom. I was SO shocked I was able to run the whole way! I believe my hip was so frozen solid I couldn’t feel any pain.

We stopped and got more GU at mile 9 ish, and this is about where we passed my mom and sister who started up about 5 minutes ahead of us.

We kept going, and Bobby kept having to walk and wanted me to go on without him but for our first 1/2 I really wanted to cross the finish with him, so I stopped and jogged slow with him. We kept encouraging each other to keep going, the last 2 miles were tough. It was getting colder, we were soaked, and I couldn’t feel my feet.

We made it into epcot, and only had 1/2 mile to go. Bobby almost couldn’t finish, but I kept encouragining him telling him 3 tenths, 2 tenths, etc. (garmin came in handy) and then we saw the mile 13 sign and the finish line!

I felt the tears well up and I fought back tears as we got to the finish line. we held hands the last stretch and crossed together, arms in the air in triumph. I was so happy, but also so glad it was over. It was so hard! we got our medals and then we were SO COLD becuase our bodies cooled down.
everyone else got food and pics taken adn we left! The mile walk to the monorail was the most miserable mile of my life. I was so cold, shivering uncontrolably. then we had to get OFF the monorail and walk back to the room. we showered and got in bed and slept!
We woke up so sore becuase we were too cold to stretch after the race. I am finally feeling better now!

my time was 2:44 according to garmin, 2:45 according to disney. pretty close I think. I was shooting for 2:30, and if it weren’t for the conditions and having to slow down for Bobby i think I could have done it! I will find out in February for the mardi gras rock n roll half!
here is our picture.

I truly loved this race even though it was so miserable. I HIGHLY reccommend this race, especially if you LOVE Disney like I do! I am toying around the idea of doing the full next year…thoughts?!?

Ow my aching….everything!

Yesterday and today have been pretty painful. Climbing stairs has been the worst. We didnt stretch after the race (shame shame) because it was raining and freezing and we just wanted to get back to the room. Well I am paying for it today! Hips and hip flexors are killing me!

We are driving back to my parents now, then home tomorrow and I will start working on my race recap!

Record setting lows…and sleet!

Oh. My. Gosh.
I ran my first half, the Disney half this morning. What an experience!! Because we are so lucky, we ran on a day of record breaking lows! We also ran in sleet and freezing rain pelting us in the race!!
I will do a full race recap when I get home, but I just wanted to say I did it! I was trying not to cry as I crossed the finish line. The weather made it miserable!!

We ended up running in 2 hours and 45 minutes. Goal was 2:30 but considering the conditions I am not upset.

More to come, but boy do I feel accomplished!!! I DID IT!!
