What Makes you Healthy?

I have been meaning to post about this for awhile, and figured today was a good enough day as any! There has been a lot of talk swirling around about what being healthy really means. Is it a split percentage between eating healthy and exercising? What about mental health, or healthy hygiene habits? I honestly think this is a PERSONAL decision, and not an “across the board” blanket statement you can make about someone.

If someone has emotional issues, then mental health is going to be more important and beneficial to their current well being, because we all know how stress can take years off your life!

If someone else never brushes their teeth or flosses, it is going to be VERY important that they start doing that to be healthy, more so important than an exercise or healthy eating plan.

Then you have someone like me, who would RATHER workout more than eat salads everyday. It is more important to me to be active than more restrictive on my eating. Of course I try to eat healthy, but I also have chocolate everyday and bread and sugar. If I were to take those things out of my life to be more healthy, then my mental health would suffer, which would probably make me depressed and angry, and that isn’t very healthy now is it? Everyone handles things differently, and all decisions have varying effects on people. Of course I think you should try to eat healthy AND have healthy habits AND exercise AND be mentally healthy, but you can’t juggle all of those plates perfectly at the same time without one coming crashing down in my opinion.

The key is BALANCE. And guess what? it’s ok if your balance is different from your sisters, your friends, or the bloggers blog that you read religiously. You were made to be unique, there is no one else like you! Take pride in the fact that you are a one of a kind masterpiece!

You are not healthy because some magazine says you have to do this or that to be so.

You are not healthy just because you run a marathon.

You are not healthy because you do all the “right” things other people expect you to do.

You have to personally define healthy for yourself, and be that. If you try to be someone else’s healthy, you will probably fall short and never be happy with yourself. Is it ok to read articles, get input and help on healthy habits? of course! But be your own person! Take all those little bits of advice and form health for yourself.

I used to think healthy was fitting every health article and piece of advice to a T. It became an impossible chore and made me miserable! I have since found a balance that works for me. There is always room for improvement, but I want to actually live my life, and not look back and realize I wasted all my time trying to reach some impossible perfect goal of health according to someone else’s standards. Advice will always conflict, people will always disagree, and that’s ok!

Look for a follow up post coming soon about my thoughts on being beautiful!

Two Questions of the day today:

What are your thoughts on what health means? What is it to you? Do you strive to be someone else’s standard of healthy or do you have your own?

I am working on pieces for my blog..what are some things you want to see more of, don’t want to see etc? More workout related posts, pictures, food, family life, dogs, Disney, etc? if you don’t want to leave anything in the comments you can e mail me at runningwithsass AT gmail DOT com.

Rainy Wednesday down here in the south! I woke up in the middle of the night to some pretty serious thunder and rain, and the rain is still going strong. Bleh! I have been a busy girl working on vacation quotes this morning, too.

Since I am in the middle of week three of my 6 weeks to 6 pack DVD, I thought it was appropriate to talk about workout boredom. Because I am bored. It’s quite comical….As Jillian talks, I know exactly what she is going to say next and have the whole video memorized! Can anyone relate? yes? I REALLY want this DVD to work and I REALLY want to stick with it but I will admit I am struggling. It has been hard to force myself to do this DVD 5 times a week (I haven’t and won’t) 3-4 is a stretch as it is!

So, I thought I would give some tips that have helped me get through workout boredom NOT related to running.

1.) Think about the results. Focus on WHY you are doing the workout. The results you are trying to achieve, the goal you are trying to reach. Tape up a picture or motivational quote on your mirror, on the wall next to the TV where you do your workouts, etc.

2.) Remember it doesn’t last as long as you think. Most cross or strength training workouts are not going to last over an hour. That’s just 60 minutes. You can do anything for 60 minutes! Just get through it then you will be DONE! In the grand scheme of life an hour is not that long. You can get through it!

3.) Multi task. If your brain goes 100 miles an hour like mine does, you may be better suited to multi task while you workout. If you are on a cardio machine like a bike or elliptical, listen to music, read a magazine, or watch TV. Even if you are at home and don’t have access to a TV or cable in your workout room, do what I used to do. Take a portable DVD player and set it up on or in front of your equipment and watch a movie. You may even want to keep working out so you can keep watching!

4.) Find a friend. Having a friend to chat with in between sets, or just knowing someone is sweating along side of you can be encouraging and make your workout more bearable. Invite a friend over for a yoga DVD at your house then go out for coffee after and catch up. Enlist your spouse to help you clean the house inside and out (works up a sweat for me!) and then you two are working toward a goal together. Makes it more bearable to suffer together!

5.) Count your blessings. Somehow putting things into perspective always help me get out of my boredom and self pity pit. Think of those who are not healthy enough to workout, who would LOVE to have to even have the opportunity to get bored during a workout. Being healthy and strong is a gift, a blessing, so don’t take your opportunity for granted and work hard!

I hope those tips will help you as much as they help me. On that note, I am going to go do my DVD and let Jillian kick my butt again! The sun is even starting to come out! Smile

QOTD: Do you have any good tips to combat workout boredom not related to running?

Being Realistic

Another gloomy day here. Boo! where did my beautiful sunshine-y days go? It’s humid again, but at least it’s still warm. I feel bad for all the people still experiencing winter-like weather! I’m sure spring is REALLY coming soon for you guys!

I have a confession: I ALMOST registered for another half marathon last night. It has really been killing me watching all the northerners gearing up for half marathon season and racing and PRing and having fun while I sit here in the southern heat not running another half until October. That’s HALF A YEAR! Boo! we have daily been having temps surpassing 80 degrees, and I do NOT run well in anything over 65. Throw in humidity percentages in the 90’s and you have a recipe for Heather sweating out a gallon and blacking out.

First, I almost signed up for the Pensacola half that is at the beginning of April. Luckily, we are trying not to spend a ton of money on races so having to get a hotel and pay for gas and two race registrations deterred me from signing us up.

Then there is the Renaissance half marathon at the end of April in the town where we just moved from. I wasn’t going to run it because 1.) it’s April 30, and that means quite warm weather and 2.) it costs 75 dollars a person. YIKES! But then last night I found out ADA from the Biggest Loser is going to be AT THE RACE! I will admit, I came THISCLOSE to signing up for  the race. I battled it out in my mind all evening, until we went for a 3 mile run in the dark and it was STILL hot outside. I realized I do NOT want to be doing long runs of 12-14 miles in the dark and still be dying of a heat stroke. Plus our gym won’t be ready until September so I can’t run inside on a treadmill.

As painful as it as for me, I just can’t do it. I have GOT to be realistic. The 2011 half marathon year for me has been less that stellar so far. One half marathon with a terrible IT band pain which caused a terrible hip pain on the opposite leg led me to a lot of disappointment. All I can do now is run short and fast distances through the summer and come back training for halfs with a vengeance in the fall. (and a hopefully fully healed IT band). It seems so far away right now, but this will be a good lesson in patience for me.

So, REALISTICALLY, I may run another 5k this spring, but that’s it. I will work on speed and strength this summer which will hopefully translate into stronger leg muscles to support my IT band and faster race times!

QOTD: Are you realistic with your race goals? Do you know when it’s time to race/not race, and do you listen to yourself and your body?

****FOR SALE!****

I have not one, but TWO skirts to sell! Both skirts are the same style, print, and size. They are both very gently worn, and show no signs of wear. They are a size 3. BUT, not a true size 3. I normally wear a size 2 in running skirts, but they made the briefs smaller in last year’s spring line so everyone had to upsize to for a more true fit on the rear. Both skirts are for sale for $40 dollars each. They retailed for $58 last spring.

If you are interested or would like more pictures, etc. please e mail me at runningwithsass AT gmail DOT com. I will sell them to the first two people who e-mail me wanting them, so act fast!

The Return of the Smoothie

Another week has begun! Sadly, it’s not a sunny one here. It is gloomy and HUMID. 99% to be exact. YUCK! I want to go run, but I also would like to be able to breathe thank you! I do plan on getting out there this evening with Bobby after he gets home from work, so I will do my 6 pack in 6 weeks video this morning.

This weekend was a good one. Saturday, I told you that I was two months away from vacation! Bobby and I spent the better part of the day unpacking. I have done 90% of the unpacking, but there are just certain things I can’t lift, don’t know where he wants them to go, etc. We were busy last weekend but finally got some time on Saturday. My mom told me we would feel better about unpacking once we could pull a car in the garage, so that was my goal on Saturday.

Originally we wanted to put BOTH cars in the garage, but Bobby decided since our YMCA wouldn’t be open until September, he wanted to set his weight bench up. We also have a golf cart that takes up a lot of room. So, we decided Francis the 4runner was going to have to stay in the driveway, while my 4runner got to sleep in the garage. It took about 5 hours but we did it!

I know it’s not perfect but it will do for now! We did a little weed pulling, and random yard work. Look, we finally got our private residence sign! With our neighborhood being very new, and the fact that they do have model homes you can go in, all the residents have these signs so people don’t just come on in!

We went to our new favorite Mexican restaurant for dinner. I can’t get over these cute pitchers you drink out of!

Yesterday, we went to church and lunch then came home and crashed! Bobby slept for over two hours! We relaxed the rest of the night, just as you should on a Sunday!

Now, onto this morning! I have said before that in the four months I stayed with my parents, I got addicted to coffee thanks to this.

Then when I got my own, I started drinking coffee every morning, which is NOT a habit I wanted to get into. So, now that the weather is getting nice, I decided today to have my first smoothie of the spring! I tried a pre packaged/portioned strawberry banana one made by Jamba juice that I got at Target. All you do is add apple juice (well, and I added protein powder!) it’s been an hour and I am ok…still awake and no headache…yet….we will see how it goes!

I have a deep love of smoothies. Remember these posts?

smoothie 1

smoothie 2

smoothie 3

smoothie 4

As you can see, I love smoothies! But, I hate them in the winter because I hate being cold, so today was the day (with 99% humidity…) that I decided to make my first one of the spring! Hopefully I will be throwing these in a couple of times a week instead of coffee.

QOTD: what is your favorite kind of smoothie?

Two Months From Today…

I Will be on vacation!!!! Woo hoo! I finally get to head out on the Disney Dream. So. excited. See, last summer we cruised our first ever Disney cruise with my parents and had a BLAST. We rebooked onboard for this summer, and at the time it seemed so far away, I can’t believe it is getting so close! This trip is going to be so much better because, well, hello, we will be on the new ship, the DREAM, and, last year my mom was suffering from a shoulder tear AND a frozen shoulder, and my dad who never gets sick had an awful cold. They were pretty pathetic!

We are actually going to Disney world for three nights before the cruise so we can get one more use out of everyone’s annual passes. We are going to share a room in the concierge building of the Polynesian!

The last time we stayed here was for the Disney half marathon over a year ago, and it was SO COLD we didn’t get to enjoy the resort, pool, etc. So we are looking forward to walking the grounds and relaxing this time around!

So, three nights at the Polynesian, then we are driving to the port to get on the MICKEY BOAT! The Disney Dream set sail on it’s Maiden Voyage in January, and we are excited to be on the first double dip (two stops at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay) that the Dream goes on. We LOVE Castaway Cay, and so going twice is right up our alley!

Ah, bliss! Upcoming vacation is what keeps me going, so I am literally counting down the days on my dry erase board on my refrigerator until the trip! we are excited!

Ok, Bobby and I 5 hours unpacking/cleaning out the garage, so I am going to go take a shower and relax! Have a great weekend everyone! Stay tuned, a giveaway is coming up hopefully next week!!!

QOTD: What is your favorite vacation destination?

Meet ‘N Greet

Last night, we went to our neighborhoods Discovery Center (the sales center where they hold events, etc. It will eventually be a library!) for a YMCA meet and greet.

You may remember me talking about our new YMCA from this post.

I got to find out a little more information about what is to come and I am super excited! Sadly, the Y won’t be open until about September, so we all know that means October. Sad smile I was hoping to escape the summer heat, guess that won’t be happening! Anyway, We are getting a YMCA, a market and café, a pool, and an amphitheater  on the lake and a village green to hold things like a farmer’s Market and neighborhood events. FUN! There are more commercial/retail places coming later as well. I am hoping this will bring even more residents into our new little community. I am so stoked about being able to walk to the gym, I have never been able to do anything like that before! Oh, they also are making a boardwalk around the lake that will tie into the existing nature trail (which Bobby and I ran on last night.) Fun! Oh, and the cardio equipment will look out over the lake, and there will be places to sit outside the café on the lake. Good times! I THINK they are putting a dry cleaning drop off and post office in the market as well, but I could be wrong on that.

We got all of the information and can’t wait to join. Since most of the members will be residents, they want our input on the types of classes they will hold, and the kind of equipment that gets put in! I don’t think they realize that this may have been a mistake to tell us heh. Bobby and I are going to make a list. Him focusing on the weights/machines he thinks it should have and I am going to send info on what classes I think would be good and beneficial to the community. They are going to have a slab pouring party and all the residents are going to get to sign on names on the slab. FFFUUNN!

What is also cool is we will be able to also use the other YMCA in the area which is much much bigger and has things like an indoor pool and more classes. The best part is since we are residents, we get an awesome monthly rate. Sign me up!

So does everyone have exciting weekend plans? Ours include unpacking the house some more (there are certain things only Bobby can do or lift!) and hopefully relaxing. We haven’t really had a lazy Saturday since we moved in. Last weekend we had the 5k and I had the bridal shower, so I am looking forward to having nowhere to go!

QOTD: Do you have any exciting weekend plans? Share!

I Will do One Thing Today

It’s Friday eve! I hope you are having a good one. It’s cloudy here, but going to be 80 again. I woke up at 7:00, saw my husband off to work, and then sat down in front of the TV with my coffee. I sat…and I sat…and I sat. You would think I have nothing to do, right? Wrong. I have PLENTY to do.

My house still isn’t unpacked

my desk/work isn’t organized like I want it to be

I haven’t worked out

I have laundry and dishes and dusting to do.

So what’s the deal? I am currently suffering from a case of the lazys. I have been apathetic the past couple of days, and it’s starting to bug me. I think it is a combination of a few things. The newness and excitement of moving is wearing off. I don’t really have any friends here yet. I don’t feel like this town/house/area is “home” yet. So, I am doing what I do best when I get a little sad. Nothing. Sometimes I struggle with getting stuck in my own self pity, and let’s face it, that doesn’t help anyone.

One thing I DO know is how to fix it…if I decide I want to. Sometimes I let my poor attitude get in my own way, and this can lead to me getting deeper and deeper into my “funk.” I really love a good mantra, and have adapted one I haven’t used in awhile to get me through this time and hopefully lift my spirits.

My headmaster at the school I used to teach at gave me this notepad. At the time, I tossed it into a drawer and didn’t think much of it. Funny how a saying means nothing to you when you DON’T need it, but can mean everything when you are grasping for something to get you though.

No, I don’t LITERALLY mean I will do one thing today, ha! To me, this means take it one step at a time. It’s overwhelming to think of all the things I still have to unpack in my house. But, if I look at it as “I am going to unpack one box” the task seems much more manageable and something I can actually do. Then, maybe, once I unpack that first box, I will feel good, and accomplished, and unpack another.

Bottom line: life can get so overwhelming when you think of all your problems, all the things you need to do or accomplish in a day, week, etc. Instead of looking at all of your tasks or problems as a whole, focus on one thing you can accomplish right now. One thing that is going good in your life right now. What blessings can you see? I see a healthy family, a home to live in, people that love me, and the best furry children ever, among many other things.

What is one thing I can do today? I can unpack one box. I can do one load of laundry. I can think of one way I can make new friends. If I am feeling good, maybe I will unpack more, clean more, and it will make my attitude even better.

So when you feel overwhelmed, think of your blessings, think of one thing you can do today, and think of all you have accomplished already. Running races is one of my greatest accomplishments personally. Having run 5 half marathons, a full marathon, 10k, and numerous 5k’s, I can say I am pretty proud of my running accomplishments.

What a great reminder. I hung this up right in front of my desk, so I see it all the time. I believed I could do these things, and I did them!

I am a marathon runner, so I can handle this! I can do one thing today to be a better person, to change my attitude, to be a blessing to someone else today. When life overwhelms you, try and focus in on one thing you can do today. For yourself. For your family for a stranger. Start with just one thing, and then do another. You can do it!

QOTD: What is “one thing” you can do today to get you going so as to not feel overwhelmed by life, but instead feel accomplished?

-Today is my VERY dear friend Jen’s birthday! go check our her blog and wish her a good one!

6 weeks to 6 pack First Glance

Happy Hump day! I hope everyone is having a GREAT day today! It’s already ssooo hot here. High is 80. I just ran a quick 2 miles. I didn’t realize how hot it was and I had on yoga pants and a shirt with sleeves and I was DYING so I only made it 2 of my 3 miles. But then I came home and did my 6 week to 6 pack DVD.

This is my second week of the program and it’s no joke! The way it works is there are two levels (level one and level two obviously…) and you are supposed to do level one for three weeks, five times a week. She goes through one circuit two times during the workout. This is how it has broken down for me so far…

The first week I did level one 3 or 4 times I can’t remember, but I only went through the circuit once, to get used to it (incredibly sore abs after the first day forced my fate upon me). Then this week I have done it twice, going through the whole circuit. Doing this video five times a week is unrealistic for me for two reasons

1.) I like to run and do other workouts and not just the video

2.) I get bored easy.

That’s my honest answer! I realize I may not get the results promised, but a little toning before my cruise around the midsection is all I am after.

I have gotten a couple of questions regarding what I wear to do a workout like this. My running skirt? Haha! No, I haven’t done that…yet..I typically wear yoga type capri/knee pants and a tight fitting shirt. No, not because I want Jillian to think I am an awesome serious workout guru, but because I HATE when I am doing planks, etc. and my t-shirt flies up over my head and smothers me. Ok…so maybe I am being a little dramatic, but it’s annoying! So I typically wear something like this. Pleas ignore the messy bathroom, we just moved in, remember? I’m working on it!!!

My HOPE for this video is that there is enough difference in my mid section to justify posting before and after photos. Yes, I took the photos, no I am not showing you yet. Patience my friends. I need to see results!

Something else fun to tell you about, I got to have a blogger meet up yesterday! The lovely Cate from My Running Ambition was passing through my way on her way back to my old stomping grounds of NOLA where so recently moved. I was so excited she contacted me and quickly agreed to a Starbucks meet up!

It was so great to meet her, and we obviously have a lot in common! We talked about New Orleans, and I gave her a few pointers on the city and on having a significant other in law school! It felt like we were old friends and I hope I get to see her again soon! She was also nice enough to let me take her picture for the blog, of course! Say hi Cate! Isn’t she precious?

Ok I am going to do a little strength training, I have been neglecting it since we moved in. I wish they would hurry up and finish building the YMCA! I have a feeling it’s going to be a HOT summer!

QOTD: Do you like workout DVD’s? Which ones?

Tea Party

Happy Tuesday!

I thought I would share something kind of fun with you today. My second cousin is a year younger than me (my moms siblings are over 10 years older than her) and he is getting married! So my first cousin, his mom, helped host a Bridal tea party at her house (same house we go to at Christmastime) for the bride. It was so cute and fun, I just had to share with yall! She went all out and everything looked great!

Good times were had by all. I don’t know what possessed me to wear high heels two hours after running a hard/hot 5k, but I was cursing myself for it at the shower!

Oh, so I guess you are wanting to know who won the giveaway, right? Smile

It’s Angie from Kansas Runner! Angie, Please e-mail me at runningwithsass At gmail DOT com, and I will get you in touch with Stacy at Punkeelove headbands so you can pick out your prize!

ST. Patrick’s Day 5k 2011

Happy Monday! Catching up from the weekend? Here is what you missed!

Fit Magazine Article and Photos

Fitness Role Model

I ran a 5k Saturday and went to my cousins bridal shower (I will post those pictures tomorrow!) Yesterday we tried out a new church, went for a walk, did some unpacking and relaxing!

On to the 5k recap!

DSC_2172 DSC_2171

We were excited to run this race because it was our first race in our new town! It was a block off the beach, right by the Beau Rivage and Hard Rock.

2011-03-19091158 2011-03-19091219

When we pulled up we saw there was some kind of festival or something going on, we decided to check it out after the race.

The race didn’t start until 9:30 which I knew was bad news because it was already 70 degrees when we got there at 9:00, and it was super sunny. I didn’t tell anyone because I wanted to see how I did….but I did a timed 5k at my house a few days ago and ran it in 28:02. So, I figured on a flat course (my neighborhood has a couple of hills) with adrenaline and people to race against, I could run a 27:00, or maybe even less. I was a little apprehensive because of the heat, but I figured I would PR regardless of the heat because I haven’t run a road 5k since last spring. It was a pretty big local race, about 300 people. I didn’t take my camera with me, so I don’t have any during the race pictures.

One great thing about this race was since it was a block off the beach it was totally flat which was really nice! But, there was NO SHADE! We started at 9:35 and 73 degrees. I started off well and ran the first mile in 8:42. I was aware of the heat but it wasn’t really getting to me yet. We hit around 1.3 and they had a water stop. I decided not to stop, knowing it was an out and back course, and decided I would stop for water on the way back. This is about where I started to get hot. I was even wearing a white hat, but my ears and head got so hot and I started getting lightheaded. About this time, the leaders started passing me going back the other way. WOW they were booking it, and there was a girl right up there with them! Bobby passed me and I realized I was only about a minute behind him, awesome! I made the turn and was pouring sweat, cursing myself for not wearing a tank top. Since it was a St. Patrick’s day race Bobby and I wore the only green running shirts we have, the Mardi Gras Rock n Roll half shirts from this year. It was funny because we saw about 30 people wearing them!

Anyway, I hit the water stop on the way back, and stopped to walk while I drank. I took a couple sips then poured the rest over my head. I immediately got nauseated and so wished I could throw up. I tried, no dice. I started running again, hit mile 2, and was still feeling so overheated. My pace started to slow but there wasn’t anything I could do. There were two guys I kept going back and forth with the whole race, I guess we were all trying to hold under a 9:00 pace. When they would stop and walk I would tell them to keep running as I passed them. In a way I think I was really trying to tell MYSELF to keep going because I wanted to stop so badly! I did stop one more time at about mile 2.7, and tried to throw up again. I was cursing the sun and the south and the humidity at this point! I knew I was close so I pushed some more and finally made it to the finish line! Garmin said I ran a 29:27. I was happy I PRed, but disappointed it wasn’t the time I wanted. People were talking about how cold it was when they ran this race last year…HA I wish! Bobby’s PR is a low 23:00, and he ran a 25:49, so about 2:30 or so off his PR. So I think under better weather I really could have gotten my 27. What a bummer. Oh well, it is what it is, and I am still happy I got a PR.

2011-03-19100818 2011-03-19101336

they had bleachers by the finish line. This was after the race so there is no one there anymore ha.

After we cooled off in the shade we walked to that festival to see what was going on. We found out it was a BBQ cookoff, how fun!

We went down by the beach to take a couple of pictures for fun.

DSC_2175 DSC_2176

DSC_2178 DSC_2179

DSC_2182 DSC_2185

We took a self portrait

then a lady who was sunbathing on the beach came up and offered to take our picture, and said “I know how hard it is when you are traveling alone to get pictures.” We just smiled…

Then we thanked her and she said “enjoy the rest of your vacation!” We just said thank you and didn’t correct her and tell her that I am just a crazy blogger who takes pictures of everything and we live 15 minutes up the road. HA!

We drove along the beach and Bobby realized we were passing by where his family kept their boat when he was a kid. He explained to me how it “used to look”.” He had not been back since hurricane Katrina, and apparently she took the whole marina out. These big poles are where the President casino used to sit. After the hurricane it ended up on the other side of the beach road on top of a hotel (which is no longer there)

He showed me where their boat slip was, where he used to play, etc. It’s all just slabs and piles of rubble now. So sad!

We kept driving until we hit our road then headed north home!

That’s it! So, fun race in new town, nice and flat, PR, but super hot and bummed about my time. I guess my “unofficial” PR can still be the 28:02 I ran at home, right?

QOTD: Have you ever run a really hot/humid race? How did it affect your performance?
