Weekly recap and Giveaway Winner

Good morning! Yesterday was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Not a cloud in the sky, low 70’s. It was perfect. Well, perfect for walking, laying out, etc. NOT perfect for running. it was a bit too warm on our six miles and I got a little overheated. After we ran, we lifted weights at the YMCA then did some yard work. (Cutting back bushes, cutting grass, raking leaves.) We also took the dogs for a walk and sat outside in the sun with them. Quite the productive morning!

QOTD: What is the “perfect” running temperature to you?

Passionate

You can tell when you are reading an article or blog written by a person passionate about their subject matter. The joy and excitement overflow onto the page, and is woven into each sentence or idea. Having a desire to share, motivate, and inspire is evident in their work, making each new story exciting to read.  It’s not just about writing, but about the fire that burns within the author, desiring to get their point across to help inform and share with others. Running With Sass is my baby, and I deeply enjoy sharing stories, tips, and motivation with my readers everyday. To be able to do so on an even larger scale would be a dream come true.

True, I am just an average girl, but that is part of my draw. I attract a lot of readers that are new runners, bloggers, and those just starting out on their fitness journey. I have received countless e-mails from readers thanking me for being real and honest, and for showing them that anyone can be fit and healthy.  They enjoy my message of not having to be the fastest, the strongest, or the best…but just striving to be the greatest version of themselves.

Growing up, I played multiple sports, and even moved on to coaching after college. I have coached basketball at the middle school level, and volleyball at the high school varsity (6A) level. I am very knowledgeable of both sports, and fitness in general. Running is my most recent passion of three years, and I recently have added weight lifting and yoga to my always growing fitness practices.

My job allows me to travel to several races throughout the year, so I believe having a fresh perspective on the health and fitness of different cities would be a great benefit to readers. Not only have I learned a lot working at health and fitness expos, but also in partnering with several companies to review and share their products.

Other passions of mine include putting a stop to childhood obesity, and furthering cancer research. I shared my thoughts and experience in a vlog last month on the matter of childhood obesity. As a former teacher, it broke my heart to see so many children struggle with their weight and be bullied by other students.

Don’t forget about my 6 second “fail” that went along with the above vlog. Oops! At least I can laugh at myself, right? (I’m saying “fail” at the end of the video).

I also love social media, and spend a lot of time each day interacting on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, as well as several forums, message boards and other blogs. I have a large twitter following, and a fan page for my blog on Facebook as well as a personal Facebook page. Participating in Twitter chats and social media conversations is something I really enjoy. Meeting new people, reaching out and making friends is an encouragement and inspiration.

My mother is a stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. She is an amazing woman with a lot of fight, and a great inspiration to many. I have learned so much watching her, and as a family we have all taken steps towards a more healthy lifestyle to help prevent certain types of cancer. My husband and I ran a half marathon this fall with Team in Training benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. It was a great experience and I was thrilled to be a part of raising money for cancer research and treatment.

In closing, I think the name of my blog says it all. Yes I run, and yes I try to live an active, healthy life…but I do it all with a touch of sass. Who says healthy living and fitness have to be boring and bland? Spicing up your fitness and health as well as your life in general, can help you to be a success story. I have faced obstacles, criticism, injuries, mental defeats, and trials. Through it all, my husband and I are dedicated to a healthy and fit lifestyle, against all odds.

Below is a video I put together last summer documenting my healthy living journey. I hope you enjoy following along.

QOTD: What are you passionate about?

Ultra Immune Giveaway

A few weeks ago, I was contacted by the folks at Ultra Immune about doing a review and giveaway of there product. I was intrigued as I have been seeing ads for it all over the place. Plus, with the weather here going from hot to cold, I usually get pretty sick this time of year. Very willing to try an herbal supplement to boost my immune system, I was on board! Not to mention…a RWS reader will win a two month supply for themselves! ($72 value!)

2012-01-06170942

First, what is Ultra Immune?

Ultra Immune is an herbal supplement designed to support the natural function of your immune system…..

“Ultra Immune combines the best in Eastern and Western philosophies, crosses centuries of practical use and focuses exclusively on well-researched and regarded herbal and botanical extracts.

In addition to combining ten select ingredients, we also work hard to ensure that the original sources and suppliers of those ingredients follow best practices (including sustainability) and deliver the highest quality possible.”

2012-01-06170951

The basics:

  • Strengthen Immune System.
  • Safe for Continuous Use.
  • 100% All Natural. Vegan.
  • 10 Compelling Ingredients.
  • Gluten & Preservative Free
  • Minty flavor

My personal review:

In the mornings before I eat anything, I put a dropper full under my tongue. The flavor is fine, and it’s easy to take. We will see how I do over an extended period, but so far, no sickness and I feel great! A lot of supplements are not safe to take for extended periods of time, but I like that this one is. As an athlete, a strong immune system is very important to me, especially this time of year. I think a product such as this is great for anyone busy and on the go, and I am happy with the results so far.

From the Bottom to the Top

Goooodddd morning friends! Being able to work out the past few days (upper body and bike only) has REALLY put me in a better mood. Those that say they don’t workout because they don’t want to have their energy zapped…PEOPLE, it’s the exact opposite. You will have so much more energy, it’s awesome. Anyway, I was doing some research last night and found an article talking about the ten healthiest cities for women. I knew that mine would not be on there, but I did want to share them with you:

1. Greenest: Des Moines, IA

2. Healthiest overall: Cambridge, Mass.

3. Healthiest eaters: Santa Barbara, Calif.

4. Safest: San Jose, Calif.

5. Happiest: Raleigh, N.C.

6. Longest lives: Honolulu, Hawaii

7. Most active: Denver, Colo.

8. Healthiest love lives: Seattle, Wash.

9. Best breasts: Bethesda, Md. Get your mine out of the gutter! This is in terms of health/mammograms, etc.

10. Best skin: Miami, Fla.

If you agree, disagree, live in one of these areas, I would love your input. This brings me to my next point…sadly, not only is my city on here, but my state, Mississippi, is regularly the most overweight in the country. Check out this article  about one woman who is trying to change that. I wish there were more people like that! I would LOVE to be a part of a movement to get the gulf coast more healthy. I have no idea how to even START. If anyone has any experience or ideas, throw them my way! Unfortunately money doesn’t grow on trees down here on the coast, so it would have to be something with little to no overhead. Any ideas or suggestions? Help a sister out so we can get Mississippi off the bottom of that list and into the top ten!

——————————–

In other totally random news, I FINALLY, I’m talking seven months overdo got a haircut yesterday. I got bangs and some layers and I really like how it came out!

2011-12-13155147

Luckily I have a ton of headbands because I think the bangs are going to drive me ca-RAY-zy. But it’s so nice to have a nice little change right before the holidays and new year. I am keeping up with my upper body weights and riding the stationary bike. hopefully only 6 days to go!

QOTD: Any ideas for helping my community get on the right track with health and fitness?

Childhood Obesity Vlog

Good morning! I am actually away/busy this weekend, but here is something fun I filmed for you yesterday before the craziness started. I decided due to some coaxing from some blends to do some more vlogs. I have some great ideas for some fun and action packed ones for when I am out of the boot, but for now you just have to listen to me talk. Smile

Today’s vlog is about something near and dear to my heart, the childhood (and college student) obesity epidemic. Hear what I have to say on the matter, and I would LOVE your feedback! I will “recap” below the post in case you don’t have speakers/don’t want to wake your entire family up by listening to my dog growl at me in my video. Enjoy!

Oh boy. Yes, my dog DOES growl to be held, like a child. Well, kids don’t growl…I hope. Anyway, as a recap:

-Obesity in children and young adults is worse than ever

-College students need better education on healthy habits and eating/exercise coming into an already overwhelming Freshman year.

-kids need to step away from the screen and go PLAY outside.

-PARENTS need to take responsibility for instilling healthy habits, and with the help of schools and the community, we need to come up with more ways to fix this problem.

QOTD: My questions for you:

1.) What can we do as a parent/teacher/member of a community do to fix this

2.) What do you already do/implement as a parent/teacher/community member to teach children and young adults healthy habits? I would love to start some discussion!

*Bloggers! If you are running Disney Princess and want to take part in a meet up please vote on the poll on my right sidebar!

*readers and bloggers, if you would like me to share a picture of your Christmas tree and or outdoor lights e mail me a picture at [email protected] and your blog link (if you have one) and I will post them all as a virtual Christmas tour as we get closer to Christmas

…aaannnddd for your enjoyment, I present you this six second little gem. By the way, the last word I am saying (which sadly got cut off) is “fail!”

Fitfluential Ambassador

Hiya! I am so excited to share with you why I think I should be considered for Fitfluentials ambassador program for 2011! When I first heard about this my mind started racing, thinking of all the things I wanted to share about my passion for fitness, health, and representing the SOUTH! (Which just happens to be the best place to live, in case you didn’t know…) First things first….

I currently live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, about an hour or so from New Orleans. I grew up in Louisiana outside of New Orleans, and my family still lives there, so I am in town all the time. I love the south and hope I never have to leave it. We have the most hospitable people here (as well as the most humid summers, which I could do without….and the hurricanes….but you have to take the bad with the good, right?)

I currently work from home as a blogger which I LOVE doing. It allows me to be home with my puppy dogs, and gives me the flexibility to workout pretty much whenever I want, and, AND, flexibility to be your ambassador! This is where my butt is parked for a good portion of the day:

DSC_2447

note the sweet puppy who loves having mommy at home!

As I said before, we live on the Mississippi gulf coast, just a quick 15 minute drive to the beach!

DSC_2186

But I also love being close to New Orleans. There are a lot of great races there.

DSC_0712 DSC_0719

Of course, my family is there, too.

fam2

We also got married in New Orleans, and had a Jazz band at our wedding, and of course danced in the traditional New Orleans second line dance!

wedding10 wedding11

wedding28 wedding22

So we run around the neighborhood, and play volleyball and throw the Frisbee in the park that is right in our front yard! Having a park in our front yard is what ultimately drew us to building on this particular lot.

DSC_2669DSC_2682DSC_2689

Yes that is our house in the background!

We also have enjoyed running at the beach. People watching makes running more fun!

2011-04-30_11.49.40 DSC_2467

It’s no secret I love to run and race even though it gets to a million degrees here in the summer which makes running more…difficult.

230403_570152787698_61700476_31939537_7563477_n 2011-04-181233452011-04-25104220

If Fitfluential were to have an event around here, there would be so many options of places to go, things to see, I just can’t name them all!

On the gulf coast, there are condos on the beach to stay in, and plenty of casinos with banquet halls and conference rooms. There are also concert halls at the casinos, great bands, singers, and comedians come here all the time! (Trust me, they are on EVERY billboard!)

In New Orleans, what can I say? Pick any beautiful French quarter hotel and there is space for events! SO much to sightsee and do, places to eat, history to learn about. Not to mention New Orleans is extremely walkable, which is a nice touch for a gathering of people. The music and food is not to be missed! (Did you not see the picture of me with the beignets from Café du Monde earlier?!) If you don’t know what a beignet is, don’t worry about it. It’s ok. I will try not to be insulted.

So why do I even care about all of this? Because I LOVE helping people. I love to inspire, to teach, to coach. (Hence why I used to be a teacher and a coach!) I love helping people get started with a running program. I love getting e-mails form people asking how to get started, telling me I am an inspiration. I was honored in February to be named the New Orleans Times Picayune Fit magazine role model. The tag line they use is “if she can do it, so can you!” and I honestly BELIEVE that. Never did I think I would run marathons, blog everyday, or be an inspiration to ANYONE! I was so honored to be on the cover of the magazine and have an article inside.

I really don’t get nervous public speaking, I am so passionate about sharing the knowledge I have that it just overtakes any fear. It is a true joy to see others succeed, and know that you were a small part of it. The awesome readers I have is what keeps me blogging. the support and encouragement I have received makes me just want to pay it forward to anyone who will listen!

Check out this video I made of why I should be a FitFluential Ambassador!

and check out this slideshow I made! I’m pretty proud of it.
